SUMMARY:Frog Squad Plays Horace Silver
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Frog Squad in the Green Room at Crosstown Arts. \nThe Green Room\nFriday\, November 11\, 2022\nDoors at 7PM | Show at 7:30PM\nTickets $15 | $12 in advance \nFrog Squad is an outlet for creative expression and sound exploration based in Memphis\, Tennessee. Their songs pull heavily on improvisation within loose structures\, creating a psychedelic\, avant-garde jazz sound. \nThe group curates and arranges songs from artists such as Thelonious Monk\, Erik Satie\, and Horace Silver\, and bandleader David Collins composes eclectic\, original music. Overall\, Frog Squad gently defies the standards of what defines “good music” by composing song templates with experimental elements. In autumn of 2019\, Frog Squad released Solar System in Peabody\, a full-length work funded by the UrbanArts Commission. The Memphis Flyer called it “one of the most incredible pieces of music that came across our threshold this year.”

SUMMARY:Film Screening by Resident Artists R Jason Rawlings and Angelo Madsen Minax
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents NATIVES and NORTH BY CURRENT at Crosstown Theater. \nFree and open to the public\nDoors at 6:00 p.m.\, and films begin at 6:30 p.m. in Crosstown Theater. \nTwo films will be screened\, with a brief Q&A with the artists after the screening. \nIn Natives\, a short film by fall session artist in residence R Jason Rawlings\, two years after Hurricane Katrina\, a claims adjuster returns home to The Delta to little fanfare. \nIn fall session artist in residence Angelo Madsen Minax’s feature-length film North by Current\, after the inconclusive death of his young niece\, the filmmaker returns to his rural Michigan hometown\, preparing to make a film about a broken criminal justice system. Instead\, he pivots to excavate the depths of generational addiction\, Christian fervor\, and trans embodiment. Lyrically assembled images\, decades of home movies\, and ethereal narration form an idiosyncratic and poetic undertow that guide a viewer through lifetimes and relationships. Like the relentless Michigan seasons\, the meaning of family shifts\, as Madsen\, his sister\, and his parents strive tirelessly to accept each other. Poised to incite more internal searching than provide clear statements or easy answers\, North by Current is a visual rumination on the understated relationships between mothers and children\, truths and myths\, losses and gains.

SUMMARY:The Chills’ Soft Bomb 30th Anniversary Tour with Unwed Sailor and Ibex Clone
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents The Chills with Unwed Sailor and Ibex Clone in collaboration with Goner Records. \n\nDoors at 7pm | Show begins at 7:30pm\nTickets: $20 \nPurchase tickets here \nOriginally released in 1992\, The Chills’ third album Soft Bomb is often stated as their finest hour. \nIn 2022\, as their monumental record approaches its 30th Anniversary\, The Chills will be heading to the US for a North American tour that sees them performing a three decade career spanning set. This milestone tour will see The Chills perform music from 1992-2022\, it will also include music from their most recent album Scatterbrain which they’ll be touring in the US for the first time since its release. \nA conceptual classic that embraces styles and genres\, Soft Bomb is an eclectic slow cooked musical stew\, rich and rewarding from the much-loved storytelling songwriter Martin Phillipps. It features contributions from giants of contemporary American music including Van Dyke Parks and ex dB’s Peter Holsapple as collaborators. \nMartin Phillipps (Guitar/Vox) \nJames Dickson (Bass/Backing Vocals) \nTodd Knudson(Drums/Backing Vocals) \nErica Scally (Guitar/Keyboards/Violin/Backing Vocals) \nOli Wilson(Keyboards/Backing Vocals) \n  \nUnwed Sailor \nThe journey of Unwed Sailor began in Seattle\, WA in 1998\, shortly after Johnathon Ford departed critically praised bands Roadside Monument and Pedro the Lion. While working within those projects\, Ford began writing instrumental music after listening to Tortoise\, Pullman\, and seeing bands like Physics perform live. After recruiting Dave Bazan (Pedro the Lion)\, Casey Wescott (Fleet Foxes)\, and Melissa Palladino (Danielson Famile) to play on the now classic Firecracker EP\, Unwed Sailor was born. Two decades and seventeen releases later\, Ford has continued to rely on the band as a device for personal exploration and emotive narration. Unwed Sailor now joins forces with Spartan Records for the release of their latest moody and cinematic journey\, Truth or Consequences\, a sonic examination of particular memories or moments in Johnathon Ford’s life\, with each song serving as a unique snapshot of an overarching narrative. Truth or Consequences is shaped around familiar musical DNA. Heavily present\, driving\, and stacked bass lines; wandering and evolving song structures; soaring crescendos and moody diminuendos; and\, of course\, a gripping sense of sonic storytelling.

