Waking Up has nine songs\, all written by Michael Graber. “We wanted to push the boundary limits even more on this one\, staying song-centered\,” says Graber. \nThe album begins with a rambunctious saga of pent-up domesticity\, “All the Time.” The pensive meditation “Morning on the Water” follows with lead vocals by Kitty Dearing. “Taproot” starts with a 12-string\, followed with saxophone and hand percussion\, and features guests Hope Clayburn and Jesse Dakota. “Waking Up” is an “Astral Weeks in Memphis”-type of dream song\, about waking up in all connotations. “Living on a Faultline” finds the band at their funky best. Then Kitty takes the microphone again to lead “Hardcore Heartbreak”. Two more folk pop structured songs follow: “Okay” and “Good to You”. “Faultline”\, a Carter-family inspired song about living on the New Madrid Faultline closes the set. \nGraber Gryass includes Michael Graber (Guitar and Vocals)\, Kitty Dearing (Vocals and Saw)\, Andy Ratliff (Mandolin and Vocals)\, Andrew Geraci (Bass)\, Clint Wagner (12-string and Fiddle)\, Randal Morton (Banjo)\, Caleb Ryan Martin (High-strung Guitar and Baritone Banjo) with these guests: Jesse Dakota (Percussion)\, Hope Clayburn (Flute and Sax)\, and Joe Mahanahan (Vibraphone). At 14\, he started working as a studio session guitarist and soon began to be called to collaborate with a wide range of artists in his hometown\, then in Brazil\, then abroad. In 2002 Chico put together a band of his own and started recording as a leader. His first album\, ‘Meia Noite Meio Dia’ (Sony Music/ 2003)\, was released in 2003 with great reviews at all the most important newspapers and music magazines in Brazil and abroad and was included in the ‘Top 10 Brazilian albums of the year’ in the major newspapers of Brazil: ‘O Estado de São Paulo\,’ ‘A Folha de São Paulo’ and ‘O Globo.’ This well-received debut included special guest vocalists Lenine\, Ed Motta\, Chico César\, and Maria Rita. \nHis second release\, ‘Chico Pinheiro’ (Biscoito Fino/ 2005)\, enjoyed great critical and audience acclaim\, once more being included in the ‘Top 10 Brazilian albums of the year’ by newspapers’ O Estado\,’ ‘O Globo’ and ‘Folha de São Paulo.’ The third album\, NOVA\, was released in Dec/ 2007 in collaboration with the American guitarist and composer Anthony Wilson. It was\, again\, celebrated by critics and the audience. \nHis fourth album\, There’s a Storm Inside (CT Music Japan/ Sunnyside Records\, NY\, 2010)\, was released in 35 countries. It included guests such as Dianne Reeves and Bob Mintzer. It was featured on the downbeat\, Revista Veja\, O Estado de São Paulo\, Folha de São Paulo\, Jornal O GLOBO\, and Revista Rolling Stone among the ‘best albums of the year.’ This record also won prizes as Best Brazilian Jazz Álbum of the year and Best Latin Jazz Composition of 2010 with ‘Mamulengo’ in the Latin Jazz Corner Association\, USA. Chico also won as Best Latin Jazz Guitarist in the same association. \nIn 2012 he released the CD’ TRIZ’ in partnership with the pianist and composer André Mehmari and singer and composer Sergio Santos. Distinctly French\, somewhat theme-tune-style\, and a whole lot of groovy\, this duo is a blend of past and present. \nFounding members Rachel Ombredane and Stéphane Avellaneda have some serious weight behind them. Rachel studied classical flute and music at the Sorbonne and sang vocals for artists\, including Ed Sheeran. SteF is an internationally renowned blues drummer who’s played with and for the likes of BB King\, Ben Poole\, and Ana Popovic. \n“The care given to image and sound shows an artistic maturity\, a taste for innovation associated with an innate sense of melody and arrangements\,” — Rolling Stone \nRachel received her Bachelor of Music in Flute Performance\, a Diploma in Music Education\, and a Masters in Musicology at the Sorbonne in Paris and later pursued vocal studies. Rachel is passionate about many musical genres. Thus\, her music career has extended into numerous avenues\, including TV performances singing with international artists such as Ed Sheeran\, Jain\, Brocken Back\, etc.