SUMMARY:PUBLIQuartet
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents GRAMMY-nominated PUBLIQuartet at Crosstown Theater. \n\n\n\n\n\nCrosstown Theater\nTuesday\, October 18\, 2022\nDoors at 7pm | Show at 7:30pm \nTickets: $20 in advance | $25 day of the show ($10 student tickets)\nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nApplauded by The Washington Post as “a perfect encapsulation of today’s trends in chamber music\,” and by The New Yorker as “independent-minded\,” the GRAMMY-nominated PUBLIQuartet’s modern interpretation of chamber music makes them one of the most dynamic artists of their generation.  Dedicated to presenting new works for string quartet\, PUBLIQuartet rose on the music scene as winner of the 2013 Concert Artists Guild’s New Music/New Places award\, and in 2019 garnered Chamber Music America’s prestigious Visionary Award for outstanding and innovative approaches to contemporary classical\, jazz\, and world chamber music.  PQ’s genre-bending programs range from 20th century masterworks to newly commissioned pieces\, alongside re-imaginations of classical works featuring open-form improvisations that expand the techniques and aesthetic of the traditional string quartet. \nPUBLIQuartet has served as artist-in-residence at top institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and National Sawdust and has appeared at a wide variety of venues and festivals\, from Carnegie Hall and the Newport Jazz Festival to The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Their latest album\, the GRAMMY-nominated Freedom and Faith\, debuted atop the Billboard Classical Charts in May 2019. The 2019-2020 season brings a diverse array of programs to venues across the United States and abroad\, including an appearance at the String Quartet Biennale in Amsterdam. \nPUBLIQuartet’s commitment to supporting emerging composers inspired their innovative program\, PUBLIQ Access\, which promotes emerging composers and presents a wide variety of under-represented music for string quartet–from classical\, jazz and electronic\, to non-notated\, world and improvised music. Other unique projects include MIND|THE|GAP\, a series of group-composed works developed by PQ to generate interest in new music while also engaging traditional classical music audiences. These unique creations range from “Bird in Paris” (Claude Debussy meets Charlie Parker) to more recent extended works including “What Is American?” (an exploration of Dvorak’s beloved “American” String Quartet) and Sancta Femina (based on themes by three medieval and baroque female composers). \nFounded in 2010\, PUBLIQuartet is currently based in New York City. \nThis programming is made possible in part thanks to an Organizational Development Fund grant from New Music USA.

A Platinum-selling artist\, Koz is also known as a humanitarian\, entrepreneur\, radio host and instrumental music advocate. \nKIRK WHALUM \nSoulful\, passionate\, stirring…these are the words most often used to describe Kirk’s music. Forged from his Memphis\, (TN) gospel roots and his 1980‘s initiation into the thriving Houston\, TX nightclub scene\, Kirk’s big\, rich tenor sound is unmistakably his. The 80’s were highlighted by Kirk’s stepping out of his blossoming sideman role and forming his own band. It was there that Kirk ultimately developed both his “voice” and songwriting in the crucible of the local club scene––especially at a rooftop club called Cody’s. It was also in Houston where jazz pianist Bob James “discovered” him and brought him on tour\, which led to five successful albums with Columbia Records\, including Cache\, Kirk’s first #1 album. As well\, Kirk and Bob received a Grammy nomination for their collaboration album\, Joined at the Hip. After moving to Los Angeles\, Kirk became an in demand session player for top artists like\, Barbara Streisand\, Al Jarreau\, Luther Vandross\, Larry Carlton\, Quincy Jones and most notably\, Whitney Houston\, amongst many others. It’s his sax heard on the mega-hit\, “I Will Always Love You.” Kirk soon followed that career high point with his phenomenal hit album released on Warner Bros. Records\, For You\, perhaps the most successful of over 25 solo recordings to date; others include his eclectic\, and much lauded\, Gospel According to Jazz series\, (Chapters 1\, 2\, 3 and 4). In addition to his many solo projects\, Kirk was also a member of the popular soul/jazz group\, BWB\, which features Kirk as the “W” of the group with Rick Braun (trumpet) and Norman Brown (guitar). \nKirk is the recipient of numerous awards and acknowledgements for his musical excellence including three Dove Award nominations\, an NAACP Image Award nomination and has won two Stellar Awards- Gospel music’s highest honor. A twelve time Grammy nominee\, Kirk won his first Grammy award (2011)for Best Gospel Song (“It’s What I Do”––featuring Lalah Hathaway) alongside life-long friend and gifted songwriter\, Jerry Peters.

