SUMMARY:Crosstown Arts presents Sound Journey: Mike Tamburo and Sean Murphy
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Sound Journey: Mike Tamburo and Sean Murphy \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nSunday\, October 27\, 2024\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $25 in advance | $25 at the door \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nMike Tamburo is a world-renowned musician\, composer\, artist and educator. He is known and loved for his transformational live concerts performed on his personally curated set of gongs\, bells and other metal instruments. \nA lifelong multi-instrumentalist\, Tamburo has focused his talents on metal percussion instruments\, string instruments (hammered dulcimer\, guitar\, zither\, shahi baaja)\, as well as electronic instruments (synths\, looping). \nAn early adoptee of meditation\, Tamburo’s music offers space for journeying\, self-exploration and deep introspection. During many of his early performances\, he experienced altered states of consciousness and out of body experiences. To understand these experiences\, he explored kundalini yoga\, energy work\, the therapeutic use of sound and how sound impacts consciousness\, human perception and self healing. His love for long sustained drones\, overtones and psychoacoustics continues to inspire him to explore music in further directions. \nTamburo is also an interdisciplinary sound artist\, instrument builder\, video artist\, sound therapist\, writer and meditation teacher. \nSean Murphy is a multidisciplinary artist living in Memphis\, Tennessee. He is a musician\, ethnomusicologist\, instrument maker\, sound healer\, teaching artist\, nature lover\, listener\, and explorer. \nEarly in his career\, he began performing as a solo improvisation musician accompanying dance and yoga which eventually led him to the practice of sound healing. Sean and his wife\, Anne J. Froning\, have led workshops in restorative yoga & meditative movement with music throughout the United States. \nAs a performing and recording musician\, Sean has delved into nearly every genre into which music has ever been categorized! From classical to hip hop\, world to ambient\, jazz to hard rock\, new age to jazz\, he is equally at home. He is the leader of the Mighty Souls Brass Band as well as regularly playing as a sideman with many jazz groups while also regularly performing improvised music for dance\, healing\, and yoga. He also has many recording credits to his name as a soloist\, bandleader\, and sideman. He has also been fortunate enough to perform with many world-renowned musicians and bands including Dr. John\, Paul Winter\, William Eaton\, the Meters\, Galactic\, Clyde Stubblefield\, Rufus Thomas\, Robert Randolph & the Family Band\, & Mike Tamburo to name a few. \nSean currently splits his time between performing and recording as a solo artist\, presenting healing arts experiences with yoga/dance and live music (often in collaboration with Anne)\, leading the Mighty Souls Brass Band\, building functional art in the form of musical instruments\, and spending as much time with his granddaughters as possible!

SUMMARY:Alex Greene and the Rolling Head Orchestra - Live Score for "Haxan"
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents the Alex Greene and the Rolling Head Orchestra – Live Score for “Haxan” in The Green Room. \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nWednesday\, October 30\, 2024\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $20 \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \n\nSince 2019\, Alex Greene and the Rolling Head Orchestra have performed several of Greene’s original scores for silent films before live audiences. In 2022\, Greene was commissioned by the Indie Memphis Film Festival to compose an original score for the masterpiece of the Swedish silent era\, Häxan\, in honor of the film’s centennial\, and it was a smashing success\, receiving a standing ovation. Now\, on Wednesday\, October 30th\, at 7:30 p.m. \, The Green Room at Crosstown Arts will host a reprise performance of Greene’s Häxan score by the RHO as the film unfolds before the audience.\n\n\n\nBilled as a “documentary” about the history of witchcraft\, Häxan recreates supposed rituals and practices of demonized witches in lurid detail\, often by way of exquisite art direction and cinematography. A monumental production for its time\, the historical scenarios it spins take us right up to the modern clinical age. Taking you along for the ride are Greene and his band of players\, matching every mood\, from ecstasy to terror\, with a haunting melody and beat.\n\n\n\nSession keyboardist and composer Alex Greene (Reigning Sound\, Big Ass Truck\, the Kropotkins\, Deepstaria Enigmatica) has four decades of experience in Memphis and New York\, and has performed and recorded albums and soundtracks with the Rolling Head Orchestra since 2009. Whether he’s in singer/songwriter mode or leading a jazz band\, his compositions combine strong melodic lines with unexpected\, shape-shifting harmonies. With themes worthy of the Golden Age of Hollywood\, mixed with more modernist sounds\, and echoing artists as diverse as Thelonious Monk\, Duke Ellington\, and Sun Ra\, the classic jazz sextet of the Rolling Head Orchestra is now augmented by the eerie wail of the theremin.\n\n\n\nIn 2010\, the Rolling Head Orchestra scored the WKNO documentary Citizens Not Subjects: Reawakening Democracy in Memphis\, leading to the album Depression Jubilee. An album of Greene’s songs\, American Elegy\, was released in 2018. The group has gone on to perform original scores for silent films since 2019 (when Greene was a Resident Composer at Crosstown Arts)\, including soundtracks for A Trip to the Moon\, Aelita\, Queen of Mars\, Buster Keaton’s The Cameraman\, and Flesh and the Devil with Greta Garbo\, at venues as diverse as Crosstown Theater\, Germantown Performing Arts Center\, and Playhouse on the Square.