\, and in prestigious venues such as the Zenith in Paris. \nSteF is a drummer and international touring artist. He started his professional journey as part of the band Mercy and later collaborated with Serbian guitarist Ana Popovic. He became her official drummer and has toured worldwide to over 30 countries. He has played with: Carlos Johnson\, Ben Poole\, and Robyn Bennett… and shared the stage with musicians such as Jonny Lang\, BB King\, Keb Mo\, and Buddy Guy. Stef was voted as one of the TOP 5 Blues Drummers by the ”Drummies” award 2015. It feels easy. I immediately felt that way with Sean.” \nGarrison is talking about Sean McConnell\, her musical partner in My Sister\, My Brother\, a new group with the kind of natural magic that only happens when kismet masquerades as coincidence. Individually\, they are independent solo artists known for smart songwriting and breathtaking vocals. Together\, their voices reach that rarefied air typically reserved for families: harmonies that twin and snake around each other to hypnotize and soothe. “When we started writing and especially when we started singing together\, it was like\, ‘Wow. DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents the Mahogany Chamber Music Series: “Mahogany Magic” at Crosstown Theater. \nCrosstown Theater\nSunday\, April 30\, 2023\nDoors at 5:30 pm | Concert at 6 pm\nTickets: $20 | $5 students \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nThe Mahogany Chamber Music Series is a series of three chamber music concerts curated by Dr. Artina McCain\, spotlighting Black and other underrepresented composers and performers. \nFeaturing: \nTitus Underwood\, oboe \nCremaine Booker\, cello \nCaitlin Edwards\, violin \nArtina McCain\, piano \nTitus Underwood\, oboe  \nTitus Underwood is Principal Oboe of the Nashville Symphony Orchestra\, Cincinnati Conservatory of Music associate professor\, Emmy Award winner\, and 2021 recipient of the Sphinx Medal of Excellence award. He received his Master of Music from The Juilliard School and bachelors from the Cleveland Institute of Music. Also\, he has played with the Los Angeles Philharmonic\, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra\, Miami Symphony Orchestra\, Florida Orchestra\, Atlanta Symphony\, Puerto Rico Symphony\, and San Diego Symphony. Mr. Underwood has also played principal in Chineke!\, Gateways Music Festival\, and Bellingham Festival of Music. Underwood serves as teaching artist for Aspen Music Festival and the National Youth Orchestras program at Carnegie Hall. He also teaches and mentors for the National Alliance for Audition Support program maintained by the League of American Orchestras\, The Sphinx Organization\, and New World Symphony. His latest project was a short film he directed entitled “A Tale of Two Tails”. \nCaitlin Edwards\, violin \nViolinist Caitlin Edwards began her musical journey at the age of eight within a non-profit organization in her hometown of Birmingham\, Alabama. She later attended the University of Louisville (BM) and DePaul University (MM). Caitlin is a 2022 Esteemed Artist Award recipient from the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events\, a 2021 3Arts/Walder Foundation awardee\, 2018 Gateways Music Festival Rising Star\, a co-curator with the Fulcrum Point New Music Project\, and a former fellow with the Chicago Sinfonietta. In addition\, she has received Grammy certificates for recordings on Disney’s “The Lion King” and for albums by John Legend and PJ Morton. She released her debut album\, “Exhale\,” in 2021. Caitlin is a classically trained violinist\, but she’s inspired by gospel\, jazz\, hip-hop\, and neo-soul. She composes original music and intentionally performs the works of Black composers to help ensure that these composers and their compositions are remembered and spotlighted for aspiring young BIPOC musicians and the world as a whole. Caitlin is a proud member of D-Composed and Ensemble Dal Niente. \nCremaine Booker\, cello \nNashville based cellist\, Cremaine Booker (also known as ThatCelloGuy)\, has performed extensively in the United States in addition to being a highly accomplished studio cellist. He currently serves as a cellist in the Iris Orchestra and is former principal cellist for the Nashville Philharmonic Orchestra and The Jackson Symphony. He has also made appearances with the Trevecca Symphony\, the Sewanee Symphony\, Roy “Futureman” Wooten’s Black Mozart Ensemble\, and the Nashville Concerto Orchestra. He has performed with the likes of Hans Zimmer\, Carrie Underwood\, India.Arie\, Mickey Guyton\, Martina McBride\, Jewel\, Lindsey Stirling\, Michael W. Smith\, LeAnn Rhimes\, Mike Hicks\, and many others. In addition to his live performances he has recorded cello on projects such as Geostorm (2017)\, The Lion King (2019)\, and The Ruined King (2021). \nCremaine has performed masterclasses with teachers such as Natalia Koma\, YeonJin