SUMMARY:PRIZM Ensemble: Imani Winds
DESCRIPTION:PRIZM Ensemble presents Imani Winds in collaboration with Crosstown Arts  in Crosstown Theater. \nCrosstown Theater at Crosstown Arts\nMonday\, June 3\, 2024\nTime: 7 pm\nTickets: $33 in advance | $40 at the door \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nCelebrating over a quarter century of music making\, the twice GRAMMY® Award-nominated Imani Winds has led both a revolution and evolution of the wind quintet through their dynamic playing\, adventurous programming\, imaginative collaborations\, and outreach endeavors that have inspired audiences of all ages and backgrounds. \nThe ensemble’s playlist embraces traditional chamber music repertoire and newly commissioned works from voices that reflect historical events and the times in which we currently live. Twenty-six seasons of full-time touring has brought Imani Winds to virtually every major chamber music series\, performing arts center\, and summer festival in the U.S. They regularly perform in prominent venues including Carnegie Hall\, Lincoln Center\, and the Kennedy Center and have a presence at festivals such as Chamber Music Northwest\, Chautauqua Institution and Banff Centre. \nAppointed in 2021 as Curtis Institute of Music’s first ever Faculty Wind Quintet\, Imani Winds commitment to education runs deep. The highly successful Imani Winds Chamber Music Festival launched in 2010\, is an annual summer program devoted to musical excellence and career development for pre-professional instrumentalists and composers. The curriculum includes mentorship\, masterclasses\, entrepreneurial workshops\, community engagement activities and performances\, with the goal of fostering the complete musician and global citizen. In 2019\, the group extended their mission even further by creating the non-profit organization\, Imani Winds Foundation\, which exists to support\, connect and uplift their initiatives and more. \nImani Winds’ travels through the jazz world are highlighted by their multi-faceted association with luminary musicians and composers Wayne Shorter\, Paquito D’Rivera and Jason Moran. Their ambitious project\, “Josephine Baker: A Life of Le Jazz Hot!” featured jazz songstress René Marie in performances that brought the house down in New York\, Pittsburgh\, San Francisco\, Los Angeles and St. Louis. \nIn 2021\, Imani Winds released their 9th studio album\, “Bruits” on Bright Shiny Things Records\, which received a 2022 GRAMMY® nomination for “Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance.” Gramophone states\, “the ensemble’s hot rapport churns with conviction throughout.” \nImani Winds has recordings on Koch International Classics and E1 Music\, including their 2006 GRAMMY® nominated recording\, “The Classical Underground”. They have also recorded for Naxos and Blue Note and released an acclaimed arrangement of Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring on Warner Classics. They are regularly heard on all media platforms including NPR\, American Public Media\, the BBC\, SiriusXM\, the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal.

SUMMARY:Folk All Y’all: Jessye DeSilva
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts and Folk All Y’all present Jessye DeSilva in The Green Room. \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nSaturday\, June 15\, 2024\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $20  \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \n\n\n\n\n\n  \nJessye DeSilva (she/they)’s new\, crowdfunded album\, Renovations\, chronicles an ongoing\, imperfect journey to self-love and -acceptance\, full of both moments of resignation and moments of triumph. \n\n\n\n\nDeSilva\, a non-binary\, trans person and the child of a preacher whose conservative religion left no room for their personhood\, examines identity and trauma and reckons with privilege and marginalization across 11 songs that draw from both their classical vocal training and work as a voice teacher for musical theater students at the Boston Conservatory at Berklee College of Music and their love of ’90s emo and pop-rock. The 2023 Nashville Scene artist to watch and 2022 Boston Music Awards Americana Artist of the Year nominee put queer and trans empowerment at the very heart of Renovations\, both in their encouraging\, vulnerable lyrics and in the musicians they enlisted to play on their songs.

SUMMARY:Dead Soldiers: Sad Songs and Story Time
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Dead Soldiers: Sad Songs and Story Time in The Green Room. \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nFriday\, June 21\, 2024\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $20  \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nDead Soldiers is an eight-piece band from Memphis\, Tennessee\, whose eclectic compositions feature a rock’n’roll core that lifts five-part vocal harmonies\, horns and strings to create a wall of sound. Building on the musical traditions of the Delta and the melting pot aesthetic that first made Memphis the home of rock and roll\, their music is at once irreverent and uniquely American. While firmly rooted in the modern urban South\, they draw heavily from the inspiration of a range of artists: Tom Waits to The Band\, John Prine and Bob Dylan to Frank Zappa and Randy Newman. Like Dead Soldiers\, they’re all artists who refuse to be easily classified. With humor\, cynicism and an underlying foundation of humanity\, Dead Soldiers’ songs root for the underdog while skewering the hypocrisy of the post-modern media landscape. \n\nOn the heels of their first new music release since 2017 — Dead Soldiers: Ride EP — the band also has a video premiere on June 6 at the Memphis Listening Lab. Recognized for their raucous and rowdy shows\, they seldom get to perform a fair bit of their catalog that is more conducive to a listening room environment. This show will feature many of Dead Soldiers’ least-performed songs and unique arrangements of existing songs in their live repertoire.

In this culmination of speech\, artists expose their own experiences with southern vernacular. All content will reflect the various interpretations from local Memphis-based artist in their hometown. The show will explore how southern speech has shaped their view of community and themselves. \nHidden Gems\nTo level up we must get out of our own way. SUMMARY:Modern Masters Jazz Series: Joe Locke and The Ted Ludwig Trio
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents the Modern Masters Jazz Series: Joe Locke and The Ted Ludwig Trio in The Green Room. \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nWednesday\, August 7\, 2024\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $20 in advance | $25 at the door | $10 student tickets \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nLong known to be a soloist capable of stunning physical power and broad emotional range\, it was not until the last decades that Joe Locke emerged as the composer\, bandleader and conceptualist that he is considered today. \nThis is in no small part due to his prolific solo projects\, notably Four Walls of Freedom\, a 6 movement suite featuring the late tenor saxophonist Bob Berg; Live in Seattle (Origin) by The Joe Locke / Geoffrey Keezer Group which won the 2006 EarShot award for Concert of the Year and his eloquent and vibrant quartet Force Of Four (Origin). \nLocke’s latest album\, Subtle Disguise (2018) is being celebrated “a crowning achievement from a certified vibraphone master” by Jazziz Magazine and means very much a happy continuation of his search to unite his love of composition with the connective qualities of melody and groove. \nLocke is a six-time recipient of the Jazz Journalists Association’s “Mallet Instrumentalist of the Year” Award and has won numerous further awards and polls. In 2016 he was honored with the induction into the Music Hall of Fame of his hometown Rochester\, NY. He is an active clinician and educator in the United States and in Europe and is holding the title of Honorary Associate of London’s Royal Academy Of Music (Hon ARAM) since 2013.
