SUMMARY:Garrison Starr: Eighteen Over Me 25th Anniversary Tour
DESCRIPTION:Doors 6:30pm / Show 7:30pm \nTickets: $25 advance / $30 day of the show / $75 VIP \nCrosstown Arts presents Garrison Starr at Crosstown Theater\, celebrating the 25th anniversary of her major label debut LP Eighteen Over Me. \n“One of the strongest voices in town… the author of affecting\, emotion-bearing songs that are clothed in attractive\, melodic garb” — Billboard \n“An unmistakable songwriting talent” — PopMatters \n“Incredible singer and songwriter and one of the brightest talents that music has ever seen” — Margaret Cho \n“Writes and sings her heart out. In the ‘American Idol’-ized landscape that constitutes today’s music business\, she is someone to be thankful for” — Mary Chapin Carpenter \nAfter two milestone-laden decades in music\, Garrison Starr is going back to where it all began to celebrate the 25th anniversary of her major label debut LP Eighteen Over Me with a tour and a highlighted show in Memphis\, TN at the legendary Crosstown Theater\, where she will be performing the record in it’s entirety and recording that performance to release as a live LP later this year. \nOriginally hailing from Hernando\, MS\, Garrison released her major label debut\, Eighteen Over Me\, in 1997 for Geffen Records. The album was critically acclaimed and is still loved by its fans. Starr made her home in the Memphis music scene in the mid-90s\, working at famed Ardent Studios and playing shows every chance she got. Her triumphant song “Superhero” caught the attention of A&R rep Ray Farrell\, and she signed a deal in 1996. The majority of the record was written within the year\, and was released in Sept. of 97’. Starr notes her favorite touring experiences from back in those days were with The Sundays soon after the record’s release and playing Lilith Fair\, where she met some of her heroes and future collaborators: Mary Chapin Carpenter\, The Indigo Girls\, Bonnie Raitt and Sara Maclachlan. \nSince then\, she’s toured the world and back\, she’s received a GRAMMY nomination\, has had her songs placed in hundreds of movies\, TV shows and commercials\, was featured in a 2022 Super Bowl commercial for T-Mobile staring Dolly Parton and Miley Cyrus and has released a dozen albums while also writing songs for others such as Back Street Boys and Kris Allen. \nBut there’s nothing quite like your first LP. No matter what else you accomplish\, there’s always something special about the first thing you present to the world. And that’s something to celebrate. \nAbout Garrison Starr: \nGarrison Starr is the quintessential musical triple-threat – singer\, songwriter\, record producer – and her latest album\, Girl I Used To Be\, reveals her at the height of all her powers. \nStarr is a celebrated singer of such remarkable reputation that music icons go out of their way to praise her. Glen Phillips declares\, “Garrison’s voice goes straight to the gut. She reminds you of what it means to be human.” Mary Chapin Carpenter adds\, “She just writes and sings her heart out. In the ‘American Idol’-ized landscape that constitutes today’s music business\, she is someone to be thankful for.” \nOf her songwriting\, Billboard Magazine describes Starr as “the author of affecting\, emotion-bearing songs that are clothed in attractive\, melodic garb.” That unique melodic sense is the foundation for Starr’s songwriting acclaim and why she’s found such success writing for TV\, commercials\, and film – where her songs have been featured numerous times. \nHer frequent collaborations with other artists have been both in the studio and on stage – Starr has toured with the likes of Steve Earle\, Emmylou Harris\, Bruce Cockburn\, Patty Griffin\, Mindy Smith\, and Melissa Etheridge (to name a few)\, logging hundreds of thousands of touring miles across the country and around the world. \nIn 2016\, Starr collaborated with Margaret Cho\, producing and performing on her Grammy-nominated album\, American Myth. Pulling no punches\, Cho paints Starr as “an incredible singer and songwriter and one of the brightest talents that music has ever seen. Artists like her come along once in a millennia\, and we are lucky to have her now.” \nMost recently\, Starr started a “supergroup” with Nashville songwriters Sean McConnell and Peter Groenwald to form My Sister My Brother\, who released their debut self-titled EP on March 6\, 2020. Rolling Stone called it “a gorgeous\, harmony-drenched [record] about partnership and purpose”.