Kim\, Julia Tanner\, Eric Kutz\, Peter Sheppard\, and Yo-Yo Ma. Cremaine holds degrees from Middle Tennessee State University. \nCremaine plays on a modern cello gifted to him by William H. and Judith Scheide. \nArtina McCain\, piano \nDescribed as a pianist with “power and finesse”\, “beautiful and fiery” (KMFA Austin) and having a “sense of color\, balance and texture” (Austin Chamber Music Center) Artina McCain\, has built a three-fold career as a performer\, educator and speaker. As a recitalist\, her credits include performances at Wigmore Hall and Barbican Centre in London\, Weill Hall at Carnegie and Merkin Hall in New York City and more. Other highlights include guest appearances with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra\, Memphis Symphony Orchestra and Fox Valley Symphony Orchestra. \nDedicated to promoting the works of Black and other underrepresented composers\, McCain curates Underrepresented Composers Concerts for multiple arts organizations. She is an American Prize winner for her solo piano recordings of these works and won a Gold Global Music Award for her recent album project Heritage. In 2021\, Hal Leonard published her transcriptions of Twenty-Four Traditional African American Folk Songs. In 2022\, she was the mistress of ceremony for the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. \nMcCain was a featured inspirational leader in the award-winning PBS documentary series Roadtrip Nation: Degree of Impact in an episode exploring the real-world impact of professionals with doctoral degrees in and outside of academia. \nMcCain’s performances have been heard on Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK)\, Germany’s WDR and television appearances including features on CSPAN for the MLK 50 Commemoration. McCain is a three-time Global Music Awards winner including collaborative projects I\, Too (Naxos)\, with soprano Icy Monroe\, focused on African American Spirituals and Art Songs and Shades\, a collaboration with her husband and duo partner Martin McCain. \nAfter not performing for 6 years while battling a performance injury\, she now enjoys a prolific concert career with more than 10 years of full injury recovery. She uses her recovery to serve as an advocate of musicians’ wellness–curating articles\, lectures\, and forums to educate teachers and students. Her article on performance injury and Muscle Activation Techniques was published in the Piano Magazine. McCain has presented on wellness and other topics at Universities and the Music Teachers National Association Conference and the National Conference of Keyboard Pedagogy. \nMcCain graduated cum laude from Southern Methodist University. She received her Master of Music from Cleveland Institute of Music and holds a doctoral degree from the University of Texas at Austin. Currently\, she is Associate Professor of Piano and Coordinator of the Keyboard Area at the Rudi E. During the Southside Johnny tour\, Gareth was invited by Southside to be flown over to the USA to open for his annual New Years Eve concert at the Count Basie Theatre in New Jersey. \nThe following year Gareth was invited by Tommy Emmanuel to be the support act for his UK tour\, following extensive UK supports to Jan Akkerman\, Andy McKee and appearing at numerous Folk Festivals and Guitar workshops including the Montreal Jazz Festival. \nWith appearances throughout Europe and a growing reputation\, Gareth was invited to perform at the 2008 Canadian Guitar Festival where he came to the attention of Candyrat Records. This lay the seed for Gareth to be the first UK guitarist to be signed by the label. This iteration’s performance will feature jazz singer Jazzmeia Horn. \nJAZZMEIA HORN\nJazzmeia Horn is an American jazz singer and songwriter. She won the Thelonious Monk Institute International Jazz Competition in 2015. Horn’s repertoire includes jazz standards and covers of songs from other genres\, including by artists such as Stevie Wonder. She has been compared to jazz vocalists such as Betty Carter\, Sarah Vaughan\, and Nancy Wilson. \n“Horn is among the most exciting young vocalists in jazz\, with a proud traditionalism that keeps her tightly linked to the sound of classic figures like Nancy Wilson and Betty Carter\, but a vivacity of spirit and conviction that places her firmly in the present.” — The New York Times \nKIRK WHALUM\nSoulful\, passionate\, stirring…these are the words most often used to describe Kirk’s music. Forged from his Memphis\, Tennessee\, gospel roots and his 1980s