SUMMARY:Sierra Hull
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Sierra Hull on the Kemmons Wilson Family Stage at Crosstown Theater. \nCrosstown Theater\nThursday\, October 5\, 2023\nDoors open at 6:30 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $30-$40 \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nSierra Hull’s positively stellar career started early. That is\, if you consider a Grand Ole Opry debut at age 10\, called back to the famed stage a year later to perform with her hero and mentor Alison Krauss to be early. She played Carnegie Hall at 12; at 13 signed with Rounder Records and issued her debut\, Secrets\, and garnered the first of many nominations for Mandolin Player of the Year. She played the Kennedy Center at 16 and the next year became the first bluegrass musician to receive a Presidential Scholarship at the Berklee College of Music. As a 20-year-old\, Hull played the White House. \nIt’s only a two-hour drive to Nashville from her tiny hometown hamlet of Byrdstown\, Tennessee. Hull credits her family for paving the first few miles to Music Row. Her mother\, holding her as a toddler\, taught her to sing. She ran next door to hear Uncle Junior pick mandolin\, and listened intently to the church choir on Sundays. Her Christmas gift- a full-sized fiddle- proved too daunting. While waiting for a smaller replacement\, her father showed her some notes on the mandolin. Hull was hooked\, soon known as the eight-year-old wowing the locals at bluegrass jams. \nShe found inspiration in Krauss\, Ricky Skaggs\, and Sam Bush. And\, just as importantly\, affirmed her own sense of identity in the album covers of Rhonda Vincent\, the queen of bluegrass. She heard the words of her parents\, prepping her for life’s big moments yet to come\, repeatedly instilling the mantra: Hard work\, more than anything\, will get you somewhere. It certainly did. \nIn 2010\, Hull captured her first IBMA award for Recorded Event of the Year. She was shedding the prodigy tag\, turning virtuoso\, and releasing her second album\, Daybreak\, with seven of her own original compositions. In Byrdstown\, she hosted an eponymous annual bluegrass festival. \n“There’s a voice in the back of my head telling me to keep working\, to keep moving forward\,” Hull says. “You have to keep progressing and introducing new things.” \nBy 2016\, Hull had reached a more mature place in her life and in her art. She tapped legendary bluegrass musician Bela Fleck to produce her third album\, Weighted Mind. A departure from her opening pair of records that blended progressive elements with traditional structure\, Hull let go of whatever preconceptions existed- both hers and those of her audience- and birthed a Grammy-nominated masterpiece. \n“I created from a more vulnerable\, honest place by asking myself what kind of music will I make if I’m not at all concerned with genre\,” says Hull. “What do I want to say with my music? What do I want to feel when I stand onstage and sing these songs? I needed to have a deeper connection.” \nEnlisting bassist Ethan Jodziewicz (and Fleck on two cuts)\, and harnessing vocal contributions from Krauss\, Abigail Washburn\, and Rhiannon Giddens\, Hull trusted her foundation of influences to support this artistic leap. Months later she was taking home the Mandolin Player of the Year. After a near-decade of consecutive noms\, Hull broke that last glass ceiling\, becoming the first woman to win the prestigious title. Of all the numerous awards and achievements Sierra Hull has earned\, that one occupies a special place on the mantle. Then she took home a pair to join it\, winning again in 2017 and 2018. \nHull has maintained a rigorous touring schedule\, as well. Even when off the road\, she is frequently guesting with friends and legends\, joining such icons as the Indigo Girls\, Garth Brooks\, and Gillian Welch\, and performing at the Country Music Awards with Skaggs\, Brad Paisley\, and Marty Stuart. \nShe says she’s ready\, now\, for something new. Currently in the midst of work for the follow-up to Weighted Mind\, her next album will consist of all original songs. Beyond that\, there are tantalizing ideas she won’t divulge for collaborations and\, perhaps\, an all-instrumental record. There is a plan\, but not a timetable\, which is just fine. \n“I love playing music. It’s all I ever wanted to do. I don’t see it\, necessarily\, as a bad thing that I’m slow to make albums. I want my albums to be something I can be proud of.”

