Sound Fuzion

The Green Room

Sound Fuzion is a sixteen-piece commercial band that was formed and founded at the University of Memphis. Founded in 1988, the vision/ goal for the premiere commercial ensemble is to prepare students for the professional world of touring and performing. Over the years, Sound Fuzion has helped enhance and cultivate artists including Jordan Occasionally, Kyndle Wylde, The PRVLG, Jessica Ray, and The Band Camino. With high enrollment and determined students, Sound Fuzion equips and develops students to prepare them for the music industry and the world.

The Project H

In 2014, The Project H won the Pitch Music Award for “Best Jazz Ensemble.” Their record, We Live Among the Lines was named the second-best Kansas City release of any genre by The Deli magazine in 2014. Their fourth record of original music, Everyday, Forever, reached #7 on iTunes in March of 2018.

Making Movies

Charu Suri

Gritty City Bang Bang

Gritty City Bang Bang is the brainchild of guitarist Jonathan Bass. Original compositions by Bass are elevated by Memphis titans Mike Assad and Carl Caspersen. This trio delivers improvisation permeated with cinematic Americana vibes, bringing the funk when needed. While James Otis Sexton is widely known as a versatile drummer, having performed, toured, or recorded with several world renowned and Grammy-winning artists, he is least known as a composer. For this reason, “The Otis Mission” was created, and it will solely perform James’ original musical compositions.

(SOLD OUT!) SONGBIRDS: A Tribute to Women in Jazz

The Green Room

To celebrate Women’s History Month, the jazz department at the Stax Music Academy will present a tribute to the pioneers and powerhouses that have blazed trails for women worldwide in jazz. The concert will feature SMA’s jazz vocal ensemble, Kind Of Blue, named after the iconic 1959 Miles Davis album. The vocalists will be accompanied by a band of instrumentalists from the SMA Jazz Department. This tribute includes nods to the music of Ella Fitzgerald, Nancy Wilson, Nina Simone, and even contemporary artists like Esperanza Spalding and Jamila Woods.