initiation into the thriving Houston\, TX nightclub scene\, Kirk’s big\, rich tenor sound is unmistakably his. The ’80s were highlighted by Kirk’s stepping out of his blossoming sideman role and forming his own band. It was there that Kirk ultimately developed both his “voice” and songwriting in the crucible of the local club scene—especially at a rooftop club called Cody’s. It was also in Houston where jazz pianist Bob James “discovered” him and brought him on tour\, which led to five successful albums with Columbia Records\, including Cache\, Kirk’s first #1 album. As well\, Kirk and Bob received a Grammy nomination for their collaboration album\, Joined at the Hip. After moving to Los Angeles\, Kirk became an in demand session player for top artists like\, Barbara Streisand\, Al Jarreau\, Luther Vandross\, Larry Carlton\, Quincy Jones and most notably\, Whitney Houston\, amongst many others. It’s his sax heard on the mega-hit\, “I Will Always Love You.” Kirk soon followed that career high point with his phenomenal hit album released on Warner Bros. Records\, For You\, perhaps the most successful of over 25 solo recordings to date; others include his eclectic\, and much lauded\, Gospel According to Jazz series\, (Chapters 1\, 2\, 3 and 4). In addition to his many solo projects\, Kirk was also a member of the popular soul/jazz group\, BWB\, which features Kirk as the “W” of the group with Rick Braun (trumpet) and Norman Brown (guitar). \nKirk is the recipient of numerous awards and acknowledgements for his musical excellence including three Dove Award nominations\, an NAACP Image Award nomination and has won two Stellar Awards- Gospel music’s highest honor. DESCRIPTION:The Galleries at Crosstown Arts\nFriday\, April 21\, 2023\nTimes: 6-8 pm\nTickets: Free and open to the public \nCrosstown Arts announces its spring 2023 arts programming — “Deceive the Heavens to Cross the Seas” by McLean Fahnestock\, “Edgewise: Exploring Pattern and Rhythm with Line” by Khara Woods\, “Entrances\, Exits and the Spaces Betwixt” by Tangela Mathis\, and “Color Thread” by Carl Fox. \nThe opening reception is scheduled for Friday\, April 21\, 6-8 p.m. The exhibitions run from Saturday\, April 22\, through Sunday\, August 6. \nScreening Room:\nMcLean Fahnestock — “Deceive the Heavens to Cross the Seas” \nThis exhibition is composed of videos from McLean Fahnestock’s Stratagem series\, where the sea and sky flip and merge to generate a new\, seductive yet false horizon. Stratagems are plans or schemes that are designed to deceive. Usually referring to warfare\, they are a well-executed artifice upon an enemy. Working with her interest in desire as it manifests in the landscape\, these works present the ways that our desires can open a door to our ultimate deception. \nIn a presentation unique to Crosstown Arts\, the videos have been loaded into a custom program that randomly chooses the video and the length of time the video will loop before the next one is randomly chosen to play. Viewers will have a shifting experience that will never repeat. \nThe title for the exhibition comes from the first of the 36 Stratagems – a 6th century Chinese text covering political\, military\, and social strategy written by an unknown scholar. \nMcLean Fahnestock works with the dynamically changing landscape. Her practice is centered on our desire for specific visual and physical landscapes as manifested through the concept of paradise. This has led to investigations into how this desire has been the catalyst for climate change\, colonialism\, and ecocide. She utilizes digital forms of collage\, video\, and new media. McLean received a BFA from Middle Tennessee State University and MFA from California State University Long Beach. Her work has been exhibited and screened across the United States and internationally. Her work was selected for Off the Screen at the 57th Ann Arbor Film Festival. She has been an artist in residence at Stove Works in Chattanooga\, Tennessee\, and The Lock-Up in Newcastle\, New South Wales\, Australia. McLean keeps her studio in Old Hickory\, Tennessee. \nEast Gallery: \nKhara Woods — “Edgewise: Exploring Pattern and Rhythm with Line” \n“Edgewise: Exploring Pattern and Rhythm with Line” presents a collection of paintings\, sculpture and creative devices developed since 2016. The works examine the creation of movement and texture focusing on a restricted set of grids\, bold colors and shapes inspired by basic geometry. Within these confines\, there are arrangements that