SUMMARY:This Must Be The Place: How Music Can Make Your City Better: Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:The Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nMonday\, October 2\, 2023\nTime: 6-8 pm\nTickets: Free \nREGISTER HERE \nShain Shapiro launches his new book\, This Must Be the Place: How Music Can Make Your City Better\, in conversation with Music Export Memphis’ Elizabeth Cawein. \nPresented by: Crosstown Arts\, University of Memphis School of Urban Affairs and Public Policy and Rhodes College Curb Institute. \nJoin Shain as he launches his book in one of the homes of American music — Memphis. Shain will be joined onstage and interviewed by Elizabeth Cawein\, Executive Director of Music Export Memphis. The discussion will be about the book\, about Memphis and how the city can foster economic and social growth through its incredible music assets. \nDoors: 6 pm \nInterview: 6:30-7:30 pm \nNetworking & signing: 7:30-8 pm \nAbout the book:\nThis Must Be the Place introduces and examines music’s relationship to cities. Not the influence cities have on music\, but the powerful impact music can have on how cities are developed\, built\, managed and governed. Told in an accessible way through personal stories from cities around the world — including London\, Melbourne\, Nashville\, Austin and Zurich — This Must Be the Place takes a truly global perspective on the ways music is integral to everyday life but neglected in public policy. Arguing for the transformative role of artists and musicians in a post-pandemic world\, This Must Be The Place not only examines the powerful impact music can have on our cities\, but also serves as a how-to guide and toolkit for music-lovers\, artists and activists everywhere to begin the process of reinventing the communities they live in.

SUMMARY:Kafé Kirk with Kirk Whalum & Keiko Matsui (SOLD OUT!)
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Kafé Kirk with Kirk Whalum and special guest Keiko Matsui in Crosstown Theater. \nSunday\, October 1\, 2023\nCrosstown Theater\nBox office opens at 5PM | Doors open at 5:30PM\nShow begins at 6PM\nTickets: SOLD OUT \nJoin Grammy-winning saxophonist Kirk Whalum for Kafé Kirk\, an ongoing jazz series in Crosstown Theater featuring musical and spiritual collaborations with special guest artists. This iteration’s performance will feature jazz pianist Keiko Matsui. \nKEIKO MATSUI\nKeiko who masters the delicate balance between career and motherhood (she has two daughters) feels an urgency to leave the world a better place for future generations. “I want to make a positive impact for children in this generation and the future. Through prayer and my music\, I hope to be able to increase more harmony on this planet.” Keiko succeeds in conjuring a harmonious affair on Euphoria. \n“Through prayer and my music\, I hope to be able to increase harmony on this planet.”- Keiko Matsui \nKIRK WHALUM\nSoulful\, passionate\, stirring…these are the words most often used to describe Kirk’s music. Forged from his Memphis\, Tennessee\, gospel roots and his 1980s initiation into the thriving Houston\, TX nightclub scene\, Kirk’s big\, rich tenor sound is unmistakably his. The ’80s were highlighted by Kirk’s stepping out of his blossoming sideman role and forming his own band. It was there that Kirk ultimately developed both his “voice” and songwriting in the crucible of the local club scene—especially at a rooftop club called Cody’s. It was also in Houston where jazz pianist Bob James “discovered” him and brought him on tour\, which led to five successful albums with Columbia Records\, including Cache\, Kirk’s first #1 album. As well\, Kirk and Bob received a Grammy nomination for their collaboration album\, Joined at the Hip. After moving to Los Angeles\, Kirk became an in demand session player for top artists like\, Barbara Streisand\, Al Jarreau\, Luther Vandross\, Larry Carlton\, Quincy Jones and most notably\, Whitney Houston\, amongst many others. It’s his sax heard on the mega-hit\, “I Will Always Love You.” Kirk soon followed that career high point with his phenomenal hit album released on Warner Bros. Records\, For You\, perhaps the most successful of over 25 solo recordings to date; others include his eclectic\, and much lauded\, Gospel According to Jazz series\, (Chapters 1\, 2\, 3 and 4). In addition to his many solo projects\, Kirk was also a member of the popular soul/jazz group\, BWB\, which features Kirk as the “W” of the group with Rick Braun (trumpet) and Norman Brown (guitar). \nKirk is the recipient of numerous awards and acknowledgements for his musical excellence including three Dove Award nominations\, an NAACP Image Award nomination and has won two Stellar Awards- Gospel music’s highest honor. A twelve time Grammy nominee\, Kirk won his first Grammy award (2011)for Best Gospel Song (“It’s What I Do”—featuring Lalah Hathaway) alongside life-long friend and gifted songwriter\, Jerry Peters.

