SUMMARY:Crosstown Arts presents: Bleeding Together\, [Fe]atured Ar[Ti]sts\, and Zen on the Installment Plan
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents an Opening Reception for three new exhibitions\, “Bleeding \nTogether”\, “Fe]atured Ar[Ti]sts ”\, and “Zen on the Installment Plan” featuring works by \nartist duo A Correspondence\, the Metal Museum\, and Tad Lauritzen Wright. Come celebrate \nthe opening of new works with a musical experience by DJ Ty Boyland\, a special menu created \nby Bao Toan—food generously donated by Ben E. Keith–and a complimentary cocktail from Art \nBar at Crosstown Arts. The event is free and open to the public. Wrap up the evening at the \nFunkytown Dance Party with South Memphis Jeff in the Green Room at Crosstown Arts! \nBleeding Together – A Correspondence \nIn Bleeding Together\, Arauz and Meyers bring their practice into the gallery and invite the viewer further \ninto their collaborative process. Collages and poems are disassembled and presented as wheat-pasted \nwood panels\, creating an intimate dialogue for the viewer to witness — imagining how these pieces are \nmeant to fit together\, what they might mean alone\, together\, in different arrangements. Bleeding Together \nexplores what it means to coalesce and be vulnerable\, to find community and tend to our wounds \ntogether. \nA Correspondence is the name under which Andres Arauz and Abby Meyers make collaborative work\, \nwhich primarily takes the form of wheat-pasted street art. Arauz is a first-generation Nicaraguan American \nborn and raised in New Orleans\, LA. He received a degree in graphic design from Loyola and a master’s \nin arts education from the University of Memphis\, and currently works as an art teacher. Arauz specializes \nin photo collage\, design\, and photography. Meyers is a born and raised Memphian. She is a visual artist\, \na poet\, and an award-winning filmmaker whose work explores themes including trauma\, memory\, and \nsurvival\, particularly as it relates to sexual violence. \n[Fe]ATURED AR[Ti]STS – Metal Museum \n[Fe]ATURED AR[Ti]STS was created and curated by staff members of Memphis’s own Metal Museum. \nMuch like elements are the building blocks of the materials we use\, creativity\, collaboration\, and tradition \nare the cornerstones of the Museum. Staff across departments maintain their own artistic practices\, \ndisplaying a tremendous variety of styles and mediums. Our shops build custom commissions\, repair and \nrestore all manner of metal objects\, and offer public workshops that span traditional methods and \ncontemporary technology. Our galleries and permanent collection host exhibitions of works made around \nthe world. Together\, these various elements form an institution that is greater than the sum of its parts\, \npreserving and advancing fine metalworks on both local and international scales. This collection exhibitsdifferent processes integral to the Museum’s mission and other artistic mediums important to our staff’s \ncreative pursuits. Primarily composed of forging\, casting\, fabricating\, and fine smithing\, this showcase \nalso features other techniques such as photography\, painting\, woodworking\, and music. \nZen on the Installment Plan – Tad Lauritzen Wright \nZen on the Installment Plan was conceived as a meditation on the contradiction of chaos and \ncontemplation. These pieces do not seek answers but rather function as reactions to observations. The \ncontinuous line throughout much of the work is a visual and conceptual thread used to emphasize our \nconnectedness to humanity\, nature\, and repeated histories. The photo abstractions and sculptural works \nconstructed from salvaged wood emphasize controlled chaos and the instability of modern perception. \nThis work is intended to foster a dialogue between viewer\, object\, and environment. \nI’ve been thinking about scale and proportion a lot lately. The size of an object can make it seem \nimportant or unimportant. And we all measure things according to the size of ourselves. Things that are \nsmaller than us can seem trivial\, while larger objects can feel overwhelming. Yet\, when considering the \nvastness of the universe\, our planet seems tiny and inconsequential. \nMy current series focuses on the juxtaposition of small figures within expansive landscapes\, alongside \nlarge-scale portraits depicting figures of profound personal meaning from my childhood. The pieces \ninvolving small figures in massive spaces\, create a sense of insignificance. The large portraits give off a \nsense of immense importance. But this is all relative to the size of the viewer and how it makes them \nfeel. I often think about how humans fit into this world and how small we actually are compared to the rest \nof the universe. I am very interested in the purpose of human existence\, but it seems like we do a lot of \nweird things for no reason. And I’d like to learn as much as I can with my time here on Earth. \nTad Lauritzen Wright\, born in 1972 in San Angelo\, Texas\, is a mixed media artist known for his \nexperimental approach to art-making. Growing up in San Angelo\, Lauritzen Wright was immersed in a rich \ntapestry of cultural influences\, including rodeo\, punk rock\, and Mexican border town aesthetics. These \nearly experiences shaped his creative vision\, leading him to explore themes of mythology\, personal \nhistory\, and societal narratives in his work. Lauritzen Wright earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts from \nNebraska Wesleyan University in 1994 and later obtained a Master of Fine Arts from the Memphis \nCollege of Art in 2002. \nSince 2000\, he has exhibited his work extensively across the United States. \nIn his current practice\, Lauritzen Wright combines symbolism\, abstraction\, poetry\, painting\, and \ncollage to create mixed media installations that invite viewers to engage in personal discovery. \nHis work is characterized by a playful interplay between fine art\, craft\, and contemplation. This \napproach reflects his belief in generating impromptu reactions to ideas\, thoughts\, or experiences\, \naiming to elevate everyday observations through art. \nDJ Ty Boyland: \nTy Boyland is an Emmy-nominated producer/engineer\, songwriter\, and DJ dedicated to using music as a \ntool for community building and youth empowerment. With over 30 years in the industry\, his work has \nbeen featured on Netflix\, BET\, and MTV. Ty leads Ty Boyland Consulting LLC and proudly serves as an \nInnovator in Residence at the Cossitt Library\, where he mentors and creates programs that blend music\, \ntech\, and life skills for Memphis’ future creatives. \nBao Toan: \nThe name “Bao Toan” meaning to “preserve” or “complete protection\,” reflects not only our family’s \njourney but also their enduring legacy here in Memphis\, TN. After fleeing Vietnam during the war\, our \nfamily found refuge here in 1978 and worked tirelessly to rebuild their lives while uplifting others in thecommunity. Our grandmother opened the first Asian grocery store in the area\, giving other immigrants a \nplace to find similar ingredients—and\, in a way\, a taste of home. Together with our grandfather\, they went \non to establish the first Buddhist temple in the region in 1985 that still sits right off Jefferson They helped \nother immigrant families settle and eventually thrive in Memphis. Their efforts didn’t just preserve their \nculture; they built a community where others could do the same. At Bao Toan\, we continue this legacy of \npreservation and connection. \n“We pulled flavors from different regions so people can experience the contrast between northern\, \ncentral\, and southern Vietnamese food\,” owner Karina Tong explained. “Northern dishes highlight fresh \nherbs and balanced flavors\, while central and southern cuisine incorporates more spice and influences \nfrom bordering countries.” \nCrosstown Arts Gallery | Free Admission \nMay 30 – September 14\, 2025

SUMMARY:CROSSTOWN ARTS PRESENT DALLAS UGLY WITH CYRENA WAGES
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts present DALLAS UGLY with Cyrena Wages in The Green Room\nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nFriday\, JUNE 6\, 2025\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $20 (plus fees) | $25 at the door |\nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE\nNashville’s Dallas Ugly (Libby Weitnauer\, Owen Burton\, and Eli Broxham) is a band of truly trusted friends who – after a decade of playing together – return with their best work yet.\nSitting somewhere between indie rock and Americana and beautifully produced in collaboration with Grammy-winning engineer Justin Francis\, their sophomore album See Me Now is contemporary\, crisp\, and alive. It is a fiddle-filled entry in the current band-with-guitar renaissance that puts them in conversation with acts like MJ Lenderman\, Big Thief\, and Allegra Krieger while still channelling the sparkly sing-along heights of late 90s radio. The growth of heartache\, finding footing in an unstable world\, and modern anxiety resonate out in soaring harmony.

