This very special performance will feature saxophonist Mindi Abair. \n\n\n\nMINDI ABAIR\nTwo-time GRAMMY nominee Mindi Abair is a saxophonist\, vocalist\, and author of “How To Play Madison Square Garden.” You might know her as the featured saxophonist on American Idol\, or from touring and/or recording with Aerosmith\, Duran Duran\, Gregg Allman\, Smokey Robinson\, and more. As a solo artist\, she has consistently topped the Contemporary Jazz and Blues charts\, earning her 1 st GRAMMY nomination in 2014 for Summer Horns and her 2 nd nomination in 2015 for her solo album Wild Heart. In 2019 she launched www.wineandjazz.com bringing together the worlds of wine and music through her wine club and worldwide adventures. \n\n\n\nKIRK WHALUM\nSoulful\, passionate\, stirring…these are the words most often used to describe Kirk’s music. Forged from his Memphis\, Tennessee\, gospel roots and his 1980s initiation into the thriving Houston\, TX nightclub scene\, Kirk’s big\, rich tenor sound is unmistakably his. The ’80s were highlighted by Kirk’s stepping out of his blossoming sideman role and forming his own band. It was there that Kirk ultimately developed both his “voice” and songwriting in the crucible of the local club scene—especially at a rooftop club called Cody’s. It was also in Houston where jazz pianist Bob James “discovered” him and brought him on tour\, which led to five successful albums with Columbia Records\, including Cache\, Kirk’s first #1 album.\n\nAs well\, Kirk and Bob received a Grammy nomination for their collaboration album\, Joined at the Hip. After moving to Los Angeles\, Kirk became an in demand session player for top artists like\, Barbara Streisand\, Al Jarreau\, Luther Vandross\, Larry Carlton\, Quincy Jones and most notably\, Whitney Houston\, amongst many others. It’s his sax heard on the mega-hit\, “I Will Always Love You.” Kirk soon followed that career high point with his phenomenal hit album released on Warner Bros. Records\, For You\, perhaps the most successful of over 25 solo recordings to date; others include his eclectic\, and much lauded\, Gospel According to Jazz series\, (Chapters 1\, 2\, 3 and 4). In addition to his many solo projects\, Kirk was also a member of the popular soul/jazz group\, BWB\, which features Kirk as the “W” of the group with Rick Braun (trumpet) and Norman Brown (guitar). \nKirk is the recipient of numerous awards and acknowledgements for his musical excellence including three Dove Award nominations\, an NAACP Image Award nomination and has won two Stellar Awards- Gospel music’s highest honor. A twelve time Grammy nominee\, Kirk won his first Grammy award (2011)for Best Gospel Song (“It’s What I Do”—featuring Lalah Hathaway) alongside life-long friend and gifted songwriter\, Jerry Peters.

