SUMMARY:Sand Swan | Listening Event at MLL
DESCRIPTION:September 25 @ 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm CDT \n\n\nSand Swan is the heavy dark rock musical outlet for multi-instrumentalist and Midtown Memphian\, Trent Falgoust. Originally conceived in 2012\, with no serious consideration for releasing music\, Trent spent a handful of years content to keep his music solely as a personal hobby. But around 2020 his mindset began to change. ‘”At the onset of the pandemic\, I found myself with more time being at home surrounded by music gear and the ability to record. My mind kept telling me “Why the hell not? Who cares what happens?” he says. And so\, he coined the name “Sand Swan” which is a twisted version of the French words “sans soin” meaning “without care”. Sand Swan is an attempt to smash the many genres of rock music that make up Trent’s influences into a single cohesive vision. “I like to describe it as the aspirations of Prog Rock artists such as Pink Floyd\, Peter Gabriel\, or Porcupine Tree being performed with the aesthetics of 90s alternative artists such as Soundgarden\, Jeff Buckley\, or Nine Inch Nails.” he states.\n \nAfter releasing a 5 song EP in 2024\, Sand Swan is now digitally releasing a full length LP titled “Anomies & Enemies”\, on September 12th\, 2025 to all streaming platforms. The new album is a thematically heavy reflection that delves into recent societal trends. It covers topics of wealth disparity\, political demagoguery\, technocratic division\, opioid abuse\, rising fascism\, and deaths of despair. While also being instrumentally diverse; covering styles of progressive metal\, punk rock\, industrial\, ambient\, as well as some darker classical and jazz moments. Take this chance to hear the brand new album at the Listening Event on Thursday\, September 25th (6 to 7:30PM). Hosted by The Memphis Listening Lab.

SUMMARY:Crosstown Arts Presents: Kafé Kirk: Kirk Whalum & Lindsey Webster
DESCRIPTION:Join Grammy-winning saxophonist Kirk Whalum for Kafé Kirk\, an ongoing jazz series in Crosstown Theater featuring musical and spiritual collaborations with special guest artists. This concert will feature legendary musician Lindsey Webster. \n\n \nGet Tickets Now \nLindsey Webster:\nA charismatic and stunning artist\, Lindsey Webster has established herself as a rarity in the world of contemporary jazz. With a soulful\, authentic\, and effortless voice\, she has successfully shaken up the male- and instrumental-dominated genre\, carving a unique path of her own. Soultracks once declared\, “If Carole King and Sade had a kid\, she would be Lindsey Webster.”\n\nA native of Woodstock\, NY\, Webster grew up surrounded by music\, listening to her “loving hippie parents’” collection of Jimi Hendrix\, Beatles\, and Elvis Costello LPs. She was first a cellist\, studying at the prestigious Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts\, before transitioning to vocals. She also has a surprising background in cellular and molecular biology and once worked as an EMT and firefighter. Webster’s music is deeply personal and inspired by her belief that “everything is energy\,” a philosophy that guides her to focus on her spirit and create music that is honest and authentic.\n\nIn 2016\, Webster made history with her original song “Fool Me Once\,” becoming the first vocalist to hit #1 on the Billboard Contemporary Jazz charts since Sade in 2010. She held the top spot for four weeks\, beating Sade’s three-week run. The winning combination of Webster and her long-time musical partner and former husband\, pianist Keith Slattery\, has resulted in two Billboard #1s and eight Top 10s on the Billboard charts. \nCrosstown Theater \nSunday\, September 28\, 6PM \nGet Tickets Now

From those who are either pushed to create from inner forces\, or who create to show they deserve to be recognized. Street singer\, guitarist\, and roots music revolutionary Sunny War (she/her) has always been an outsider\, always felt the drive to define her place in the world through music and songwriting. Her restless spirit\, a byproduct of growing up semi-nomadic with a single mother\, led her across the country\, making a name for her prodigious guitar work and incisive songwriting\, which touches on everything from police violence to alcoholism to love found and lost. \nWe’ve been a fan of Sunny’s for years now\, and followed her even more closely when she began collaborating with our friend Anthony Da Costa. This show has been years in the making\, so come join us for this outside-the-box scheduling to make sure you don’t miss the chance to finally welcome Sunny War to Memphis!