And she’s further sharing her message in the music of her eagerly awaited “Americana” album\, following 2019’s critically acclaimed “We Belong.” In all things\, Lewis does her best to live by the creed she and her ensemble have become known for: Practice Radical Decency. DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents the Amina Figarova Sextet in the Green Room. \n\n\n\n\n\nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nFriday\, October 7\, 2022\nDoors at 7pm | Show at 7:30pm \nTickets: $20 advance | $25 day of the show ($10 student tickets available)\nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \n“…Many of the strongest composer-arranger-orchestra leaders in jazz are women. Think Toshiko Akiyoshi\, Carla Bley\, Maria Schneider. Amina Figarova has a chance to join their company. All she needs is an orchestra. Figarova’s compositions for small ensemble have been brilliant since at least 2005\, when she released September Suite\, still the deepest\, most powerful jazz response to the events of 9/11…” by Thomas Conrad for Stereophile Magazine \nAmina Figarova is a quite phenomenal Azerbaijan-born\, New York-based pianist and stunning composer. Her sextet is fast developing a huge reputation on the international scene. Amina has toured extensively\, developing a tight-knit ensemble that\, despite inevitable personnel changes\, has attained a distinctive and inimitable voice by concentrating on all-original repertoire for almost 18 years. During that period\, having collaborated with musicians residing in both the U.S. and Europe and having built up a circuit of welcoming venues\, the Amina Figarova Sextet has triumphed at the main stage of the Newport Jazz Festival\, been invited repeatedly to New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival\, won critical and audience acclaim in Chicago\, Detroit\, Paris\, Amsterdam — and of course New York. \nAmina’s pieces strike a perfect tone\, employing genuinely beautiful harmonizations\, to capture fleeting thoughts that accompany those precious moments when the puzzling jostle of daily existence comes into unexpected but deeply satisfying sync. \nThis tour is a CD release tour for the new album JOY.

SUMMARY:Crosstown Arthouse presents SPIDER BABY
DESCRIPTION:The Crosstown Arthouse Film Series presents SPIDER BABY at Crosstown Theater. \nJack Hill / 1967 / 81 minutes / N/R\nTickets: $5 at the door\nFilms begin at 7:30 pm (sharp!) at Crosstown Theater \nThe first solo feature from exploitation legend Jack Hill (Foxy Brown)\, Spider Baby remains one of the wildest and weirdest horror films of the 1960s. The credits dub this “the maddest story ever told\,” a promise that’s well on the way to being fulfilled in the opening scene alone\, when Virginia traps and kills a hapless deliveryman in her makeshift web. She’s one of three siblings\, including Sid Haig\, who suffer from a unique genetic disorder that causes them to regress back to childhood while retaining the physical strength and sexual maturity of adults. Lon Chaney Jr. (The Wolf Man) gives one of his most memorable late performances as Bruno\, who manages to cover up the crimes of the “kids” until two distant relatives lay claim to their house. Blending elements of gothic horror and gallows humor\, Spider Baby drops somewhere between The Addams Family and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. \nThe Crosstown Arthouse Film Series showcases a diverse collection of independent\, international\, historically significant\, artistic\, experimental\, cult\, underground and documentary features.