intertwine\, shift and vibrate across canvas and wood. \nKhara Woods was born and raised in Memphis\, Tennessee. She comes from a family of artists and craftspeople. She continues the tradition with her geometric abstract paintings and sculpture. Woods began working as a public artist in 2015\, creating and installing murals. In 2016\, she began her studio practice. Woods works primarily with wood\, using it as a canvas or to make 3D art. Mural Arts Philadelphia commissioned Woods as a lead artist for its Art & Environment Initiative in 2019. She completed her first large-scale data visualization mural\, “Basin Portraits\,” in October of that year. She created paintings and mini sculptural studies for her first solo exhibition in October 2020 at the Beverly and Sam Ross Gallery at Christian Brothers University. Some of Woods’ latest op-art-inspired paintings and a layered wood sculpture were displayed in the Axis exhibition at Hilliard Art Museum in Lafayette\, Louisiana in 2021. Since then\, Woods is continuing to develop her studio practice and making more 3D works. and State Fellowship Program\, and was the finalist for the Southern Prize. \nWest Gallery: \nTangela Mathis — “Entrances\, Exits and the Spaces Betwixt” \n“Entrances\, Exits and the Spaces Betwixt” presents contrasting aspects of personality\, showcasing the yin and yang of pneuma. The exhibit represents a mental\, emotional\, and spiritual transformation within a palpable dreamscape. Works presented depict and embrace ideas of transitory spaces visually\, mentally and physically. \n“Entrances\, Exits and the Spaces Betwixt” offers the public a glimpse into the unfiltered psyche of TANGELA. The exhibit presents contrasting aspects of her personality\, showcasing the yin and yang of her pneuma. TANGELA is undergoing a mental\, emotional\, and spiritual transformation\, and invites visitors to witness her journey as she ebbs and flows. \nArt Bar Bar Top: \nCarl Fox — “Color Thread” \n“Color Thread” by Carl Fox is a mixed-media installation featuring works in acrylic\, oil\, and watercolor paired with text. The installation invites the viewer to move along a tapestry of color and hold space for Carl’s thoughts on the nature of color and how an examination of that nature can be brought to other aspects of life. Do colors have identity? Can one re-create an experience of color? How do the richest colors — browns\, coppers\, maroons — seem to slide under us\, unnoticed\, as we move through everyday life?

Cortés updates the canon with a treasure trove of rarely seen archival footage of Penniman. Among the gems are scenes with his Black and queer predecessors and contemporaries\, like Sister Rosetta Tharpe\, the mother of rock ’n’ roll who gave 14-year-old Penniman his first break. Artists in residence will have their studios open on Friday\, April 14\, from 6 to 9 p.m. \nThis event is free and open to the public. \nSu-Yee Lin writes stories and poetry that grapple with issues of identity\, memory\, environment\, and mythology. Her work often lies on the border between the real and the strange\, and she is interested in the intersections between the surreal and the natural world. She was a Fulbright Fellow to China and has had work published in the Pushcart Prize anthology\, Tor.com\, Electric Literature\, Bennington Review\, Day One\, Nashville Review\, The Offing\, and other literary journals\, and short stories translated into Italian and Chinese. \nKeith S. Wilson is an Affrilachian Poet and a Cave Canem fellow. He is a recipient of an NEA Fellowship\, an Elizabeth George Foundation Grant\, and an Illinois Arts Council Agency Award\, and has received both a Kenyon Review Fellowship and a Stegner Fellowship. His book\, Fieldnotes on Ordinary Love (Copper Canyon)\, was recognized by the New York Times as a best new book of poetry. \nEdo Rosenblith (B. 1988 Tel Aviv\, Israel) received a BFA in painting in 2011 at the Rhode Island School of Design and an MFA in Visual Art at Washington University-St. Louis in 2017. Edo is a compulsive draftsman who works in a variety of mediums: murals\, painting\, drawing\, printmaking\, and book arts. \nKelsey Harrison’s sculptural work has been shown in institutions nationally including The Jewish Museum\, Abrons Art Center\, and The Knockdown Center in New York\, SOMArts in San Francisco\, The Sullivan Galleries in Chicago\, The College of William and Mary in Virginia\, and the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art and the Utah Museum of Fine