This intimate concert offers fans a first listen to the stories and sounds shaping The Gospel Truth\, alongside the authenticity and connection that have defined her career. \nGarrison Starr is the quintessential musical triple-threat\, singer\, songwriter\, Grammy-nominated record producer\, and her soon-to-be-released latest full-length album\, Garrison Starr and The Gospel Truth\, reveals her at the height of her powers. \nStarr calls the new collection of songs\, “Swamp Gospel Hymns for Humans\,” the next chapter in her story of recovery and healing from her Evangelical Christian upbringing. Her previous album\, “Girl I Used To Be\,” released during the pandemic in March 2021\, launched her exploration of deconstruction on the path towards self-love and forgiveness. “Girl I Used To Be” is the story of saying goodbye to what was\, and The Gospel Truth is the story of the journey over the bridge to freedom. \nStarr has been releasing singles from the new record over the last several months\, following a number of TV placements on Monarch\, Bull\, and most recently\, Walker: Independence\, a consistent pattern for Starr throughout her remarkable career.

SUMMARY:Crosstown Arts Presents | Nick Zoulek: “Enter Branch”
DESCRIPTION:Nick Zoulek: “Enter Branch” \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts \nSaturday\, October 4th\, 2025 \nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm \n$20 in advance (plus fees) | $25 at the door | $10 student tickets \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nNick Zoulek builds worlds out of brass\, breath\, and reeds. Based in Chicago\, Zoulek is a saxophonist whose music feels physical\, visceral\, and urgent. Tender one moment\, tectonic the next\, his sounds are simultaneously alive and mechanized. Allan Kozinn wrote in The Wall Street Journal\, “Zoulek’s performance\, on saxophones in every range\, is stunningly virtuosic\, whatever the genre.” A musician of “pure mindfulness and talent” (PopMatters)\, his intuitive playing results in a “no-holds barred engine of avant-garde exploration.” (Portland Press Herald) \nZoulek’s new album\, Enter Branch\, unfolds as a narrative of growth. It bridges his vivid approach to the saxophone with a cast of collaborators from across the musical spectrum\, including Sean Carey (S. Carey\, Bon Iver)\, spoken-word legend J. Ivy\, Nathalie Joachim\, Nick Photinos\, Chris Porterfield (Field Report)\, ~Nois\, and the Tontine Ensemble. These artistic voices merge with Zoulek’s prismatic performance style. His solo saxophone sound is raw\, almost impossibly layered. This is not achieved through digital effects like looping or delay\, but rather through a tapestry of circular breathing\, extended overtones\, vocalizations\, and unrelenting arpeggios. Every tone of the saxophone is live and unedited\, recorded in full\, uninterrupted takes\, and shaped with experimental mic setups. Even the cracks of the saxophone’s sound create a root system of expression\, woven with strands of vocals\, bowed strings\, ambient drones\, seismic depth\, and unfiltered warmth from his collaborators. \nZoulek is thrilled to bring Enter Branch to Crosstown Arts\, collaborating with members of the University of Memphis Rudi E Scheidt School of Music to bring his music to life.

SUMMARY:Crosstown Arts Presents: Brantley Ellzey - Reflection + Ritual + Refuge
DESCRIPTION:Extended through January 29\, 2026Crosstown Arts Galleries \nFree and open to the public\nTues-Friday from 11-8pm and Saturday and Sunday from noon-6pm \nIn Reflection + Ritual + Refuge\, artist Brantley Ellzey weaves a world where repetition becomes remembrance\, where reflection fractures into beauty\, and where the quiet\, persistent act of making becomes a form of resistance. \nAcross media and gesture\, Ellzey explores how we survive: by circling back\, by touching what has been lost\, by naming what others ignore. Rolling\, collecting\, documenting\, layering—these are his rituals. Some are personal. Some are political. All are acts of reckoning. \nThe spiral is his recurring form. It turns through the exhibition like a silent logic\, natural\, ancestral\, unstoppable. It is found in architecture\, in emotion\, in protest\, in paper. Each gesture becomes a structure. Each structure becomes a kind of refuge. \nThis is work that blurs the line between the sacred and the ordinary\, between the deeply interior and the publicly defiant. There are no beginnings or endings here\, only movement\, only return. \nReflection + Ritual + Refuge is not a single story\, but a field of them. It invites the viewer to look closer\, to enter slowly\, to see how something small\, repeated\, can become something vast. \nBrantley Ellzey is a Memphis-based artist known for transforming everyday printed materials into sculptural works that explore memory\, place\, and cultural identity. Raised in Osceola\, Arkansas\, and trained at Tulane University in Theater and Architecture\, Ellzey brings a multidisciplinary approach that blends architecture\, design\, and storytelling. His work appears in collections across the country\, including St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital\, Steelcase\, Conde Nast\, and Nicole Kidman’s production headquarters.