This October the ensemble tours Ohio\, visiting Kent State University\, Kent State’s Stark Campus\, and Oberlin. Ditson Fund\, the Aaron Copland Fund\, the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council\, the New York Women Composers Organization\, the Brooklyn Arts Council\, and the Puffin Foundation. Unheard-of was a recipient of a Chamber Music America Classical Commissioning Grant to commission recent Rome Prize-winner Christopher Stark\, as well as a Chamber Music America Ensemble Forward Grant made possible with support of the New York Community Trust. \nTheir debut album Unheard-of//Dialogues was released to critical acclaim: “a fantastic debut by a group that has been doing more than their part to inject vitality into the new music scene for the last few years” (Jeremy Shatan\, An Earful). The album’s eclectic repertoire has garnered the attention of critics from ArtsATL (“Powerfully evocative”)\, Steve Smith of National Sawdust Log (“scintillating and evocative”)\, and Creative Loafing Atlanta (“mellifluous magic”). \nThis programming is made possible in part thanks to an Organizational Development Fund grant from New Music USA.

SUMMARY:Mike Dowling
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents GRAMMY-nominated American roots guitarist Mike Dowling in the Green Room. \n\n\n\n\n\nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nFriday\, October 21\, 2022\nDoors open at 7pm | Show begins at 7:30pm \nTickets: $15 advance | $20 day of the show\nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nWhen the late\, great Vassar Clements heard Mike Dowling play guitar back in 1975 he did the sensible thing. He hired him. Mike was the guitarist in Vassar’s first touring band and can be heard on his GRAMMY-nominated “Nashville Jam”. Clements called him simply\, “One of the finest guitarists there is\, anywhere.”Echoing that sentiment is an ever-growing chorus of music critics\, guitar students\, and acoustic music fans from throughout the world. \nMike digs deep into the musical bag of American roots guitar\, favoring the melodic Piedmont style of acoustic blues masters like Mississippi John Hurt and slide great Tampa Red. But Mike can’t be pigeonholed as a blues player\, or even as a fingerstylist. He’s far too versatile for that. From bottleneck blues to vintage jazz and much more in between\, Mike’s musicality\, depth\, and mastery of the instrument translates fluently to flattop\, archtop\, and resonator guitars alike. \nMike grew up in central Wisconsin and early in his career in the midwest caught the ear of jazz violin great Joe Venuti and mandolinist Jethro Burns. In the 1970’s\, in addition to touring with Clements\, he worked and recorded with Burns and Venuti in Chicago and in between jobs took time off to move to California when he had the opportunity to study with the late\, great George Barnes. Barnes had been “the” session guy for many years\, recording with everyone from Big Bill Broonzy to Tony Bennett. “I was very fortunate to be able to spend some time with him”\, Mike says. ” He was so tasteful\, so rhythmic. He set the bar very high for me and he continues to be an inspiration.”