Art in Salt Lake City. Harrison received her BFA in Sculpture from Purchase College\, State University of New York and her MFA in Sculpture at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She is Assistant Professor of Sculpture at the University of Memphis. \nApollo Mighty is a Memphis-born R&B/Soul artist. He uses his music to express his many selves\, embracing the extremes of his own personal ugliness and beauty — while also reflecting the world around him. He has worked extensively in the music scenes in Memphis and Chicago and his 2020 EP project Behavior amassed over 600k streams across platforms. \nJennifer Sargent makes intricate drawings and handwoven tapestries. As an artist weaver she considers herself both a contemporary practitioner and a part of a longer continuum that is thousands of years old. This idea is both a comfort and a challenge. One of two elements is always present in Sargent’s work\, either story telling or the natural world (whether wild or domesticated). Sargent creates an abstracted sense of these ideas or experiences through the layering of pattern and color.

Jamie Stewart sings on half of the record. \nHalf of the songs are experimental industrial. Half of the songs are experimental modern classical. Half of it is real. Half of it is imaginary. \nThe real songs attempt to turn the worst life has offered to five people the band is connected with into some kind of desperate shape that does something\, anything\, other than grind and brutalize their hearts and memory within these stunningly horrendous experiences. \nThe imaginary songs are an expansion and abstract exploration of the early rock and roll “Teen Tragedy” genre as jumping off point to decontaminate the band’s own overwhelming emotions in knowing and living with what has happened to these five people. \nWhat none of this record does and despite the oft repeated assertion\, what Xiu Xiu has never done\, is attempt to superficially shock the listener. Instead\, Xiu Xiu has spent twenty years grappling with how to process\, to be empathetic towards\, to disobey and to reorganize horror; there is no other word for it other than horror. \nThe motivation for writing Ignore Grief to be about a child who was sold into prostitution by his mother\, a junior high student who was kidnapped and murdered\, incessantly choosing alcohol and cocaine over one’s family\, becoming lost in the bleakest\, darkest aspects of cultish spirituality and committing suicide as means to escape and protest a life of violent sex work is because the members of Xiu Xiu themselves are deeply shocked. \nOld friend and new member David Kendrick (Sparks\, Devo\, Gleaming Spires) joins Angela Seo and Jamie Stewart through whatever this may be and whatever it may mean and why ever it may have occurred. The point of aesthetic examination is to see if there is any way to come out the other side or if there is even any reason. Born into a musical family\, he began his musical career studying classical clarinet. In his early 20s\, while preparing for a symphony career he discovered jazz saxophone and hasn’t looked back. \nIn 1992\, he started playing with the legendary drummer\, Elvin Jones\, and he recorded his first CD\, Crazy Love. As a sought after sideman he has played with many prominent jazz artists including: Andrew Hill\, Tom Harrell\, Dave Douglas\, Wynton Marsalis\, Jay McShann\, Nicholas Payton\, Roy Hargrove\, Steve Coleman\, Betty Carter\, Don Byron\, Bill Frisell\, Rashied Ali\, Ellis Marsalis\, Brian Lynch\, John Patitucci\, and many more. He has also performed and/or recorded along with many other notable saxophonists\, such as Joe Lovano\, Mark Turner\, Chris Potter\, Dewey Redman\, Ravi Coltrane\, and others. In more recent years\, Tardy has gone full circle\, by focusing on his clarinets more\, using them on recordings by Tom Harrell\, Ohad Talmor/Steve Swallow\, Stefan Harris\, Chris Potter and Andrew Hill. \nHis performance schedule has taken him all over the world\, playing at all of the major jazz festivals and on some of the biggest stages in jazz. As a sideman\, he has been featured on several Downbeat Albums of the Year and also several Grammy nominated recordings; including a Grammy winning CD with Brian Lynch in 2006. He also has recorded fourteen CDs under his own name featuring his unique compositions\, blending his love of traditional jazz with a more modern seeking style. His latest project\, If Time Could Stand Still\, was released in the fall of 2020 on WJ3 Records.