SUMMARY:Circuit des Yeux at Crosstown Arts
DESCRIPTION:Doors 7pm / Show 7:30pm\nTickets $20 / At the door $25 plus fees \nHaley Fohr is a vocalist\, composer and singer-songwriter based in Chicago\, Illinois. Her musical endeavors focus around our human condition\, and her 10-year career as Circuit des Yeux has grown into one of America’s most successful efforts to connect the personal to the universal. \nShe is most distinctly identified by her 4-octave voice and unique style of 12-string guitar. Her mysterious “Jackie Lynn” project landed her on the cover of Wire Magazine in August of 2016. Her recent works include an Original Soundtrack for Charles Bryant’s silent film Salomé (1923)\, commissioned by Opera North\, and a critically acclaimed 2017 album Reaching For Indigo\, released on Drag City Records. \nCircuit des Yeux’s first studio album since 2017\, -io\, is her first for Matador Records. The sky over -io is Florida’s strange\, radiant orange. It’s a built environment\, unnatural\, made from concrete and glass\, with skyscrapers that stretch to the vanishing point as you gaze up at them. \nIt’s crumbling and suffocating\, a city perpetually on the brink of collapse\, where tension never topples over into catharsis\, where the heat never breaks. \nInside this world and its closed loop of time\, Fohr found herself able to begin moving again. “I was haunted by memories in the pandemic\,” she says. “As someone with PTSD\, memories are all twisted up inside of me in a way that doesn’t help my higher self. Making this album was once again an exercise of trying to relieve myself of some of that darkness in a way that music has always done for me.”

SUMMARY:Anika
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Anika\, the project of Berlin-based musician Annika Henderson\, in The Green Room. \nTICKETS: $15 in advance | $20 day of show \nDoors at 7 pm | Show at 7:30 pm \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAnika — the project of Berlin-based musician Annika Henderson\, who is also a founding member of Exploded View — announces Change\, her first new album in over a decade. Her video for “Change” was directed by Sven Gutjahr\, who also directed the video for her recent single\, “Finger Pies.” The follow-up to cult favorite Anika (2010)\, Change is beautifully fraught. The intimacy of its creation and a palpable sense of global anxiety are seemingly baked into the album’s DNA. Spread across nine tracks\, the central feeling of the record is one of heightened frustration buoyed by guarded optimism. The songs offer skittering\, austere electronic backdrops reminiscent of classic Broadcast records or Hi Scores-era Boards of Canada\, playing them against Anika’s remarkable voice — Nico-esque\, beautifully plaintive\, and — in regard to the record’s subject matter — totally resolute. \nHaving worked collaboratively in the past with the likes of BEAK> and Exploded View\, Change was ultimately the product of necessity. After recording the initial ideas by herself at Berlin’s Klangbild Studios\, Anika was joined by Exploded View’s Martin Thulin\, who co-produced the album and played some live drums and bass. “This album had been planned for a little while\, and the circumstances of its inception were quite different to what had been expected\,” says Anika. “This colored the album quite significantly. The lyrics were all written there on the spot. It’s a vomit of emotions\, anxieties\, empowerment\, and of thoughts like — How can this go on? How can we go on?” \nRecorded at a time when literally everyone in the world was being forced to take stock\, rethink\, and reimagine their own place in the cosmos of things\, Anika provides the wisened perspective of an outsider. It’s a perspective that is not lost on the British ex- pat and former political journalist\, and despite the subject matter and the circumstances around its creation\, Change itself is ultimately a treatise on optimism. The title track presents the album’s message writ large: “I think we can change. We all have things to learn\, about ourselves and about each other.” To end the record on such a sanguine note might be one of Change’s most revolutionary gestures. \n“There’s a lot of stuff I want to change\,” says Anika. “Some things I sat down and decided last year\, I had to change about myself and my life. Sometimes it feels helpless\, because the things we want to change are so huge and out of our control. Starting with yourself is always a good place. I think we can change.”

This effervescent\, sunlit silent\, about a handful of city dwellers (a charming cast of nonprofessionals) enjoying a weekend outing\, offers a rare glimpse of Weimar-era Berlin. A unique hybrid of documentary and fictional storytelling\, PEOPLE ON SUNDAY was both an experiment and a mainstream hit that would influence generations of film artists around the world. Presented with a live score from Kelvin Walters. Kelvin Walters is a brilliant saxophonist\, composer and band leader\, originally from Memphis\, TN and currently studying music at The Juilliard School in New York City. \nThe Crosstown Arthouse Film Series showcases a diverse collection of independent\, international\, historically significant\, artistic\, experimental\, cult\, underground and documentary features.

