Brandi will discuss her writing career and provide advice and practical tips on both the creative and business sides of the film and television industry. \nThe daughter of a juvenile detention officer mom and 2nd strike convicted felon dad led Brandi to writing characters that explore duality. While she started off as an actor\, she fell in love with the storytelling process after writing & producing a slew of short films. Recently wrapping up her role as a staff writer and recurring character on season two of Showtime’s YOUR HONOR\, Brandi is currently writing on the Bosch spin-off BALLARD. In her personal life\, Brandi splits her time between Memphis and Los Angeles. An advocate for criminal justice reform\, she works as a licensed private investigator while in between rooms. When she’s not spending time with her three sons\, you can find her decompressing via enjoying her first love: musical theatre. \nShoot & Splice is a FREE filmmaker forum presented by Crosstown Arts and Indie Memphis\, featuring a wide variety of technical\, educational\, and unique topics of interest to the Memphis filmmaking community.

Steeped in classical and jazz traditions\, his unique command of the guitar and different musical styles inspire his musical ventures with tradition and fearless innovation. \n\n\n\nHaque has toured and recorded with Joe Zawinul\, Billy Cobham\, Dave Holland\, Paquito D’Rivera\, Sting\, Zakir Hussain\, Bob James\, Joe Henderson and many others\, in addition to co-leading groups with Tony Monaco\, Paul Wertico\, Goran Ivanovic\, Garaj Mahal\, and The Chicago Immigrant Orchestra. There will also be a performance by spoken-word artist Matt Esteis (Strength in Words). \n\nMANE\nIn the South we have a language like no other. Some people think it’s drawn out\, others think it’s charming. Some folks may appropriate\, but none can replicate. In this culmination of speech\, artists expose their own experiences with southern vernacular. All content will reflect the various interpretations from local Memphis-based artist in their hometown. The show will explore how southern speech has shaped their view of community and themselves. \nHidden Gems\nTo level up we must get out of our own way. That can begin with taking a chance or creating one. In this exhibition we search for the hidden gems in our community. They are heavily influenced by the music of Louis Armstrong\, Duke Ellington\, Nat King Cole\, and many other early jazz legends.⁠\n⁠\nSunny Side provides a full New Orleans-style jazz band experience with three-part harmonies\, a solid rhythm section\, and an energetic vocalist and dancer.⁠\n⁠\nIn 2024 Sunny Side is planning their fourth national tour stopping in cities and towns between New Orleans\, New York\, and Ohio playing a variety of shows including several swing dance events.⁠ \nVictoria Doutón is a composer and multi-instrumentalist from Montevideo\, Uruguay. She studied classical flute at the National Conservatory of Music in Montevideo as well as the Montevideo University School of Music. \nVictoria has spent time in different countries across the globe — music has taken her to Venezuela\, Ecuador\, Argentina\, Chile\, Colombia\, and Brazil. \nAfter a few years in Rio de Janeiro\, she moved to the USA\, initially settling in Austin. She began collaborating with world-renowned international musicians\, and eventually made her way to New Orleans. There she is fully immersed in the rich musical culture that is the foundation of American music. \nShe’s been in New Orleans for five years\, where she is currently recording her first album. \nHer travels have inspired her to write music that goes from Afro-South American rhythms to contemporary jazz. Her music combines the different cultures and places she’s been traveling to create a rich and multi-hued sonic tapestry.

She performs with woodwinds and voice\, accompanied by instrumental ensembles\, and by electronic arrangements that use synthesizers\, drum machines\, live processing\, and other sounds.\n\n\n\nHer work slides easily from structured electronic pop to open-ended melodic explorations and big-band arrangements. She has scored film soundtracks\, written music for installation and performance art\, and explored prog\, jazz\, and electroacoustic ideas with groups including The Fabulous Truth\, Das Audit\, and a host of other collaborations. Essex’s second solo album\, The Fabulous Truth\, will be released by Soap Library in June 2024. Her debut solo album\, Here Appear\, was jointly released by Soap Library (cassette) and Sky Walking (LP) in 2018. She is a Composer In Residence at Crosstown Arts in Memphis\, TN\, in summer 2024. As a featured instrumentalist\, she has contributed to works by The God In Hackney\, Peter Gordon & Love of Life Orchestra\, James K\, Kevin Kenkel\, Liturgy\, Colin Self\, Mike Shiflet\, UCC Harlo\, and Peter Zummo\, among others.

