SUMMARY:Strictly Jazz: The Music of Chet Baker in The Green Room
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Strictly Jazz: The Music of Chet Baker in The Green Room \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nSunday\, April 13\, 2025\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $20 in advance (plus fees) | $25 at the door | $10 students with ID\nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \n\nThe Strictly Jazz Series\, a joint presentation by Crosstown Arts and Strictly Jazz Entertainment\, celebrates classic jazz music through contemporary interpretations by acclaimed musicians.\nTrumpeter and vocalist Chet Baker is one of the most well-known and revered of all jazz musicians. His smooth sound and interpretation of jazz and popular standards made him a true original in the art form. Join the Jeremy Shrader Quartet as we celebrate the music and the musician\, performing many hits from Chet Baker’s recorded catalog of American music. The concert also features long-time collaborators and Memphis jazz legends Jim Spake\, Alvie Givhan\, Bob Buckley\, and Earl Lowe.\nTo say that Jeremy Shrader loves good music would be an understatement. His passion shines through in the notes he plays on trumpet\, his singing of classic songs\, and the many bands he leads\, including the New Memphis Hepcats\, the Hot Memphis Five\, and the Jeremy Shrader Octet. Throughout his musical career in Memphis\, he has remained busy\, performing in countless settings\, with jazz as his main love.\nBorn in Clarksville\, Tennessee\, Jeremy was exposed to Southern gospel music early on. His parents were musicians—his father a drummer—and they sang standards like Chattanooga Choo Choo and Sentimental Journey around the house. He started piano at nine or ten\, learned guitar along the way\, and picked up trumpet in middle school to join the band. In high school\, he became immersed in swing and big band music\, playing in the jazz band and exploring other jazz styles.\nAt the University of Memphis\, he earned a degree in Jazz Composition while playing in multiple ensembles. As a sophomore\, he founded the New Memphis Hepcats\, which continues to thrive today. Jeremy also freelances across genres\, co-founded Electric Room Records\, and teaches privately—continuing to shape Memphis’s jazz scene with his passion and talent.

SUMMARY:Crosstown Arts presents Clark Sommer’s Feats Ephemera in The Green Room
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Clark Sommer’s Feats Ephemera in The Green Room \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nSaturday\, April 19\, 2025\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $25 (plus fees) | $30 at the door\nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \n\n\n\n\nIn the 15 years since signing on to Kurt Elling’s working band\, Grammy-Award Winning bassist Clark Sommers has emerged among Chicago’s indispensable bassists. He has filled his resume\, on stage and on disc\, in bands that range from the rambunctious 13-piece Chicago Yestet to the intimate settings of piano trios and vocalist-led quartets. His own projects include his open-sky trio Ba(SH) and the quintet Clark Sommers Lens. He’s collaborated with guitarists Jeff Parker and Matt Gold\, pianist Darrell Grant\, keyboard whiz Gary Versace\, and vibraphonist Joe Locke. His albums brim with his smart and tuneful compositions.\n\nBut by 2019\, he felt restricted in his musical development. “I wanted to get deeper into writing\,” he says now. ‘I wanted to see what I could do if I had the capacity to add more texture to a group – to go further into the exploration of harmonic possibilities\, and to try spreading out the sounds using different instruments.”\nIt is a *rare* opportunity to take in the beauty that is Clark Sommers’ large ensemble music and even rarer yet to feature a who’s-who of Memphis musicians in collaboration with some of Chicago’s most prolific talent.\n\nJoin Clark and his ensemble for ONE-night only in the Green Room at Crosstown Arts on Saturday\, April 19th at 7:30pm.

SUMMARY:Crosstown Arts Presents: Secret Mall Apartment (2025)
DESCRIPTION:Secret Mall Apartment (2025) In 2003\, eight Rhode Island artists created a secret apartment inside the busy Providence Place Mall and lived there for four years\, filming everything along the way. They snuck in furniture\, tapped into the mall’s electricity\, and even constructed a wall\, smuggling in more than two tons \nof cinder block. Far more than just a wild prank\, the secret apartment became a deeply meaningful place for its inhabitants. It was a personal expression of defiance against local gentrification\, a boundary-pushing work of public/private art\, a clubhouse in which large-scale charitable art projects were planned\, and\, finally\, a 750 square-foot “F you” to The Man. Featuring never-before-seen footage of the space and revealing the identities of all the participants for the first time\, SECRET MALL APARTMENT is more than just a bonkers true story. Director Jeremy Workman\, whose “Lily Topples The World” won the Grand Jury Prize at \nSXSW 2021\, delivers a poignant exploration of a group of artists who discovered their purpose within the most commercial and improbable places. Directed by Jeremy Workman. Rated N/R. 91 minutes. \n$5 at the door.

SUMMARY:Sean Pratt Listening Session at Memphis Listening Lab
DESCRIPTION:Sean Pratt Listening Session\n\n\nMay 16 @ 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm CDT \n\n\n\n\n\n\nSean Pratt is an American folk guitar player and singer-songwriter from Nebraska by way of the Dakotas. \n \nPratt played in Omaha punk and noise acts for the better part of a decade before developing a fascination with the songcraft of the likes of Van Zandt\, Prine and Chilton. Occasionally\, unearthing a set of original compositions at one of Omaha’s many dark corner bars. \n \nIn the still of the pandemic\, Pratt found himself focusing deeply on acoustics and how to color a space without amplification. \n \nIn December of 2023\, following a debut set of new material at the preeminent Grapefruit Records\, friend and collaborator Simon Joyner encouraged Pratt to record the songs from that night “quickly\, while everything is still new.”\n \nThree weeks later\, on New Year’s Day\, recording began at Another Recording Company with James Schroeder (Rosali\, David Nance and Mowed Sound) at the board. Over the next three days Pratt\, Megan Siebe\, Colin Duckworth and James Maakestad recorded what would become ‘Prairie Whistle Call’. All tracked live\, leaving time to breathe and never forcing it.
