SUMMARY:Wellness January: Free Film Screening - McFarland USA
DESCRIPTION:As part of Wellness January\, find a little inspiration with a free film screening in the Crosstown Arts Theater. \nMcFarland\, USA\n  \nInspired by the 1987 true story\, “McFarland\, USA” follows novice runners from McFarland\, an economically challenged town in California’s farm-rich Central Valley\, as they give their all to build a cross-country team under the direction of Coach Jim White (Kevin Costner)\, a newcomer to their predominantly Latino high school. Coach White and the McFarland students have a lot to learn about each other but when White starts to realize the boys’ exceptional running ability\, things begin to change. Soon something beyond their physical gifts becomes apparent—the power of family relationships\, their unwavering commitment to one another and their incredible work ethic. With grit and determination\, the unlikely band of runners eventually overcomes the odds to forge not only a championship cross-country team but an enduring legacy as well. Along the way\, Coach White realizes that his family finally found a place to call home and both he and his team achieve their own kind of American dream. \nRating: PG \nRun time: 2 hrs 9 min \n \nWellness January\nEach Saturday features: \n\n11 AM: Free fitness class in the Central Atrium\n12 PM: Lunch break with healthy specials at Global Café\, Farm Burger Memphis\, Juice Joint\, and Mad Grocer (mention the Wellness Offer!)\n1 PM: Nutrition presentation from the Church Health Nutrition Hub\n1:30 PM: Free film screening in the Crosstown Arts Theater

SUMMARY:Crosstown Arts FIlm Series Presents: "All Is Lost"
DESCRIPTION:Nearly wordless and stripped to its bare essentials\, All Is Lost is a masterclass in cinematic restraint. Robert Redford delivers one of the most physically and emotionally demanding performances of his career as a lone sailor battling a relentless cascade of failures after his yacht is damaged in the open Indian Ocean. With almost no dialogue and no backstory to lean on\, the film forces the audience into an intimate confrontation with vulnerability\, perseverance\, and mortality. \nDirector J.C. Chandor turns the vastness of the sea into both setting and antagonist\, crafting a tense\, immersive experience where every small decision carries life-or-death weight. All Is Lost is not just a survival story\, but a quiet meditation on aging\, isolation\, and what remains when modern comforts and distractions are stripped away. Seeing it on the big screen heightens its elemental power and serves as a reminder of cinema’s ability to communicate through image\, sound\, and human presence alone.

SUMMARY:An Evening with Amy Rigby: Live Music & Book Signing
DESCRIPTION:Burke’s Book Store presents an evening with singer-songwriter Amy Rigby\, Tuesday\, January 27th at 6:00 p.m. at the Memphis Listening Lab. Amy Rigby will be discussing and signing copies of her new book\, Girl to Country: a Memoir (Southern Domestic\, $18 paperback) and will give a short performance. \nBroken-down vehicles. Premenopausal libido. A punk rock-loving teen to share the culture shock with. I don’t think Hank done it this way. A few years after her 1996 breakthrough album Diary Of A Mod Housewife\, singer/songwriter Amy Rigby is still figuring out who she is. Closing in on forty\, a newly-divorced mom trying to tour\, work temp jobs\, and keep a car running\, Amy is ready for a change. She trades her beloved NYC for Nashville\, where she navigates music\, men and motherhood to learn the hard way that outside validation is no substitute for self-belief. \nGirl To Country details what happens after the coming of age and first flash of achievement. Following on from her acclaimed debut memoir Girl To City\, where Amy fumbled her way to becoming an artist in late twentieth century NYC\, Girl To Country depicts the tricky second act of a creative life: how do you keep doing the work you love into your forties and beyond in a game everyone told you was only for the young? What’s the price for juggling parenthood with fulfilling your dreams? And how about love-will it knock you off balance or help you keep going? From one of America’s enduring underground artists known for her honest\, kinetic songwriting\, Girl To Country is a touching\, clear-eyed journey full of unexpected detours. \nAmy Rigby has established herself as one of America’s enduring underground/cult/indie artists\, combining the insight and humor of country and folk songwriting with classic rock craftsmanship and punk DIY spirit. She started bands Last Roundup and the Shams in NYC’s East Village before launching a solo career with her 1996 classic album Diary Of A Mod Housewife. Her most recent album Hang In There With Me (Tapete\, 2024) was called “an absolute masterpiece\, a career best” in Louder Than War. \n“Singer-songwriter…doesn’t fully describe Rigby’s immense gifts and her devotion to the kind of pop and rock music that singer-songwriters often neglect\,” wrote the Nashville Scene. A storyteller both on stage and on the page\, Rigby has toured internationally for years and is the author of two memoirs: Girl To City (2019) and her latest Girl To Country (2025).