SUMMARY:Ed Gerhard
DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets Here \nCrosstown Arts presents acoustic guitarist Ed Gerhard in the Green Room. \nPerforming on 6-string\, 12-string\, slide guitar or Acoustic Hawaiian Lap Slide\, Gerhard captivates his audiences with virtuosity\, generosity and sly humor. Known for his gorgeous tone and compositional depth\, Gerhard can move a listener with a single note. Scott Alalrik of the Boston Globe said it best when he wrote ‘Gerhard does not write instrumentals. He writes songs only a guitar\ncan sing. \nGerhard’s relationship with the guitar began at age 10\, when he happened upon classical guitar master Andrés Segovia on TV. “I’d heard all the pop music on the radio and maybe a little of that 60’s folk stuff\, but this was the first time I’d ever heard the guitar all by itself and the sound just instantly got me\,” he remembers. Ed finally got his first guitar at 14. His initial interest in classical guitar changed dramatically when he heard the music of bluesman Mississippi John Hurt. He quit lessons after the third one. He took some informal lessons with friends and learned by ear\, slowing down LPs to half-speed to pick out the tricky parts. At fifteen\, Ed was already beginning to perform in local church basement coffeehouses\, playing solo and jamming with friends. \nIn 1977 Gerhard moved to New Hampshire where he has resided ever since. Joining a thriving folk and acoustic music scene proved invaluable for the young guitarist. “There seemed to be no limitation on places to play back then\, or more importantly\, what you could play” says Ed. “You could play anything you wanted as long as people stayed around and drank.” When Gerhard was not performing solo he could often be seen sitting in with other musicians. “I loved to play\, it didn’t matter if I was solo or sideman.” During this period Ed began composing and arranging music for solo guitar\, using a staggering array of alternative guitar tunings. \nBased truly on the quality of his work\, Ed built his considerable reputation\, beginning with his debut album “Night Birds” in 1987. It garnered a spot in the Boston Globe Critics Poll Top 10 Albums of the Year.” Shortly after the album’s release\, Windham Hill Records included Ed on its Guitar Sampler (Vol.1). One of the highlights of the three hundred thousand unit selling Sampler\, “The Handing Down” introduced the world to the beauty of Ed Gerhard’s music. “That one piece made me a lot of friends around the world\,” Ed says. \nEd has released his ninth CD “There and Gone.” He was awarded a GRAMMY® for his inclusion on the CD “Henry Mancini; Pink Guitar.” Warner Brothers\, MelBay and Hal Leonard have all released Ed Gerhard’s music in books. His guitar work can be heard on recordings by Arlo Guthrie\, Jorma Kaukonen\, Bill Morrissey and in the Ken Burns films “Mark Twain” and “ The National Parks: America’s Best Idea.” \nEd’s CD “Luna” is featured in Acoustic Guitar Magazine’s 20th Anniversary list of the “240 Essential Albums.” “This soulful album of original compositions rich in melody\, chordal complexity and stylistic variety proves why Gerhard is considered to have the most exquisite acoustic guitar tone on the planet.” -Acoustic Guitar Magazine \nAlong with players like Ben Harper and David Lindley\, Gerhard’s unique approach to the Weissenborn (an acoustic Hawaiian lap slide guitar) is playing a significant role in reinvigorating interest in this somewhat esoteric but beautiful instrument. Ed’s style of Weissenborn playing is unique in that he composes and arranges music for solo Weissenborn with beautiful melodies\, complex chords and moving basslines\, unusual for an instrument that normally serves an accompaniment role. Ed is featured in the book “Lap Steel Guitar” alongside legendary players like Greg Leisz\, David Lindley\, Jerry Byrd and more. \nIn a true collaboration of guitarist and guitar maker\, Breedlove Guitars released the “Ed Gerhard Signature Model” guitar. The guitar became one of Breedlove’s best selling guitars and won the “Player’s Choice Award” by Acoustic Guitar Magazine. Breedlove has released a Gerhard Weissenborn copy in collaboration with Gerhard. Here they have combined traditional design with innovative features and contemporary wood combinations. \nEd tours in the US\, Canada\, Europe\, Japan\, China and Korea.