SUMMARY:The Love Light Orchestra featuring John Németh
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents The Love Light Orchestra featuring John Németh at Crosstown Theater. \nCrosstown Theater\nSaturday\, September 30\, 2023\nDoors open at 6:30 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\n$25 in advance | $30 at the door \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nThough born from the desire to rekindle enthusiasm for the grand\, orchestral sound of mid-20th century blues\, The Love Light Orchestra is much more than a nostalgia act. Formed in 2016 as a nod to the sound and visual flair prevalent early in careers of beloved Memphis stalwarts B.B. King and Bobby Bland\, the Love Light Orchestra is as much a manifestation of the current moment as it is a throwback to a bygone era of nightclubs packed to the brim with partygoerseager to take in an evening of down-home musicality with a touch of class. \nThe collective vision of trumpeter Marc Franklin\, guitarist Joe Restivo\, and vocalist John Németh has earned the ensemble favorable responses from the public and press alike. The Memphis Commercial Appeal noted the band’s immersive qualities\, transporting listeners to a pivotal scene in which jazz and blues maintained influence over Memphis’ soul burgeoning sound. Writer Bob Mehr lauded the band for “re-conjuring a sound and style that was dominant in Memphis\, and that would have a formative influence on the young artists who would come to stock the rosters of Stax Records and Hi Records in the decades to come.” \nCompletion of Leave the Light On\, the group’s studio debut\, reflects three-years of sheer determination to coordinate schedules of a group consisting of Memphis’ most in-demand artists\, in addition to navigating the unforeseen impact of a global health crisis on the entire music industry. Though the maturity and dexterity of the orchestra members shone loud and clear on the group’s first release\, the sophomore effort refines and elevates the group’s presentation\, employing a clarity and quality complementary to the veteran musicianship within Love Light’s ranks. Tossing the songbook aside in favor of mostly original tunes\, Love Light proves their staying power and reinforces an outlook pointed toward the future while honoring the context of their collective musical past.

SUMMARY:The Crosstown Arts Film Series presents: SQUARING THE CIRCLE (THE STORY OF HIPGNOSIS)
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts and the Memphis Listening Lab present Squaring the Circle (The Story of Hipgnosis) at Crosstown Theater. \nCrosstown Theater\nThursday\, September 21\, 2023\nTickets: $5 at the door\nDoors at 6:30 p.m. | Films begin at 7:00 p.m. (sharp!) at Crosstown Theater \nAnton Corbijn / 2022 / 101 minutes / Not Rated \nThe story of the album art design studio\, Hipgnosis\, who created some of the most iconic album covers of all time. Whether you’re a fan of Pink Floyd or not\, chances are you know exactly what the album covers of The Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here look like. But you might not be familiar with the creative duo behind those iconic images: Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey “Po” Powell\, aka the innovative design studio Hipgnosis. \nHipgnosis went from making covers for their mates (the likes of David Gilmour and Syd Barrett) to establishing themselves as the driving force behind visual identities of some of the most popular artists of the 1970s (think Led Zeppelin and Paul McCartney). Their methods were unconventional\, their budgets often unreasonable\, but they were fearless visionaries who artfully manipulated photographic images long before computer graphics became ubiquitous. \nThe Crosstown Arts Film Series showcases a diverse collection of independent\, international\, historically significant\, artistic\, experimental\, cult\, underground\, and documentary features.

DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Hermon Mehari & Peter Schlamb Quartet in The Green Room. \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nWednesday\, September 20\, 2023\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $15 in advance | $20 day of the show \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nThe performers:\nHermon Mehari – trumpet\nPeter Schlamb – vibraphone\nBob DeBoo – bass\nJoe Hibbs – drums \nIn the attempt to pioneer a new sound while exploring his Eritrean origins\, trumpeter Hermon Mehari composed an album entirely influenced by the harmonies\, rhythms\, and melodies of Eritrean music. However this work\, “Asmara” (Komos)\, doesn’t only come from his musical side — the songs have an emotional bent and express the different aspects of his perspectives towards his relationship with family and the culture. Hermon Mehari’s 2020 sophomore album as a leader\, “A Change For the Dreamlike” (MiRR)\, takes on a more personal tone. Written and recorded in a barn in the French countryside during le confinement\, it shows only hints at the aesthetic set by his previous debut album. Although he already had a growing reputation\, the success of Mehari’s debut album \,”Bleu”\, put him concretely on the musical map in 2017. “Bleu” includes ECM recording artist Aaron Parks on piano\, Blue Note recording artist Logan Richardson on alto saxophone\, Peter Schlamb on vibraphone\, Ryan J. Lee on drums and Rick Rosato on bass. \nMehari was the winner of the 2015 Carmine Caruso International Trumpet Competition and a semifinalist in the 2014 Thelonious Monk Jazz Competition. In 2014 he released the CD “Our Journey” with Diverse\, his second with the group. Mehari maintains a touring schedule around the world with his own group and as a sideman. Mehari was also the winner of the 2008 National Trumpet Competition and placed 2nd in the International Trumpet Guild competition in Sydney\, Australia. As a founding member of Diverse\, whose eponymous debut album on Seattle-based Origin Records reached the Top 40 on the Jazzweek Radio Charts\, he has performed professionally with noted saxophonists Jaleel Shaw\, Logan Richardson\, Bobby Watson\, Ben Van Gelder\, and Tivon Pennicott. He has also performed with Aaron Parks\, Joe Sanders\, Hubert Laws\, Randy Brecker\, Tony Tixier\, Dave Pietro\, Clay Jenkins and many other great musicians. \nHermon Mehari received his BM in Jazz Performance from the University of Missouri – Kansas City Conservatory of Music and Dance in 2010. In addition to performing\, he dedicates himself to being a serious educator\, runs a weekly musical radio program called “The Session” on the NPR-affiliated station KCUR 89.3\, is an artistic director of the Collectif MiRR and has participated in arts related clinics and panels around the world. \nPeter Schlamb is a vibraphonist and pianist based in Kansas City\, MO. He recently released second album “Electric Tinks” and maintains a busy schedule performing locally\, nationally and internationally. Peter spent several years in New York where he attended and graduated from New School University. During his time in New York\, he recorded and performed with artists including Logan Richardson\, David Binney\, Mike Moreno\, and Ben van Gelder. Peter currently leads the group Electric Tinks and is a member of Logan Richardson’s Blues People as well as frequently performing with several other ensembles around the world.