Beginning in the early 1980s (with bands Visions\, Portrait\, and Reba and the Portables) and now currently fronting the Reba Russell Band\, Reba has covered most bases in the music industry including touring throughout the United States and Europe and releasing 8 albums independently. \n\n\n\n\nReba has lent her talents on stage and/or on recordings to U2 (When Love Comes To Town)\, Class of 55 Homecoming (featuring Johnny Cash\, Roy Orbison\, Jerry Lee Lewis\, Carl Perkins)\, Huey Lewis and the News (Soulsville album)\, Tracy Nelson\, Jim Dickinson\, Sid Selvidge\, Lucero\, and Jimmy Thackery\, and host of other artists. \n\n\n\n\nIn 2011\, Reba was nominated for the Koko Taylor Vocal Award by the Blues Foundation\, and more recently in November 2018 her band was honored with a Beale Street Brass Note. DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents the Modern Masters Jazz Series: Joe Locke and The Ted Ludwig Trio in The Green Room. \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nWednesday\, August 7\, 2024\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $20 in advance | $25 at the door | $10 student tickets \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nLong known to be a soloist capable of stunning physical power and broad emotional range\, it was not until the last decades that Joe Locke emerged as the composer\, bandleader and conceptualist that he is considered today. \nThis is in no small part due to his prolific solo projects\, notably Four Walls of Freedom\, a 6 movement suite featuring the late tenor saxophonist Bob Berg; Live in Seattle (Origin) by The Joe Locke / Geoffrey Keezer Group which won the 2006 EarShot award for Concert of the Year and his eloquent and vibrant quartet Force Of Four (Origin). \nLocke’s latest album\, Subtle Disguise (2018) is being celebrated “a crowning achievement from a certified vibraphone master” by Jazziz Magazine and means very much a happy continuation of his search to unite his love of composition with the connective qualities of melody and groove. \nLocke is a six-time recipient of the Jazz Journalists Association’s “Mallet Instrumentalist of the Year” Award and has won numerous further awards and polls. In 2016 he was honored with the induction into the Music Hall of Fame of his hometown Rochester\, NY. He is an active clinician and educator in the United States and in Europe and is holding the title of Honorary Associate of London’s Royal Academy Of Music (Hon ARAM) since 2013.

The conversation will be moderated by filmmaker Molly Wexler.\n\n\nEmmy and Grammy Award winning writer Robert Gordon is the author of 6 books\, and producer/director of 8 feature documentaries. He has focused on the American south—its music\, art\, and politics—to create an insider’s portrait of his home that is both nuanced and ribald. \nGordon’s most recent documentary\, Best of Enemies\, won an Emmy in 2017 for Outstanding Historical Documentary. It’s a film about the nationally televised enmity between William F. Buckley Jr. and Gore Vidal\, and how their 1968 nationally televised debates augured the age of spectacle television. Other films as director/producer include Stranded In Canton\, a collaboration with photographer William Eggleston\, and Respect Yourself: The Stax Records Story\, a story of the Civil Rights Movement and the rise of Black Power through the lens of southern soul music. \n\nGordon’s work has shown on PBS’s American Masters and Great Performances series\, A&E\, BBC\, Channel Four\, and many global networks. His writing has appeared in most major magazines and newspapers. With influences stemming from Miguel Zenon\, The Bad Plus\, Walter Smith III\, and Bjork\, Gardier is a saxophonist who juxtaposes the calmness of lush harmonies and cyclical melodies with the intensity of complex rhythms and fiery improvisation. Her first release with Green Mind Records\, Empathy\, was “a debut with a lot of something for everyone” (All About Jazz). \n\n\n\nComprised of an eclectic collection of original music\, Empathy revealed Gardier’s refined compositional sense and lyrical tone. With her second release\, Flyover Country\, Gardier “claim[ed] a space among rising saxophonists” (Downbeat) through the display of bold compositions and flexible improvisation. Amanda has performed with Ingrid Jensen\, Dave Stryker\, Leni Stern\, Wes “Warmdaddy” Anderson\, the Glenn Miller Orchestra\, the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra\, and many others. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Music Education and a master’s degree in Jazz Studies from Indiana University. Amanda is the Instructor of Jazz Saxophone at Ball State University in Muncie\, IN.