DESCRIPTION:The Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nSaturday\, October 1\, 2022\nDoors open at 7PM | Show begins at 7:30PM\nTickets: $15 in advance | $20 day of the show \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nMemphis native She’Chinah’s love for music has roots deeper than she can remember. As a child\, she sang with her church choir\, and music has continued to soothe her throughout her life. “I have no idea how\,” she says\, “but when I sing the frustration I get with being misunderstood and unheard completely goes away and I am soothed. Music loved me first really\, so I fell for it back.” \nWhen she was young\, she was forbidden to listen to even the faintest\, briefest note of secular music\, and she didn’t find her own voice until years later. As a senior in high school\, She’Chinah began writing songs\, and in college at the University of Memphis\, she recorded features for other musicians. \nInspired by her entrepreneurial parents\, She’Chinah decided to take her God-given talent and step into the spotlight. Originating from a musically inclined family\, her voice has finally found its place. She’Chinah uses her music to face reality\, and the free-spirited singer prides herself on making authentic and relatable music. Her debut EP\, Solitaire\, was released in 2017. Now\, after moving to LA and experiencing some life\, She’Chinah is preparing to share her sophomore EP this fall.

SUMMARY:Shai Maestro Quartet + Strings
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Theater\nFriday\, September 30\, 2022\nDoors open at 7pm | Show begins at 8pm\nTickets: $30 in advance | $35 day of the show \nPurchase tickets here \n“Expressions of joy\, introspective thoughts and heightened intensity all come to the fore” – Downbeat Magazine \n“His piano style fits into a particular modern tradition\, one that combines ultra-clean classical technique with a strong interest in repetitive\, almost looping figures and romantic melodies” – Stereogum \nShai Maestro (1987) is one of the most promising and talented pianists of his generation. Since his debut with his own trio in 2011\, Shai has shaped a strong and unique personal identity and has portrayed an incredible musical fluidity\, making him and his band one of the most powerful and harmonious groups in jazz today. \n2018 marked an important year for Shai\, signing with major jazz label ECM and recording his first album The Dream Thief there\, featuring his trio\, but also him as a solo-pianist. Introspective\, lyrical\, virtuosic and differentiated. In its review of The Dream Thief\, All About Jazz spoke of “a searching lyrical atmosphere\, emotional eloquence and communal virtuosity that serves the music.” All of which also applies to Human\, Shai’s latest release on ECM\, where Maestro’s outgoing\, highly-communicative band with fellow Israeli Ofri Nehemya on drums and Peruvian bassist Jorge Roeder becomes a quartet with the inspired addition of US trumpeter Philip Dizack. Shai’s expansive pianism is well-matched by Dizack’s alert\, quick-thinking approach to improvising. And\, as ever\, Maestro is taking the music forward while also respecting its sense of tradition. Human was recorded at Studios la Buissonne in the South of France in February 2020\, and produced by Manfred Eicher. \nShai Maestro began playing classical piano at age five and graduated with honors from the Thelma Yell in High School of Performing Arts in Givataim\, Israel. After winning the National Jazz Ensembles Competition “Jazz Signs” in 2002 and 2003 and receiving excellency scholarships 2004-2010 from the America-Israel Cultural Fund for jazz piano\, Maestro attended Berklee College of Music’s Five-Week Summer Performance Program in Boston\, where he was awarded a full scholarship to attend Berklee full-time—an offer Maestro ultimately declined. \nMaestro’s intuitions proved right: just a few weeks later\, he received a phone call from bassist Avishai Cohen\, known for his long-time collaboration with Chick Corea as well as for his successful band-leading career. The bassist called to invite Maestro to join the Avishai Cohen Trio with drummer Mark Guiliana. Maestro recorded four albums with the Avishai Cohen Trio\, including two on Blue Note Records: Gently Disturbed (2008)\, Sensitive Hours (2008)\, Aurora (2009)\, and Seven Seas (2011). The trio toured the world and played at some of the world’s most renowned venues and festivals. \nIn July 2010\, Maestro formed his own trio and just a few months later\, recorded their well-received first album\, Shai Maestro Trio\, for the French label Laborie Jazz. The trio began an intense schedule of touring the world\, playing up to 80 concerts a year and sharing stages with groups led by Chick Corea\, Tigran Hamasyan\, Esperanza Spalding\, and Diana Krall. In 2012\, the trio released their second album for Laborie Jazz\, entitled The Road to Ithaca\, making an even more personal and intimate statement\, going back to the essence of their being: unedited and raw. \nFollowing that line of thought\, Shai released recent albums Untold Stories and The Stone Skippe‘ in October 2014 and November 2016. Listeners and the media outlets alike\, including DownBeat Magazine\, NPR\, BBC\, JazzFM\, TSF\, and WBGO’s The Checkout\, received the albums with critical acclaim. With these albums\, Maestro entered a new phase in his artistry: taking time\, fearing less\, daring more\, and allowing the music to unfold organically\, more than ever. Especially live\, the natural developments made the trio one of the most powerful and harmonious groups in jazz. The past few years\, the trio has performed at the most renown stages\, venues and festivals worldwide. \nBesides his trio\, Maestro recorded on vocalist Theo Bleckmann’s album Elegy. Maestro has also received critical acclaim appearing on Mark Guiliana’s Jazz Quartet’s debut album Family First (2015). Most recently\, Shai recorded on saxophonist Ben Wendel’s album High Heart (Edition Records\, 2020). \nWithin the past couple of years\, Shai reached two important career milestones: he signed with Sony / ATV Music Publishing and was invited to perform with Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra\, conducted by Keitaro Harada\, at Tokyo Metropolitan Theater. The program consisted of Miho Hazama’s first piano concerto as well as Shai’s original music.