SUMMARY:Brandee Younger (SOLD OUT)
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Brandee Younger in The Green Room. \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nFriday\, September 15\, 2023\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: SOLD OUT \nThe sonically innovative harpist\, Brandee Younger\, is revolutionizing harp for the digital era. Over the past fifteen years\, she has worked relentlessly to stretch boundaries and limitations for harpists. In 2022\, she made history by becoming the first Black woman to be nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Composition. That same year\, she was also nominated for an NAACP Image Award. Ever-expanding as an artist\, she has worked with cultural icons including Common\, Lauryn Hill\, John Legend\, and Moses Sumney. Her current album\, Brand New Life\, builds on her already rich oeuvre\, and cements the harp’s place in pop culture. As the title of the album suggests\, Brand New Life is about forging new paths–artistic\, personal\, political\, and spiritual. On this album\, Younger salutes her musical foremother\, the trailblazing harpist Dorothy Ashby\, while also speaking to the sentiments of more recent generations. “We’re bringing new life to Dorothy Ashby’s popular and previously unreleased compositions. We’re creating new life…for the instrument\,” Younger said. Brand New Life is an album about living fully\, in neon bright color. \nIn March of 2022\, Younger flew to Chicago and began recording Brand New Life in the home studio of her long time collaborator and friend\, Makaya McCraven\, who both produced and played drums on the album. In the Windy City\, Younger hoped to harness some of Ashby’s funky energy from a recording she did there nearly five decades before. Younger gathered artists who have had a sense of kinship with Ashby; from the internationally-lauded neo-soul bassist/vocalist/rapper Meshell Ndegeocello\, to her long-time bassist Rashaan Carter\, plus the legendary rapper and producer Pete Rock and the talented contemporary producer 9th Wonder. The latter producers introduced hip hop and R&B listeners to Ashby in the 1990s and early 2000s via slick samples. Pete Rock and CL Smooth’s 1992 release\, “For Pete’s Sake\,” samples Ashby’s 1968 hit “Come Live With Me.” 9th Wonder’s remix of singer Amerie’s 2003 R&B classic “Why Don’t We Fall in Love\,” also includes a Dorothy Ashby sample from “Come Live With Me.” With Younger’s solo rendition of this heavily sampled song on Brand New Life\, she builds a sonic bridge between generations. “I wanted everyone on the record to have a special connection to Dorothy [Ashby]\,” she said. For the project\, Younger also recorded a number of Ashby’s compositions that were never recorded before\, alongside Ashby fan favorites and Younger originals. \nThe emotional complexity of the album is stunningly captured in the title track\, “Brand New Life\,” an original co-written by Younger and singer\, Mumu Fresh. “This love is so deep\, time and space couldn’t keep you away from me\,” Mumu Fresh sings. Younger’s playing paints lush details over Mumu Fresh’s smooth vocals leaving nothing to be sonically desired. Against the backdrop of current social issues–climate change\, racism\, health disparities\, and women’s rights–the song speaks to a desire that many people have for change\, for something new in the world. “Brand New Life” reaches listeners at the level of the human. \nLove is a subtle but insistent thread throughout the album. The opening track\, “You’re a Girl For One Man Only\,” is a previously unrecorded Dorothy Ashby composition. Sonically\, it is tender and evocative of a first kiss or the early seasons of new romance. Younger recalls the original song’s lyrics’ more traditional message of romantic longing that we still hear in popular music today. Boy chases girl. Girl succumbs. In Younger’s version\, there is a sense of agency and exploration. Younger creates a mesmerizing atmosphere. In the second half of the track we are met with a delicate dance between Joel Ross on vibraphone and Younger on harp\, the two instruments pining through the melody. \nBrand New Life is part of her steadfast efforts to amplify the contributions of black women harpists and to keep their legacies alive. Her care for and attention to Dorothy Ashby as a musical ancestor has been consistent throughout her career. Akin to the popular hashtag\, #CiteBlackWomen\, which demands that consumers credit and recognize black women for their intellectual labor\, Younger urges us to recognize Ashby’s contribution to the American songbook. The album is part of a larger project of recognizing not only the history of innovators of distinguished harp – a history that places Ashby and Younger together on a continuum – but also the presence of everyday black women. \n“Running Game” was an obscure seven-inch single release originally entitled “Double Talkin’” and featured Ashby on piano. In the song’s intro\, we hear what sounds like a casual conversation at a black women’s beauty salon or at a social gathering of sorts where women freely share advice and observations on life with one another. The voices in the intro are of Younger’s mother and aunt. Younger sets up listeners by reading the lyrics from Ashby’s original. “Every man I meet is double talkin.’ Where did the good men go?” The women candidly respond to the song lyrics. One says\, “As far as game\, men have been running game since day one.” The track leads into\, “Running Game\,” a ballad with inflections of Negro spirituals and the blues. Here\, Younger’s expressivity on her instrument is incomparable. As the strings (arranged by DeSean Jones) hum behind her\, the “double-talking” gold-digging man comes into full view. “Running-Game” ends on a note of optimism\, of marching forward despite life’s struggle. \nYounger was born and raised in Hempstead\, New York. As a teen in the early 1990s\, she bopped to the beats of artists like LL Cool J\, Queen Latifah\, and Busta Rhymes. Among these hip hop greats\, she discovered Ashby’s music by way of hip hop legend Pete Rock. She began playing harp at the age of eleven and eventually enrolled at the Hartt School of Music at the University of Hartford in Connecticut where she studied classical music. It was through the encouragement of legendary saxophonist Jackie McLean that she made her first foray into jazz with the harp. \nHearing Ashby for the first time led her to envision new possibilities for herself as a harpist. “She was covering all of these popular tunes and soundtracks [of the time] and I wanted to do that. She’s playing pop\, jazz and everyone’s sampling her–DJ Premier\, Pete Rock\, J. Dilla. Hearing\, then seeing her as a Black Woman\, while I’m this random little isolated black girl playing a harp by myself was everything to me.” Younger forged her way with a small but mighty group of black women harpists as examples—Sarah Lawrence from her hometown\, Ann Hobson-Pilot\, Dorothy Ashby\, and Alice Coltrane—who were consistent sources of inspiration. \nIn 2006\, after graduating from the Hartt School\, Younger went on to develop a name for herself on the jazz and commercial recording scene in New York City. To date\, her performance roster is fierce. As a side-woman\, she has played alongside jazz icons such as Pharoah Sanders\, Ravi Coltrane\, Jack DeJohnette and Reggie Workman. Younger’s commitment to carrying the torch can also be seen through her work as a performer and educator. In 2008\, she earned a Master of Music from New York University’s Steinhardt School. During this time\, she began to work seriously as an educator. She has been guest faculty and lecturer at numerous universities including but not limited to Berklee College of Music\, Princeton University\, Howard University and Tulane University. Currently\, she serves as teaching artist faculty at New York University and The New School. \nIn 2020\, Younger was named winner of the DownBeat Critics Poll in the category of “Rising Star” harpist. Her work as side-woman is evidence of Younger’s undeniable presence in the sound of contemporary jazz today. In recent years\, she has appeared on albums by Lakecia Benjamin\, Robert Glasper\, Jeremy Pelt\, The Baylor Project and Makaya McCraven\, just to name a few. In addition to her contributions as a side-woman\, Younger’s commitment to honoring the legacy of black women harpists can be seen through her curatorial work. She has curated a number of performances dedicated to honoring the work of Dorothy Ashby and Alice Coltrane. This work speaks to her dedication as a purveyor of black music and history.

A powerful lyricist whose songs of compassionate dissent reflect her lived experience as what she lightheartedly calls “the poster-child for intersectionality\,” Justin Hiltner of Bluegrass Situation called Matthews’s gift “a reminder of what beauty can occur when we bridge those divides.” A former drum major and classically-trained clarinetist turned folk singer\, Matthews is using her voice to answer Dr. Martin Luther King’s call to be “a drum major for justice.” Crys Matthews’s thoughtful\, realistic and emotional songs speak to the voice of our generation and remind us why music indeed soothes the soul. \nThe show is at 7:30 pm with doors opening at 7 pm. SUMMARY:Larry & Joe
DESCRIPTION:The Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nSaturday\, September 2\, 2023\nDoors at 7 pm | Show at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $20 \nPURCHASE TICKETS NOW \nLarry & Joe is the duo of Joropo maestro Larry Bellorín (Monagas\, Venezuela) and GRAMMY-nominated bluegrass and oldtime star Joe Troop (Winston-Salem\, North Carolina). These two virtuosic multi-instrumentalists fuse their respective Venezuelan and Appalachian folk traditions on the harp\, banjo\, cuatro\, fiddle\, upright bass\, guitar\, and maracas to prove that music has no borders. Their bilingual (esp / eng) program includes storytelling\, humor\, and singalongs. \nFULL BIO \nENGLISH \nLarry & Joe were destined to make music together. \nLarry Bellorín hails from Monagas\, Venezuela and is a legend of Llanera music. Joe Troop is from North Carolina and is a GRAMMY-nominated bluegrass and oldtime musician. Larry was forced into exile and is an asylum seeker in North Carolina. Joe\, after a decade in South America\, got stranded back in his stomping grounds in the pandemic. Larry worked construction to make ends meet. Joe’s acclaimed “latingrass” band Che Apalache was forced into hiatus\, and he shifted into action working with asylum seeking migrants. Then Larry met Joe. \nCurrently based in the Triangle of North Carolina\, both men are versatile multi-instrumentalists and singer-songwriters on a mission to show that music has no borders. As a duo they perform a fusion of Venezuelan and Appalachian folk music on harp\, banjo\, cuatro\, fiddle\, maracas\, guitar\, upright bass\, and whatever else they decide to throw in the van. The program they offer features a distinct blend of their musical inheritances and traditions as well as storytelling about the ways that music and social movements coalesce. \nSPANISH \nLarry & Joe estaban destinados a hacer música juntos. Entonces Larry conoció a Joe.