Jazz belongs to the world\, it exists wherever we come from.” (Will Schube\, Passion of the Weiss)\n\nMcCraven has shared stages with artists such as Corey Wilkes\, Bobby (Baabe) Irving (MilesDavis)\, Ari Brown\, and Bernie Worrell and played in some of the world’s best clubs\, festivals and arenas. Yet despite the accolades and fervent touring\, McCraven’s focus remains on both creating music and moving the culture forward.\n\n“As a person of mixed race\, nationality\, and ethnicity I want my identity and contributions to paint a world not bound by genre\, race or national boundaries but unified through alove of music culture and community. Tethered by legacies of the past but looking towards a new\, more universal future.”\n\n\n\n\n\nMakaya McCraven continues the development of his “organic beat music” as well as the work of (what Schube described as) “transcending locale” on his most recent releaseUniversal Beings. Through these experiences she’s learning more and more each day about the demand this industry can have\, but if anyone is up for the challenge it’s Amber. She’s currently held title as Memphis Songwriters Associations Vice President for two years and Co-Hosts a songwriter showcase in Memphis each week called “Meet Me in Memphis” at South Main Sounds while working part-time as a visiting teacher with the Delta Arts since graduating Memphis College of art back in 2012 with a degree in Sculpture. Her latest releases are being recorded through Sound Kitchen Studios in Nashville by former White Heart guitarist and five-time Dove award winning producer\, Billy Smiley. When asked why she moved from Nashville to pursue her music in Memphis she says “for one I feel more creative here\, these are MY people and two\, well who’s the King of Memphis Blues? B.B. King. Who’s the king of Memphis Rock n’ Roll? Elvis Presley. Now who’s the queen of Memphis country? …Amber Rae Dunn!” and that’s exactly who she plans to be!

SUMMARY:Roseanna Vitro at Crosstown Arts
DESCRIPTION:Born Roseanna Elizabeth Vitro in Hot Springs\, Arkansas\, on February 28\, 1951\, Vitro began singing at an early age\, drawing inspiration from gospel\, rock\, rhythm and blues\, musical theatre\, and classical music. During the 1950s\, her father owned a night club in Hot Springs called The Flamingo. He loved Dean Martin‘s music and opera\, and her mother’s family sang gospel. By the 1960s\, she was determined to be a rock singer. \nVitro was exposed to jazz and it became her genre of choice after moving to Houston\, Texas in the 1970s. Ray Sullenger discovered Vitro and presented her to the Houston jazz community where she sang frequently with Arnett Cobb. She worked for two years at the Green Room in Houston with her group Roseanna with Strings and Things and hosted a radio show on KUHF-FM. The band performed with Oscar Peterson\, Bill Evans\, Tommy Flanagan\, and Keter Betts. Cobb\, Peterson\, and Sullenger encouraged her to dedicate herself to jazz. \nIn 1978\, she moved to New York City with guitarist Scott Hardy and began to study with Gabor Carelli\, a professor from the Manhattan School of Music\, and began to perform with Kenny Werner and Fred Hersch. She sang with Lionel Hampton and toured with him. She appeared at The Blue Note\, Iridium\, Birdland\, and Dizzy’s Jazz Club at Lincoln Center. She appeared with Steve Allen at The Town Hall at The Apollo Theater and recorded an album of Allen’s songs. In 2005 she performed and recorded with the Kenny Werner Trio at the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. \nShe has worked with Kenny Barron\, Christian McBride\, Elvin Jones\, Gary Bartz\, Kevin Mahogany\, and David “Fathead” Newman\, all of whom have appeared on her recordings. She was a guest on Marian McPartland’s radio program Piano Jazz. Her album The Music of Randy Newman received 4 1/2 stars in Down Beat magazine and a Grammy nomination for Best Jazz Vocal Album in 2012. \nVitro taught vocal jazz at the State University of New York at Purchase and retired in 2017 as Vocal Jazz Chair at New Jersey City University and New Jersey Performing Arts Center. She holds workshops\, concerts\, and master classes. She has studied classical voice\, ear-training\, classical Indian vocal technique\, Portuguese\, piano\, and jazz technique and concept. \n\nTickets Buy Tickets Here \nhttps://roseannavitrojazz.squarespace.com/media

SUMMARY:Nate Smith + KINFOLK
