SUMMARY:Modern Masters: The Ben Markley & Michael Shults Quintet
DESCRIPTION:Modern Masters: Ben Markley and Michael Shults Quintet\nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts \nWednesday\, April 9\, 2026 \nDoors open at 7:00 PM | Show begins at 7:30 PM \n$20 in advance (plus fees) | $25 at the door \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nThe Ben Markley & Michael Shults Quintet brings together five exceptional musicians in a collaborative modern jazz ensemble that balances deep tradition with forward-thinking creativity. Pianist\, composer\, and bandleader Ben Markley joins forces with acclaimed saxophonist Michael Shults to present music that is both intellectually rich and viscerally engaging. \nBEN MARKLEY: \nBen Markley is a pianist\, composer\, arranger\, author\, educator\, and leader of the Ben Markley Big Band\, a daring ensemble known for their creative takes on beloved modern and contemporary jazz classics. Fresh off the heels of Clockwise: The Music of Cedar Walton\, Markley tackles his most ambitious project yet: Ari’s Funhouse\, a big band album featuring the music of drummer Ari Hoenig\, with Hoenig himself in the drum chair. The album received great critical acclaim and was selected as one of the best 4 star rated albums of 2022 by DownBeat magazine. \nMarkley is active as a composer and arranger with many big band and vocal jazz charts published through UNC Jazz Press as well as his own website. Recent arranging commissions include the Kansas City Jazz Orchestra\, Jazz Orchestra of Philadelphia\, and Wyoming Jazz Educators All-State Jazz Band. \nIn 2023 Markley published Cedar. The Life and Music of Cedar Walton (University of North Texas Press). Markley conducted more than seventy-five interviews with friends and family members\, musicians who played with or were otherwise influenced by Walton\, and industry figures such as club owners. Musicians interviewed include such stars as Jimmy Heath\, Benny Golson\, and Ron Carter. Walton’s wife Martha shared her extensive archives of photos\, ephemera such as fliers and tour itineraries\, and letters to inform Markley’s writing which is the definite biography on Walton. \nMarkley’s book A Practical Approach to Improvisation – The David Hazeltine Method was published by Jamey Aebersold Jazz in December of 2014. It documents David Hazeltine’s process of creating etudes from transcriptions. \nMarkley is an active performer in the Denver-metropolitan area and along the front range. He currently teaches jazz piano and serves as department chair of the music department for the University of Wyoming. \nMICHAEL SHULTS: \nSaxophonist Michael Shults has been praised for his “strong\, imaginative” improvisations (Downbeat Magazine) and “fresh and intelligent musical ideas” (The Pitch). A first-call musician on the Kansas City jazz scene for nearly a decade\, Shults remains an active performer in the Fountain City\, Memphis\, and beyond\, and has twice appeared as a sideman on the Jazzweek National Radio Airplay Charts. As a graduate student at the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music\, Michael was a finalist in the 2012 North American Saxophone Alliance Jazz Artist Competition\, and was the winner of the Graduate College Soloist category in the 2012 Downbeat Magazine Student Music Awards Issue. He has since performed by invitation as a featured soloist at the North American Saxophone Alliance biennial conference\, the Jazz Education Network conference\, the Midwest Clinic\, the Wisconsin Music Educator’s Association conference\, the Minnesota Music Educator’s Association conference\, and the Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival. Michael has shared the stage professionally with many of the most significant jazz artists of our time\, including Bobby Watson\, Sean Jones\, Nat Reeves\, Pat Bianchi\, Lynn Seaton\, Curtis Lundy\, John Hebert\, and Bob McChesney. He is the Musical Director of the Memphis Jazz Orchestra\, which has held a weekly residency on historic Beale Street for over three decades. \nDr. Shults is Associate Professor of Saxophone at the University of Memphis\, and previously held the position of Assistant Professor of Saxophone for four years at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. He is a Yamaha Artist and a Vandoren Artist-Clinician and performs on their instruments and reeds exclusively.

SUMMARY:Crosstown Arts Film Series: Under the Silver Lake
DESCRIPTION:David Robert Mitchell’s Under the Silver Lake is a woozy neo-noir that sinks into the dream logic of Los Angeles\, peeling back its sunlit surface to expose the network of symbols\, conspiracies\, and secret messages that seem to pulse beneath the city. At the center is Sam\, a drifting young man whose obsession with hidden meaning escalates after a mysterious woman vanishes from the apartment complex where he lives. \nOn its face\, the film plays like a contemporary detective story\, complete with codes\, clues\, and shadowy figures moving through Hollywood’s forgotten edges. Beneath that structure\, however\, is a meditation on loneliness\, fixation\, and the way pop culture imprints on the psyche. Sam’s journey is less about solving a mystery and more about clinging to a narrative that gives his life form\, direction\, and a sense of cosmic importance. \nThe undertones of Under the Silver Lake swirl with cultural decay and generational drift. The film is haunted by the ghosts of classic cinema and old Hollywood glamour\, but the glitter has curdled into an atmosphere of disillusionment. The soundtrack\, the billboards\, the movie posters\, the disposable media\, all function as hieroglyphs in a culture obsessed with being noticed yet terrified of fading away. \nMitchell’s film balances humor with dread\, and beauty with absurdity. It invites the viewer into a conspiracy that may be real or may be merely a projection of Sam’s desperation to feel connected to something larger than himself. In the end\, Under the Silver Lake becomes a strange\, melancholic portrait of a city where everyone is waiting to be discovered\, and where being lost can feel like a secret code all its own.