SUMMARY:“But Then\, Suddenly\, I Was Looking From the Inside Out”
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents “But Then\, Suddenly\, I Was Looking From the Inside Out” by Coe Lapossy on the East Pop-Out Walls.\n \nThe East Pop-Out Walls at Crosstown Arts\nOn view through Sunday\, January 21\, 2024\nTickets: Free and open to the public \nThe first time Coe Lapossy heard someone talk about compartmentalizing their life\, so they could make all the separate and demanding things work together\, theyI were a kid watching a television interview with Jodie Foster. It was the typical interview question\, “How do you handle such a busy life? How do you accomplish all this?” Foster very nonchalantly explained that she just compartmentalizes everything. Lapossy remembers realizing that this was a completely unfamiliar way of being. They did not understand what Jodie was talking about\, and they did not believe they could live that way. But Then\, Suddenly\, I Was Looking From the Inside Out is about “no compartments.” Everything is mashing together in life all the time — and while Lapossy longs for stability and order — it’s all happening at once and they love how that feels — what that allows for. Not to be confused with multitasking\, this is a kind of nurtured chaos. \nThrough a resistance to the tenants of modernism\, Coe Lapossy centers erased histories and marginalized labor. They create work that revels in the subversive\, how it sneaks in and makes change\, how it works undetected because it must. They revisit artifacts of queerness wedged within a seemingly straight world\, choosing these references\, linking narratives from various times throughout history\, things forgotten\, erased\, messages that “flew under the radar.” With the reuse of these artifacts they create a meditation on what bodies we value\, how we memorialize\, and what/who survives under the conditions we create.

SUMMARY:“Days”
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents “Days” by Noah Thomas Miller in the East Gallery\, South Pop-Out Wall\, and Art Bar Bar Top.\n \nThe East Gallery\, South Pop-Out Wall\, and Art Bar Bar Top at Crosstown Arts\nOn view through Sunday\, January 21\, 2024\nTickets: Free and open to the public \nDays follows the everyday observations of the structures we interact with. The houses become more than just a residence\, but become individuals themselves. The shadows start to blur the line of where the walls stop and where a presence might begin. \nHave you ever touched a door knob and thought it felt like shaking someone’s hand? Instead of treating it like a utilitarian tool? \nOne can start to feel their identity fuse with the walls around them day after day. This new presence\, which we often call “home”\, silently witnesses all of our joys and sorrows\, and the passage of time. They are the only ones who have a deep understanding of our solitude and shared narratives. \nThese pieces are carved wood\, masked in layers of house paint\, and nailed together in a similar fashion as the places that house them. This is done to connect the viewer to the physicality and craftsmanship inherent in the creation of homes. \nNoah Thomas Miller is Illinois-born but finds his home in Memphis. He works in multivalent mediums\, whether that be woodworking\, film\, sound installation\, or a combination of materials\, to preserve memory and tell stories. \nHis work is constantly deconstructing and reconstructing a scene to find its essence. It’s easier to recall a feeling than the details of an image. One can find that in most of his work — stripping the image of detail (or color) and isolating the tone of a scene to tell the narrative itself. \nHe attended Memphis College of Art and has continued his practice through work with museums\, film programs\, art institutions\, and most importantly at home.