SUMMARY:CROSSTOWN ARTS PRESENTS: Mississippi Blues Night with Willie Farmer and Ryan Lee Crosby
DESCRIPTION:Purchase TICKETS HERE\n\n\nThough the Mississippi Delta’s Willie Farmer and Rhode Island’s Ryan Lee Crosby come from different backgrounds\, they are each dedicated to performing Mississippi blues music. Farmer — a Big Legal Mess and Music Maker Foundation artist from Duck Hill\, MS — focuses on Delta- and Memphis-style blues while Crosby performs the stomping North Mississippi and the haunting Bentonia\, MS blues. (Skip James is from Bentonia\, MS.) The Memphis Flyer terms Farmer‘s last recording a “great album.” Though Crosby is a yankee\, he has spent considerable time in Memphis and Mississippi and is mentored by GRAMMY Award nominee and juke joint proprietor Jimmy “Duck” Holmes. \n\n\nWillie Farmer is living proof that Mississippi continues to produce deep blues. The 65-year-old guitarist is neither a soul modernist nor a revivalist\, but a small-town auto mechanic who’s never shaken his love for old-school legends like Muddy Waters\, Howlin’ Wolf\, and Lightnin’ Hopkins. \nA lifelong resident of tiny Duck Hill\, located in the hills east of the Delta\, Farmer grew up on his family’s farm. He picked up the acoustic guitar in his early teens\, and after saving money from picking cotton\, he bought his first electric instrument. He began performing at school events and local gatherings\, learning blues and R&B by tuning into a powerful Nashville radio station. \nIn his early twenties\, he joined a loose-knit band that played juke joints around the area\, including Duck Hill\, Grenada\, Kilmichael\, and deep into the Delta in Greenwood and Charleston. But he eventually grew weary of the rowdy club scene\, where “people liked to fight like crazy.” \nIn 2003\, Farmer helped found the Grassroots Blues Festival\, held in a meadow outside Duck Hill. The annual event connected him with downhome blues artists from across Mississippi\, including Willie King and Leo Welch. \nFarmer’s first serious studio effort came with “The Man From the Hill” (2019\, Big Legal Mess)\, recorded over several sessions at Bruce Watson’s Memphis-based Delta-Sonic Sound. Working in a North Mississippi Hill Country vein\, the album features Jimbo Mathus and drummer George Sluppick\, with Farmer also exploring gospel harmonies alongside Memphis’ Barnes Brothers. \nFor the past thirty years\, he’s operated his own auto repair shop\, but he hopes the success of the album and touring opportunities will let him finally step away from the garage. The Memphis Flyer called the record a “great album\,” highlighting his playing as full of “rough-hewn strength and deep sensitivity\,” while Relix Magazine noted that it “showcases Farmer’s gritty blues approach as he honors longtime influences like Lightnin’ Hopkins and Howlin’ Wolf.” \nIn his upcoming album At the Blue Front\, Ryan Lee Crosby channels the ethereal sounds of Bentonia\, Mississippi\, through a live field recording captured at the legendary Blue Front Café\, the oldest active juke joint in the U.S. In the spirit of folklorists like Alan Lomax and David Evans\, the album was recorded on reel-to-reel tape at the historic venue owned by Grammy-nominated bluesman Jimmy “Duck” Holmes. \nSupported by Holmes\, Grant Smith on calabash\, and Jay Scheffler on harmonica\, Crosby delivers eight tracks that honor Bentonia and North Mississippi blues traditions while reflecting his own distinctive voice. The album\, rich with spontaneously composed performances\, centers on Crosby’s electric 12-string guitar\, played in both standard and “crossnote” tunings. \nCrosby’s journey into Bentonia blues began in 2012 after discovering the early recordings of Skip James. He started formal studies with Holmes in 2019\, but his influences also include Jack Owens\, Cornelius Bright\, and Robert Belfour\, Jessie Mae Hemphill\, and RL Boyce—the latter two of whom he has performed and recorded with. \nDubbed “a young torchbearer of the style” by Smithsonian Magazine\, Crosby blends deep tradition with personal mysticism. His sound is raw\, immediate\, and reverent to place and people. \nHe has earned features in Guitar Player\, Premier Guitar\, Aquarium Drunkard\, Vintage Guitar\, American Blues Scene\, and WBUR (Boston NPR)\, among others. His performance credits include Juke Joint Fest\, Meadowlark Fest\, and Levon Helm Studios\, and he has also worked with producer Bruce Watson of Fat Possum Records.