SUMMARY:Folk All Y’all: Rebecca Loebe
DESCRIPTION:Folk All Y’all: Rebecca Loebe \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts \nThursday\, April 9th\, 2026 \nDoors open at 7 PM | Show begins at 7:30 PM \nTickets: $20 \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nOver the past decade\,Austin-based troubadour Rebecca Loebe(she/her) has  been steadily building her audience the old fashioned way: driving hundreds of thousands of miles in an old station wagon\, performing in listening rooms and theaters across the US\,Canada\, Japan\, Europe\, and the UK. \nIn 2019\, she released her fifth studio album\, her first collaboration with the Grammy-nominated Houston-based record label Blue Corn Music. The genre-bending album borrows equally from the worlds of intimate folk\, ear wormy pop\, and no-holds-barred Americana. Refusing to pledge allegiance to any single genre was a creative gamble that has paid off in a big way: Give Up Your Ghosts has received the best press of Loebe’s career\, including praise from Billboard\, Rolling Stone\, and legendary rock critic Dave Marsh\, who said: “Once I put it on I couldn’t take it off.” \nRecently\, Rebecca has spent her time recently writing\, recording\, performing online\, and launching a Youtube series about what really goes on behind the scenes in the lives and careers of independent musicians. She also got a dog\, so if you hate puppy pictures\, make sure not to look at her social media. Her 2026 tour celebrates her much-anticipated new release\, so be there to catch it live!

SUMMARY:Memphis Jazz Orchestra featuring Michael Dease
DESCRIPTION:Memphis Jazz Orchestra featuring Michael Dease\nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nSaturday\, April 25th\, 2026\nDoors open at 7:00 PM | Show starts at 7:30 PM\n$25 in advance | $30 at the door\nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE\nJoin the Memphis Jazz Orchestra for a special one-night only performance at the Green Room at Crosstown Arts featuring one of the preeminent trombonists of the current era\, Michael Dease! \nMichael Dease is one of the world’s eminent trombonists\, lending his versatile sound and signature improvisations to over 200 recordings and groups as diverse as Grammy-winning artists David Sanborn\, Christian McBride\, Kanye West\, Michel Camilo\, and Alicia Keys. Born in Augusta\, Georgia\, he played the saxophone and trumpet before choosing the trombone at age 17. In 2001\, Dease moved to New York City to become part of the historic first class of jazz students at The Juilliard School\, earning both Bachelors and Masters degrees\, and quickly established a reputation as a brilliant soloist\, side-person\, and bandleader. \nGive It All You Got (Posi-Tone\, 2021) received positive acclaim from JazzTimes Magazine and a coveted 4-star review from Downbeat Magazine. The music centers on themes of devotion to the past and future of the jazz lineage\, realized at the Jazz Institute at Brevard where he serves as director. As a bandleader\, this is Dease’s eighth album for Posi-Tone\, fourteenth of his career\, and features Gregory Tardy\, Ulysses Owens\, as well as his wife Gwen Dease and eldest daughter Brooklyn Dease on percussion. Since then\, he has released Best Next Thing (Posi-Tone\, 2022)\, his baritone saxophone recording debut on Swing Low (Posi-Tone\, 2023)\, two albums featuring music from composer Gregg Hill\, The Other Shoe (Origin\, 2023) and Found in Space (Origin\, 2024)\, plus Groves Groove (Le Coq Records\, 2024)\, and City Life (Origin\, 2025). \nDownbeat Magazine named Dease the 2016 Rising Star Jazz Trombonist. He then won the magazine’s Critics Poll for 2021 Trombonist of the Year\, an award granted in subsequent years as well. He is a three-time Grammy award winner with Christian McBride and Alicia Keys and a sought-after lead\, section\, and bass trombonist with today’s leading jazz orchestras. His experiences include bands led by Christian McBride\, Roy Hargrove\, Nicholas Payton\, Charles Tolliver\, Rufus Reid\, Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra\, and the Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Big Band. However\, it is on the frontline of small groups led by master musicians like The Heath Brothers\, Winard Harper\, Renee Rosnes\, Bill Charlap\, Claudio Roditi\, and Lewis Nash\, where Dease has revitalized the trombone’s image. Not content to simply improvise\, Dease arranges and composes for many different bands\, constantly adjusting his tone and timbre to add just the right flavor to the music. \nMichael Dease is an enthusiastic endorser and Performing Artist for Yamaha Trombones\, Trumpets and Saxophones\, Pickett-Blackburn brass mouthpieces\, and the custom repair services of expert craftsman Scott Sweeney of Sweeney Brass in Raleigh\, North Carolina. Most importantly\, he enjoys spending time with his extraordinary wife and Professor of Percussion at MSU\, Gwendolyn Dease\, and their daughters Brooklyn and Charly.

SUMMARY:The Mystic
DESCRIPTION:So\, what is The Mystic? The Mystic is a catalyst; through music\, story\, silence and dialogue\, we hope to strengthen our attachment to hopes and dreams. In the mystic\, diversity is a prerequisite for all creativity\, which is why Crosstown Concourse is the perfect home. In The Mystic\, the world is far-better served by different beliefs than it could ever be if limited by rigid uniformity. \nAnd if this doesn’t rock your gypsy soul\, the goal of The Mystic is to not feel better but get better at feeling.