SUMMARY:POSTPONED: Crosstown Arts Film Series Presents: "No Country For Old Men"
DESCRIPTION:The Coen Brothers’ Academy Award–winning adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s novel stands as one of the most unsettling American films of the 21st century. Set against the bleak landscapes of West Texas\, No Country for Old Men follows intersecting lives pulled into a spiral of violence after a drug deal goes wrong\, along with the unstoppable force that follows in its wake. \nAnchored by Javier Bardem’s chilling portrayal of Anton Chigurh\, the film explores fate\, chance\, and moral erosion with an almost mythic inevitability. Sparse dialogue\, oppressive silence\, and sudden brutality create an atmosphere of constant dread. Sheriff Ed Tom Bell’s weary reflections frame the film as a lament for a world that no longer makes sense to those who once believed they understood it. Grim\, precise\, and hauntingly modern\, No Country for Old Men demands the focus and scale of a theatrical viewing.

SUMMARY:POSTPONED: “Memphis R&B Is Not Dead” with Trinity Adair & Phillip Bond
DESCRIPTION:“Memphis R&B Is Not Dead” with Trinity Adair & Phillip Bond \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts \nSaturday\, January 31\, 2025 \nDoors open at 7 PM | Show starts at 7:30 PM \n$20 in advance (plus fees) | $25 at the door \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nIn early 2025\, online discourse reignited a long-standing conversation about the state of the Memphis R&B scene—and\, more broadly\, the misconception that Memphis music exists in only one lane. The truth is far richer: Memphis is home to a dynamic spectrum of sound\, from alternative to traditional genres\, each brimming with artistry\, identity\, and cultural weight. For those who claim they can only hear one genre\, they simply aren’t listening closely enough. This collaboration between Trinity Adair and Phillip Bond aims to change that. \nTrinity Adair is a Nashville-raised singer-songwriter and recent University of Memphis Music Business graduate whose Memphis journey has been defined by passion\, curiosity\, and community. Trinity has already left her mark on the city—hosting the weekly radio show For the Gworlz on 91.7 FM WYXR\, collaborating with a diverse roster of local artists\, and contributing her talents to the historic Overton Park Shell. \nPhillip Bond is a 29-year-old Tennessee native. Born in Jackson and raised in Memphis\, his roots bleed music\, imagination\, and authenticity. From performing at a young age in church and in choirs to performing as a background singer for Kristen Chenoweth\, Phillip knows that music is what he was destined for. While he was studying at the University of Memphis\, he went on to perform in multiple choir groups\, feature in Pentatonix’s music video for “O Come\, All Ye Faithful”\, opened for K Michelle and Jeremiah\, and sang with American soprano\, Angela Brown. \nThis show doesn’t just entertain; it proves a point: Memphis music is alive\, expansive\, and more diverse than ever.

SUMMARY:Crosstown Arts Film Series Presents: “Macbeth”
DESCRIPTION:Roman Polanski’s Macbeth is one of the most brutal and unflinching adaptations of Shakespeare’s tragedy ever put to film. Made in the shadow of personal trauma\, the film strips away romanticism and presents a raw\, blood-soaked vision of ambition\, paranoia\, and moral collapse. This is a medieval world defined by mud\, steel\, and violence\, where power is seized through cruelty and maintained through fear. \nPolanski emphasizes the physical reality of the play’s horrors\, rendering the supernatural elements as ominous rather than theatrical\, and grounding the story in an atmosphere of relentless dread. Jon Finch’s Macbeth is volatile and increasingly unhinged\, while Francesca Annis’s Lady Macbeth radiates cold resolve beneath a fragile surface. The result is a haunting\, deeply unsettling interpretation that treats Macbeth not as elevated literature\, but as a savage study of how unchecked ambition corrodes the human soul.