In these films Ray began discovering the limitless possibilities of montage as well as the direct application onto celluloid of objects such as salt\, pepper\, pins\, and thumbtacks. Juxtaposing undulating geometric patterns\, a twirling fairground ride\, and a female nude\, among other striking images\, Ray finds subconscious correspondences among seemingly incongruous materials and figures. In celebration of the hundredth anniversary of Le Retour à la raison\, the Jim Jarmusch-Carter Logan combo Sqürl present Man Ray: Return to Reason\, with a newly-recorded drone rock soundtrack for that title as well as the three other Ray films. When their famous logo came up on screen\, Scorsese says\, “You knew you were in for fantasy\, wonder\, magic – real film magic.” Now\, in this documentary\, he tells the story of his lifelong love-affair with their movies\, including The Life and Death Of Colonel Blimp\, Black Narcissus\, The Red Shoes and The Tales of Hoffmann. \n“Certain films you simply run all the time and you live with them.” Scorsese says. “As you grow older they grow deeper. I’m not sure how it happens\, but it does. Beginning in the early 1980s (with bands Visions\, Portrait\, and Reba and the Portables) and now currently fronting the Reba Russell Band\, Reba has covered most bases in the music industry including touring throughout the United States and Europe and releasing 8 albums independently. \n\n\n\n\nReba has lent her talents on stage and/or on recordings to U2 (When Love Comes To Town)\, Class of 55 Homecoming (featuring Johnny Cash\, Roy Orbison\, Jerry Lee Lewis\, Carl Perkins)\, Huey Lewis and the News (Soulsville album)\, Tracy Nelson\, Jim Dickinson\, Sid Selvidge\, Lucero\, and Jimmy Thackery\, and host of other artists. \n\n\n\n\nIn 2011\, Reba was nominated for the Koko Taylor Vocal Award by the Blues Foundation\, and more recently in November 2018 her band was honored with a Beale Street Brass Note. SOULFUL. COMPELLING.\n\n\nThese three words exemplify the sound of “Memphis Soul Man” Marcus Scott. Born and raised in Memphis\, TN. A city that is well known for world class soul music\, Marcus Scott is a world class Soul Singer. As a young boy\, he would sit with his ears glued to the radio\, mimicking every sound he heard. This fascination evolved into an insatiable desire to entertain and capture the hearts of audiences everywhere.\n\n\n\nHis musical journey started in 2005 as a hit in local Memphis talent shows and he quickly became known as the “go to” singer for all of the major gigs in Memphis. Larry Dodson of the legendary Barkays gave him a call to collaborate on the Album “House Party”.\n\n\n\nMarcus Scott was also the lead vocalist for one of the most incredible legendary soul bands of all times called Tower Of Power. Mr. Scott was their front man for four years\, from 2016 to 2020. As their leading man\, Marcus recorded on two of the bands most recent albums the 1st one titled “Soul Side of town” and the other titled “Step Up”.\n\n\n\nIf you close your eyes and listen to his voice you‘ll realize that Marcus is on the trajectory of becoming a truly elite soul singer in the vein of Marvin Gaye\, Aretha Franklin\, James Brown\, Sam Cooke\, and Otis Redding.