SUMMARY:PUBLIQuartet
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents GRAMMY-nominated PUBLIQuartet at Crosstown Theater. \n\n\n\n\n\nCrosstown Theater\nTuesday\, October 18\, 2022\nDoors at 7pm | Show at 7:30pm \nTickets: $20 in advance | $25 day of the show ($10 student tickets)\nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nApplauded by The Washington Post as “a perfect encapsulation of today’s trends in chamber music\,” and by The New Yorker as “independent-minded\,” the GRAMMY-nominated PUBLIQuartet’s modern interpretation of chamber music makes them one of the most dynamic artists of their generation.  Dedicated to presenting new works for string quartet\, PUBLIQuartet rose on the music scene as winner of the 2013 Concert Artists Guild’s New Music/New Places award\, and in 2019 garnered Chamber Music America’s prestigious Visionary Award for outstanding and innovative approaches to contemporary classical\, jazz\, and world chamber music.  PQ’s genre-bending programs range from 20th century masterworks to newly commissioned pieces\, alongside re-imaginations of classical works featuring open-form improvisations that expand the techniques and aesthetic of the traditional string quartet. \nPUBLIQuartet has served as artist-in-residence at top institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and National Sawdust and has appeared at a wide variety of venues and festivals\, from Carnegie Hall and the Newport Jazz Festival to The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Their latest album\, the GRAMMY-nominated Freedom and Faith\, debuted atop the Billboard Classical Charts in May 2019. The 2019-2020 season brings a diverse array of programs to venues across the United States and abroad\, including an appearance at the String Quartet Biennale in Amsterdam. \nPUBLIQuartet’s commitment to supporting emerging composers inspired their innovative program\, PUBLIQ Access\, which promotes emerging composers and presents a wide variety of under-represented music for string quartet–from classical\, jazz and electronic\, to non-notated\, world and improvised music. Other unique projects include MIND|THE|GAP\, a series of group-composed works developed by PQ to generate interest in new music while also engaging traditional classical music audiences. These unique creations range from “Bird in Paris” (Claude Debussy meets Charlie Parker) to more recent extended works including “What Is American?” (an exploration of Dvorak’s beloved “American” String Quartet) and Sancta Femina (based on themes by three medieval and baroque female composers). \nFounded in 2010\, PUBLIQuartet is currently based in New York City. \nThis programming is made possible in part thanks to an Organizational Development Fund grant from New Music USA.

Forged from his Memphis\, (TN) gospel roots and his 1980‘s initiation into the thriving Houston\, TX nightclub scene\, Kirk’s big\, rich tenor sound is unmistakably his. The 80’s were highlighted by Kirk’s stepping out of his blossoming sideman role and forming his own band. It was there that Kirk ultimately developed both his “voice” and songwriting in the crucible of the local club scene––especially at a rooftop club called Cody’s. It was also in Houston where jazz pianist Bob James “discovered” him and brought him on tour\, which led to five successful albums with Columbia Records\, including Cache\, Kirk’s first #1 album. As well\, Kirk and Bob received a Grammy nomination for their collaboration album\, Joined at the Hip. After moving to Los Angeles\, Kirk became an in demand session player for top artists like\, Barbara Streisand\, Al Jarreau\, Luther Vandross\, Larry Carlton\, Quincy Jones and most notably\, Whitney Houston\, amongst many others. It’s his sax heard on the mega-hit\, “I Will Always Love You.” Kirk soon followed that career high point with his phenomenal hit album released on Warner Bros. Records\, For You\, perhaps the most successful of over 25 solo recordings to date; others include his eclectic\, and much lauded\, Gospel According to Jazz series\, (Chapters 1\, 2\, 3 and 4). In addition to his many solo projects\, Kirk was also a member of the popular soul/jazz group\, BWB\, which features Kirk as the “W” of the group with Rick Braun (trumpet) and Norman Brown (guitar). \nKirk is the recipient of numerous awards and acknowledgements for his musical excellence including three Dove Award nominations\, an NAACP Image Award nomination and has won two Stellar Awards- Gospel music’s highest honor. A twelve time Grammy nominee\, Kirk won his first Grammy award (2011)for Best Gospel Song (“It’s What I Do”––featuring Lalah Hathaway) alongside life-long friend and gifted songwriter\, Jerry Peters.