In 2020\, he released his most recent EP Safer at Home to the public which yielded support and allowed him to begin generating local recognition. \nAs a former Crosstown Arts resident artist\, Brandon was able to actively collaborate with artists from different walks\, backgrounds\, and practices. This inspired him to explore the creation of similar art spaces in collaboration with Crosstown Arts in order to continue the sharing of ideas\, vibes\, and perspectives through music. As an artist and Memphis native\, Brandon hopes that the Evergreen Sessions will allow such environments to take place for the foreseeable future. \nIn paying homage to Memphis’ Historic Evergreen district in mind\, the “Evergreen Sessions” seeks to serve as a quarterly showcase of musical talents from a wide scale of artists with various backgrounds\, and perspectives. This will be the first session of hopefully many more to come that sheds light and emphasizes independent/underground artists locally and beyond. Although there’s a focus on shining light on underground/independent Hip Hop & R&B artists\, the Evergreen Sessions seeks to create an all-inclusive space of collaboration for all musical creatives and genres.

DESCRIPTION:The Crosstown Arthouse Film Series presents BRANDED TO KILL at Crosstown Theater. \nSeijun Suzuki / 1967 / 91 minutes / N/R\nTickets: $5 at the door\nFilms begin at 7:30 pm (sharp!) at Crosstown Theater \nWhen Japanese new wave bad boy Seijun Suzuki delivered this brutal\, hilarious\, and visually inspired masterpiece to the executives at his studio\, he was promptly fired. Branded to Kill tells the ecstatically bent story of a yakuza assassin with a fetish for sniffing steamed rice (the chipmunk-cheeked superstar Joe Shishido) who botches a job and ends up a target himself. The multi-instrumental band’s other ‘not-nots’ encompass traditions from across America\, including bluegrass\, Appalachian fiddle tunes\, jazz\, and minimalism. Invoke weaves all of these styles together to create truly individual music written by and for the group. \nThe band has recently garnered major prizes at international competitions including winning First Prize at the M-Prize International Chamber Arts competition in Ann Arbor\, MI\, the First Prize in the Coltman Competition in Austin\, TX\, and the “New Music/New Places” prize at Concert Artists Guild Victor Elmaleh Competition in New York. The group’s 20-21 season will take them across North America performing concert engagements and participating in major educational residencies. Highlights include performances at Lincoln Center\, Norton Center for the Arts\, Newberry Opera House and Green Music Center. \nInvoke has shared the stage with some of the most acclaimed ensembles in the country\, ranging from the Ensō Quartet to the U.S. Army Field Band\, and has also appeared with musicians in greatly varying genres – from chamber rock powerhouse San Fermin to DC beatboxer/rapper/spoons virtuoso Christylez Bacon. \nInvoke’s debut release Souls in the Mud\, and their follow-up Furious Creek\, both feature original works composed by and for the group\, plus the quartet has also performed and recorded numerous world premieres. Invoke believes in championing diverse American voices\, including their ongoing commissioning project American Postcards\, which asks composers to pick a time and place in American history and tell their story through Invoke’s unique artistry. \nInvoke is currently based in Austin\, Texas. \nThis programming is made possible in part thanks to an Organizational Development Fund grant from New Music USA.