SUMMARY:Kafé Kirk: Kirk Whalum\, Kevin Whalum & Alonzo Bodden
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Kafé Kirk with Kirk Whalum and special guests Kevin Whalum and Alonzo Bodden in Crosstown Theater. \nThursday\, December 12\, 2024\nCrosstown Theater\nDoors open at 6:00 pm | Show begins at 6:30 pm\nTickets: General Admission $69 (plus fees) \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nJoin Grammy-winning saxophonist Kirk Whalum for Kafé Kirk\, an ongoing jazz series in Crosstown Theater featuring musical and spiritual collaborations with special guest artists. This very special performance will Kevin Whalum and Alonzo Bodden.\n\nKEVIN WHALUM\nKevin Whale\, a 35-year entertainment veteran from Memphis\, is a preacher\, published writer\, and motivational speaker. His music has been featured on Sirius/XM Radio\, and he has appeared on several of his brother Kirk’s albums. As a solo artist\, Kevin has released two albums\, Timetable and One Life to Love. He has also been a dedicated educator and performer at the Nashville Jazz Workshop\, where he participated in the acclaimed “Jazz On The Move” series\, presenting the life and music of jazz legends Nat King Cole and Billy Strayhorn.\n\nALONZO BODDEN\nA regular panel member on NPR’s Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me\, Alonzo Bodden has been making audiences around the country laugh for more than 20 years. Alonzo’s latest (2022) comedy special Alonzo Bodden: Stupid Don’t Get Tired\, was released on YouTube by Helium Comedy Studios. In 2019\, he starred in his fourth stand-up special\, Alonzo Bodden: Heavy Lightweight\, which premiered exclusively on Amazon Prime Video.\n\nKIRK WHALUM\nSoulful\, passionate\, stirring…these are the words most often used to describe Kirk’s music. Forged from his Memphis\, Tennessee\, gospel roots and his 1980s initiation into the thriving Houston\, TX nightclub scene\, Kirk’s big\, rich tenor sound is unmistakably his. The ’80s were highlighted by Kirk’s stepping out of his blossoming sideman role and forming his own band. It was there that Kirk ultimately developed both his “voice” and songwriting in the crucible of the local club scene—especially at a rooftop club called Cody’s. It was also in Houston where jazz pianist Bob James “discovered” him and brought him on tour\, which led to five successful albums with Columbia Records\, including Cache\, Kirk’s first #1 album.