DESCRIPTION:Doors 6:30pm | Show 7:30pm\nTickets: $35; day of show $40\nBuy Tickets Here\n\n“On drums\, Nate Smith is in the business of inspiring. Far from flashy\, he’s an ebullient technician who keys into the subtleties of his bandmates’ playing and laces joie de vivre into his own.” – New York Times\n\n\n2x GRAMMY® Award-nominated drummer/composer/producer Nate Smith has announced the release of his inspired new album\, Kinfolk 2: See The Birds. The highly anticipated follow up to 2017’s GRAMMY® Award-nominated Kinfolk: Postcards From Everywhere arrives via Edition Records on Friday\, September 17; pre-orders are available now.\n\n\n\n\n\nTo herald the release of Kinfolk 2: See The Birds\, Smith is sharing the album’s first single\, the hip-hop centric “Square Wheel\,” which finds Smith juggling odd-meter beats in unison with rapper Kokayi’s intrepid rhythmic cadence along side singer Michael Mayo’s impassioned vocals as well as Brad Allen on guitar\, bassist Fima Ephron\, saxophonist Jaleel Shaw and Jon Cowherd on keys. A companion music video filmed in the recording studio is streaming on YouTube now.\n\n\n\n\n\nKinfolk 2: See the Birds affirms Nate Smith as one of the most dynamic drummers\, insightful composers\, and engaging bandleaders of his generation\, adept across infinite genres and multiple styles. The album sees Smith joined by an array of diverse fellow artists\, including singers Brittany Howard\, Amma Whatt\, legendary guitarist Vernon Reid\, violinist Regina Carter\, vibraphonist Joel Ross\, rapper Kokayi\, and\, Michael Mayo\, and Stokley Williams (of the pioneering R&B band Mint Condition).\n\n\n\n\n\nKinfolk 2: See the Birds marks the second installment in a remarkable trilogy charting Smith’s continuing evolution as a musician and composer. While Kinfolk: Postcards From Everywhere touched upon Smith’s childhood in Chesapeake\, VA\, and the sounds that he absorbed in his family home\, the new album offers an impressionistic portrait of the artist as a young man considering his future in music. Those years saw Smith inspired by the diverse and eclectic riches of Prince and Michael Jackson\, hip-hop and the emerging neo-soul movement\, as well as music associated with the groundbreaking Black Rock Coalition such as Living Colour (whose trailblazing founder\, Vernon Reid\, appears on the new album’s menacing “Rambo”).\n\n\n\n\n\nHowever\, Kinfolk 2 is no throwback – Smith reconciles his teenaged influences with the modern jazz sensibilities that he’s demonstrated with not just his solo material but as a sideman with such jazz titans as guitarist Pat Metheny\, bassist Dave Holland\, and saxophonists Ravi Coltrane and Chris Potter. Recorded mostly in two band sessions – June 2019 at Sear Sound in New York City and February 2020 at the Bunker Studio in Brooklyn – the album projects a dreamy\, cinematic sensibility as the music ebbs and flows from wistful downtempo excursions to rugged hip-hop beats\, hypnotic alt-rock leaning tunes to amorous laments. Kinfolk 2 boasts a slightly different lineup for its core ensemble than its predecessor. Saxophonist Jaleel Shaw and bassist Fima Ephron return\, while Smith welcomes guitarist Brad Allen Williams and keyboardist Jon Cowherd to the combo.\n\n\nNate Smith – drums\nJon Cowherd – piano\nFima Ephron – bass\nJaleel Shaw – alto & soprano saxophones\nAmma Whatt – vocals\nBrad Allen Williams – guitar

For over fifteen years\, the ensemble has created exciting and unexpected performances that constantly redefine the classical music experience. The ensemble has been praised for “commandingly elegant” (New York Times) performances\, the “rare power” (Washington Post) of their recordings\, and “an inspirational sense of fun and curiosity” (Minnesota Star-Tribune). Third Coast Percussion maintains a busy tour schedule\, with past performances in 38 of the 50 states and Washington\, D.C.\, plus international tour dates in Canada\, Colombia\, Hong Kong\, Germany\, Italy\, Lithuania\, the Netherlands\, Poland\, Taiwan\, and the United Kingdom. \nA direct connection with the audience is at the core of all of Third Coast Percussion’s work\, whether the musicians are speaking from the stage about a new piece of music\, inviting the audience to play along in a concert or educational performance\, or inviting their fans around the world to create new music using one of their free mobile apps. The four members of Third Coast are also accomplished teachers\, and make active participation by all students the cornerstone of all their educational offerings. The quartet’s curiosity and eclectic taste have led to a series of unlikely collaborations that have produced exciting new art. The ensemble has worked with engineers at the University of Notre Dame\, architects at the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation\, dancers at Hubbard Street Dance Chicago\, and musicians from traditions ranging from the mbira music of Zimbabwe’s Shona people\, to indie rockers and footwork producers\, to some of the world’s leading concert musicians. Third Coast Percussion served as ensemble-in-residence at the University of Notre Dame’s DeBartolo Performing Arts Center from 2013-2018\, and currently serves as ensemble-in-residence at Denison University. \nThe four members of Third Coast Percussion (Sean Connors\, Robert Dillon\, Peter Martin\, and David Skidmore) met while studying percussion music at Northwestern University with Michael Burritt and James Ross.