SUMMARY:Fula Brothers
DESCRIPTION:The Green Room\, Crosstown Arts \nDoors open at 7pm | Show begins at 7:30pm \nTickets: $20 advance | $25 at the door \nPurchase tickets here \nFula Brothers are a burst of unbridled creative musicianship and happy making. A high spirited meeting of veteran performers from West Africa and America\, each with a history of innovation and collaboration with some of the beloved musicians of these cultures. Together they weave West African hunter’s harp\, fingerstyle guitar\, drums\, vocals\, and a bounty of improvisation into an ecstatic groove based dialogue which the heart – and the feet – cannot resist. \nMamadou Sidibe \nMaster kamale ngoni player\, Mamadou Sidibe\, is from the Wassoulou Region of Mali\, West Africa. Twenty-five years ago\, Mamadou played a groundbreaking role in the transformation of this region’s music from its origins in hunters’ sacred melodies – played on six string donso ngoni (hunter’s harps) – to a music of philosophical observations\, politics\, and daily life. Mamadou was one of the first to expand the instrument’s range with two extra strings\, creating the popular kamale ngoni. He has recently enhanced the kamale ngoni even further by devising 10 and 12-stringed instruments. \nMamadou\, with artists Coumba Sidibe\, Oumou Sangare and Ramata Diakite\, spread the new sounds through recordings and performances in Europe\, Africa and the United States. Not only is Mamadou an award-winning musician and master of the kamale ngoni\, he is accomplished on several other African instruments as well. \n“At the center of his music is the same sensibility that you’ll find in Muddy Waters: a sense of music as a tool for the re-creation of everyday life into something special\, even magical.” ~ Stylus \nWalter Strauss \nFingerstyle guitarist Walter Strauss’s multi-layered style draws on American roots\, jazz\, classical\, and cultural guitar traditions – but what makes his playing utterly unique is how it is informed by other global stringed instruments. He has delved deep into the harp traditions of West Africa\, integrating elements of their richly layered styles and rhythmic sensibilities with his own\, and rendering traditional pieces on the guitar. Walter has collaborated with revered practitioners of the kora (the 21-stringed West African harp) and with early kamale ngoni (hunter’s harp) innovator Mamadou Sidibe. Malian kora legend Toumani Diabate calls Walter’s guitar rendering of the music of the kora “inspirational”\, and proposed Walter’s collaboration with his son\, Sidiki Diabate\, a West African star in his own right. \nIn addition to his solo CDs and performances across the US & UK\, Walter’s collaborations have spanned an impressive range of musicians\, from maverick multi-instrumentalist Joe Craven and Grammy-winning Malian kora player Mamadou Diabate to Scottish fiddler Johnny Hardie and Grammy-nominated guitar maestro Alex de Grassi. He has performed internationally at venues like the Kennedy Center\, the Celtic Connections Festival in Scotland\, and Le Diplomate in Bamako\, Mali. Recently\, he created music for the Ken Burns documentary film “Defying the Nazis.” \n“A many-layered\, multi-textured\, one-man folk festival” ~ Maverick Magazine

Essential viewing. \nAttempting to resurrect their failing marriage\, Peter and Marcia trample through the deserted countryside\, hoping a long weekend will patch up their differences. As they inadvertently destroy everything in their tracks\, scattering garbage and shooting anything that moves\, their callous disregard becomes apparent to them when the animals seek vengeance! \nThe Crosstown Arthouse Film Series showcases a diverse collection of independent\, international\, historically significant\, artistic\, experimental\, cult\, underground and documentary features.