SUMMARY:Mark Edgar Stuart & The BlueShift Ensemble 3rd Annual X-mas Show
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Mark Edgar Stuart & The Blueshift Ensemble 3rd Annual X-mas show in The Green Room\nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nWednesday\, December 18\, 2024\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $16\nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE\nMark Edgar Stuart comes back with the Christmas Concert! The tradition started three years ago with the Blueshift Ensemble. This year Stuart presents special guests Savannah Brister\, Calvin Barnes\, & Alexis Grace.\nMark Edgar Stuart\nYou’ll have a tough time finding a more widely-embraced modern singer-songwriter in Memphis — Stuart’s enthusiasm about his adopted hometown and what it has to offer is magnetic\, and his songs will stick with you. Grammy-winning music writer/director Robert Gordon is a big fan\, often spinning Mark’s tracks on his weekly radio show\, and other critics agree: “His acerbic wit is reminiscent of John Prine and Randy Newman” (No Depression); “His wry\, cutting view of the world makes something old new again” (Paste); “Always maintaining a tender demeanor\, his songwriting is smart as it is sincere” (Pop Matters). Mark’s stories are sweet but never saccharine\, even-keeled but deeply affecting. He’s lovable and literary\, smart yet plain-spoken\, heartening\, funny\, and always memorable. He sounds new and familiar\, fresh yet timeless. His songs sound like your favorite stories\, retold by a friend.\n\nBlueshift Ensemble\n\nBlueshift Ensemble is a Memphis-based contemporary chamber music ensemble dedicated to bringing artists and audiences together through artistic collaboration. By programming both new and existing classical repertoire alongside multi-genre collaborations\, Blueshift aims to connect a wider audience to today’s classical music. The ensemble draws upon Memphis’s uniquely diverse musical heritage by combining classical music with popular music genres such as rock\, blues\, and soul and collaborating with local musicians\, visual artists\, and composers.

SUMMARY:Event Rescheduled: Artist Talks with Lester Merriweather & Alex Paulus
DESCRIPTION:Due to inclement weather\, the Artist Talks on January 11 are now rescheduled for Thursday\, January 16 from 6-8 PM. Apologies for the late notice—this decision was made after our newsletter was sent. We hope you can join us for an evening of art and conversation. \nThe Galleries at Crosstown Arts\nFree and open to the public \nANA•LOG – Lester Merriweather \nFourteen Pics is a cumulative project referencing several continuing bodies of work by Lester Julian Merriweather examining the concept of agency over Black Visualization within American Popular Culture. The works in ANA•LOG draw upon several sources: They take direct visual inspiration from the compositions of the 1982-88 Basquiat-Warhol Collaborations. ANA•LOG’s methodology invokes the long-rumored Dr. Dre concept album The Planets. The gestural treatment of the layered and excavated surfaces in ANA•LOG pays homage to the experimental processes of the mid-60s Developer tool works by the late Jack Whitten. Language is key to the works included in ANA•LOG. In breaking down its linguistic aspects\, Merriweather examined varied forms of the word Analog\, defined as “not computerized”; Analog is a counter-cultural delineation that separates itself from the “Digital”. The individually collaged-by-hand elemental “units” in ANA•LOG act in a fashion similar to pixels in the Digital space. Referencing Memphis slang\, “Ana” is a shortened form of “Animosity”. “Log” in this instance serves as a “Recorded History”. ANA•LOG essentially serves as a “Record of Remembered Angers” obtained through oft repeated racial disparities within American Visual culture. \nSize Matters – Alex Paulus\nI’ve been thinking about scale and proportion a lot lately. The size of an object can make it seem important or unimportant. And we all measure things according to the size of ourselves. Things that are smaller than us can seem trivial\, while larger objects can feel overwhelming. Yet\, when considering the vastness of the universe\, our planet seems tiny and inconsequential.\nMy current series focuses on the juxtaposition of small figures within expansive landscapes\, alongside large-scale portraits depicting figures of profound personal meaning from my childhood. The pieces involving small figures in massive spaces\, create a sense of insignificance. The large portraits give off a sense of immense importance. But this is all relative to the size of the viewer and how it makes them feel.\nI often think about how humans fit into this world and how small we actually are compared to the rest of the universe. I am very interested in the purpose of human existence\, but it seems like we do a lot of weird things for no reason. And I’d like to learn as much as I can with my time here on Earth.

DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Say It Loud: The Overlook Quartet in The Green Room \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nThursday\, January 16\, 2025\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: pay what you wish! \nPAY WHAT YOU WISH \nMonica Davis\, violin\nRavenna Lipchik\, violin\nAngela Pickett\, viola\nLaura Metcalf\, cello \nThe “breathtaking\,” “paradigm-shifting” (New York Music Daily) string quartet The Overlook is a unifying\, community-building force\, whose dedication to a more representative musical tradition reverberates throughout their industry. \nThe Overlook formed from a simple need to make and share music with others during the pandemic shutdown. The longtime friends\, some of New York’s most accomplished string players\, gathered to play outdoors in parks and on street corners in upper Manhattan\, and their community stopped to listen. Through these casual outdoor performances\, they built a following in person and on social media\, connected with local businesses and residential enclaves\, and partnered with important neighborhood cultural centers for their first official performances. They witnessed firsthand the power of music to unite and inspire – all without playing a single note of the string quartet repertoire that has been held up as “standard” for hundreds of years. \nSince their inception in June 2020\, The Overlook has worked to effect permanent change in the “classical music canon” by developing a body of repertoire composed by BIPOC\, female\, and non-binary creators. The quartet has presented masterworks from the past by Florence Price\, Samuel-Coleridge-Taylor\, and Chevalier de Saint-Georges\, as well as works by living composers Trevor Weston\, Eleanor Alberga\, Carlos Simon\, Jessie Montgomery\, Shelley Washington\, Leila Adu\, Forbes Graham\, and many more. The Overlook has enjoyed collaborating with such artists as New York Philharmonic principal clarinetist Anthony McGill\, Wilco guitarist Nels Cline\, multi-Grammy nominee Curtis Stewart\, and noted visual artist Linda Sormin. To support their work\, the quartet has been awarded grants by the Eastman School of Music\, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council\, Bronx Council on the Arts and Local 802’s Music Performance Trust Fund. \nThe Overlook has developed and presented a new performance series “If the Stars Align” in Uptown-NYC\, with concerts at Washington Heights/Inwood cultural institutions including Hispanic Society of America\, Morris-Jumel Mansion\, Dyckman Farmhouse Museum\, Fort Washington Collegiate Church\, and United Palace Theatre. The quartet recently brought their mission to Lincoln Center at Kaufman Music Center’s “Musical Storefronts”\, Chamber Music NY at Bruno Walter Auditorium\, GatherNYC at the Museum of Arts and Design\, Symphony Space\, Fotografiska New York\, and Wave Hill. Further afield\, the quartet has performed at Chatter ABQ\, WOCO Fest\, The Arts Club of DC\, Music for Montauk\, Mass MoCA\, LeHigh University\, Tuckamore Festival in NL\, Canada\, as well as in a virtual performance presented by the Metropolitan Museum of Art that has been streamed nearly 70\,000 times. \nBy building relationships with composers and championing new works\, collaborating with interdisciplinary creators\, re-thinking the concert experience to include non-traditional spaces\, and consistently engaging with their Uptown NYC community\, The Overlook upholds its mission to create a more representative and relevant musical practice.

SUMMARY:Elizabeth Wise & Her Guys in The Green Room
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Elizabeth Wise & Her Guys in The Green Room \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nFriday\, Jan 24\, 2025\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $20 in advance | $25 at the door \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \n“I’ve been all over the world/I’ve seen almost everything/I’ve sung all kinds of places/People call me the queen.” That’s the start of the middle verse from the modern blues standard “Mississippi Woman\,” a gritty song that’s been handed up and down the muddy banks of the mighty river that bears its name and passed along like a secret from the hills of Holly Springs to the juke joints of Memphis and into the hands of Elizabeth Wise\, a folk singer\, guitarist\, and ceramicist who possesses what they used to call an old soul. With a slide in her left hand and conviction in her voice\, Wise inhabits the lines that come next\, delivering them as a mystical incantation and a purposeful statement of fact. “No matter where I go y’all/I give them something real/People all over the world/Need that Mississippi feel.” \nThe Memphis band with songwriting collaborator Bob Buckley and Memphis legends Jim Spake and Tom Lonardo is always a fresh spin on the Wise and Wise/Buckley originals and arrangements of covers.