It’s as though she’s a family recipe\, kept hidden until now. \nFellow musicians have described her sound as “country-neo-pop.” As a Millennial\, it’s often quite difficult to pin her down to one particular genre. Her sound blends elements of North Indian classical\, noise/ambient electronics\, beat-driven psych and experimental dance pop. The work references her hybrid identity as a first-generation South Asian-American\, Sikh upbringing\, musical education\, as well as the chaos and spirituality of the landscapes of both Baltimore and urban India. \nPicking up her first sitar when she was twelve years old\, Dang has studied North Indian classical music (voice and sitar) in both New Delhi and Maryland\, and she also holds a degree in music technology & composition from Oberlin College Conservatory of Music. Following in the footsteps of artists like Ravi Shankar and Philip Glass\, she seeks to advance the sound of contemporary experimental\, pop\, and electronic music with the sounds of South Asia — through vocals and sitar\, ragas\, and sampling. And vice versa\, she aims to bring a broader sound palette to the legacy of South Asian music. These goals are a lifelong mission. To that end\, she has collaborated with Animal Collective\, William Cashion (of Future Islands)\, James Acaster\, Thor Harris — to name a few. She has provided tour support for Beach House\, black midi\, Grimes\, Lower Dens\, Florist and more.

Far from wanting to create a stamp of the traditional and to define the Mediterranean\, Tarta Relena wants to make its own a repertoire that goes from music of oral tradition to songs of author that in one way or another are related to the geographical area of the Mediterranean. \nTarta Relena sings from the perspective that what we call folklore is a living and moving repertoire. Therefore\, this reality is mouldable and can be reinterpreted with the instruments and sonorities that we now have within our reach. A key tool is the electronics with which they re-signify the melodies without leaving aside their origins. The study and knowledge of the path and the contexts that have given rise to these musics opens the doors of experimentation towards new meanings. In Tarta Relena’s work there is also a desire to play at blurring the concept of authorship\, bringing together anonymous traditional melodies and newly created songs under the same umbrella\, treating them in the same way and placing oral transmission\, the central element of tradition\, at the centre. \nOne of the strong points of the project is the complexity in simplicity and the maximum expression with the minimum of elements. The repertoire work brings together the resources of different vocal techniques (flamenco\, lyrical\, traditional\, jazz…)\, allowing a vast exploration of the possibilities of the voice. \nIn January 2019 Tarta Relena released her first album entitled Ora Pro Nobis (The Indian Runners\, 2019)\, winner of the Enderrock Critics’ Prize for the best folk album of 2019\, which consists of eight a cappella songs with a subtle presence of electronics. In April 2020\, during their confinement\, they released their second work\, Intercede Pro Nobis (The Indian Runners\, 2020)\, recognised by Rockdelux as the best national EP of 2020\, which emphasises the importance of the dialogue between voice and electronics. \nFiat Lux is the first full-length album and is an exploration of the concept of cyclicality through memory\, nostalgia and the evocation of feelings. The love poems written by Sappho of Lesbos or traditional Sephardic songs deal with the same emotional problems we face as individuals in 2021. Whether in archaic Greece\, in medieval times or in the midst of a global pandemic\, the self goes through the same processes of joy and pain\, closes them and begins again\, unable to avoid the course of things. Each poetic “I” illuminates itself in the midst of all the others to say what it has to say. \nThrough the stories of powerful and time-transcendent characters\, such as the Vingen Mary\, Hildegard of Bingen or the Paixtu tribe of women in Afghanistan\, the timelessness and transcendence of these voices and their discourses are explored\, revisited and sung from today’s perspective. \nTarta Relena are: \nMarta Torrella\, voice and electronics. \nHelena Ros\, voice and electronics.
