Folk All Y’all: Jessye DeSilva

The Green Room

Jessye DeSilva’s new, crowdfunded album, Renovations, chronicles an ongoing, imperfect journey to self-love and -acceptance, full of both moments of resignation and moments of triumph.

Marisa Anderson

The Green Room

Her deeply original work applies elements of minimalism, electronic music, drone and 20th century classical music to compositions based on blues, jazz, gospel and country music, re-imagining the landscape of American music. The New Yorker calls Anderson ‘one of the most distinctive guitar players of her generation’, while NPR refers to her as among ‘this era’s most powerful players’.

The Crosstown Arts Film Series presents A BRIGHTER SUMMER DAY

Crosstown Theater

Among the most praised titles in all contemporary film, this singular masterpiece of Taiwanese cinema, directed by Edward Yang, is set in the early sixties in Taiwan. A Brighter Summer Day is based on the true story of a crime that rocked the nation. A film of both sprawling scope and tender intimacy, this novelistic, patiently observed epic centers on the gradual, inexorable fall of a young teenager (Chen Chang, in his first role) from innocence to juvenile delinquency, and is set against a simmering backdrop of restless youth, rock and roll, and political turmoil.

The Crosstown Arts Film Series presents BEFORE SUNRISE

An exquisitely understated ode to the thrill of romantic possibility, the inaugural installment of The Before Trilogy opens with a chance encounter between two solitary young strangers. After they hit it off on a train bound for Vienna, the Paris university student Celine and the scrappy American tourist Jesse impulsively decide to spend a day together before he returns to the U.S. the next morning.