DESCRIPTION:WYXR 91.7 FM’s “Stereo Sessions” \, presented by MEMPHO\, offers hi-fi album listening parties at the Memphis Listening Lab. \nSid Selvidge’s debut album\, “Portrait\,” released in 1969 on Enterprise Records (a subsidiary of Stax)\, stands as a timeless masterpiece within the realm of country blues and folk. A native of the Mississippi Delta and a figure deeply rooted in the Memphis music scene\, Selvidge approached his music with a genial yet uncompromising attitude. Unlike many of his contemporaries\, Selvidge did not aspire to the grandeur of coliseum crowds or commercial success. Instead\, he found solace in intimate venues and a sound that beautifully straddled the folk-blues line\, embracing the influences of 1960s coffeehouse anthems\, plaintive Anglo folk balladry\, and raw African-American musical traditions. \n“Portrait” showcases Selvidge’s lilting falsetto\, conveying both humility and authority\, and his approach to music was characterized by a genuine custodianship for the rich musical heritage of the Southern United States. He has worked alongside world-famous artists such as Andrew Hill\, Lee Konitz\, Paul Bley\, John Abercrombie\, Kenny Wheeler\, Paul Motian\, Joe Maneri\, Mary Havorson\, Tomasz Stanko\, David Liebman\, Uri Caine\, Greg Osby\, Bill Stewart\, Marc Copland\, Fred Hersch\, Toots Thielemans\, Maria Schneider\, and many others. \n\n\n\nIn recent years\, he has taken on the role of bandleader of various projects. His group Byzantine Monkey\, released their first CD on the Firehouse 12 label. It was reviewed in Downbeat and received 4 stars. “On his first album as a leader he displays a sonic vision that’s all his own\,” says Peter Margarsak. In 2010\, John Hébert Trio released Spiritual Lover to positive reviews. According to Stuart Broomer\, “it’s a trio of genuinely equal parts and plays music of great melodic strength.” \n\n\n\nHe is also named in Downbeat’s 2006\, 2007\, 2008\, 2009 and 2010 Critics Poll as a “Rising Star Acoustic Bassist.” Most recently in 2011\, John won the poll as “Rising Star Acoustic Bassist.” John is also featured on Andrew Hill’s last Blue Note release\, “Time Lines” which was awarded “Record of the Year” by Downbeat’s Jazz Critics Poll in 2006. John has also performed around the world at festivals such as the North Sea Jazz Festival\, Tampere Jazz Festival\, Montreal Jazz Festival\, Moers Jazz Festival\, Ear Shot Jazz Festival and San Francisco Jazz Festival.

DESCRIPTION:Candice Ivory will be sharing her latest release: “When The Levee Breaks: The Music Of Memphis Minnie”with us in the SoundRoom along with a discussion led by Jon Hornyak. \nAfter releasing three acclaimed albums of jazz-driven original songs\, vocalist Candice Ivory reveals a whole new sound on When the Levee Breaks: The Music of Memphis Minnie. Raised in Memphis and based in St. Louis\, Ivory hails from an illustrious musical family that shaped Memphis’s secular and sacred sounds. Her great-uncle was the singer and guitarist Will Roy Sanders of the Fieldstones\, one of the premier Memphis blues bands from the 1970s to the 1990s. Ivory grew up in the church\, and by the age of eleven\, she was singing in a choir that featured the soon-to-be-famous R&B artist D’Angelo. When the Levee Breaks brings together all of her formative musical experiences in a tribute to Memphis Minnie (1897-1973)\, whose powerhouse vocals and compositional creativity served as inspiration for Ivory’s own innovations as the Queen of Avant Soul. They were all neighbors\, each one living alone on one floor of a five-story flat.\n\n\n\nCake-baking is a shared passion of the five-member group\, but in the sugar shortages early in the 2020 pandemic\, they found themselves so continually knocking on each other’s doors asking for a single cup of sugar that a group decision was made to all move in together and share cake-baking resources. Since everyone knows all good rhythms begin in the kitchen\, it wasn’t before long that the group began to write and perform together across the nation.\n\n\n\nCritics hail the group as “having more kick than a bagged-up mule” (Rotary Times) and their live show “… going down smoother than a can of [beans] warmed on the campfire” (Cowboy Gazette).

This special Jazz Month presentation of the series features the Muneer Nasser Quintet paying tribute to the music legend Miles Davis. \n  \n\n\n\n\nMuneer Nasser Quintet’s distinct brand of jazz is part Memphis blues\, part New York fire\, and a healthy dose of DC flavor. Born in 1967 to the late\, great jazz bassist Jamil Nasser\, Muneer’s exposure to jazz was early and powerful.Muneer says that in 1976 “my dad took me to see Dizzy Gillespie at the Village Gate and Dizzy blew the place apart. I had to get a trumpet and weeks later I did.” \nAfter graduating from high school\, he attended Shaw University in Raleigh\, North Carolina\, where he played with Paul Jeffrey and gigged at churches and cultural venues around town. He transferred to Howard University and graduated with a BBA in International Business. DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents a special screening of You’re the Life of Me in Crosstown Theater. \nCrosstown Theater\nThursday\, October 3\, 2024\nTickets: $5 at the door\nDoors at 6:30 pm | Film begins at 7:00 pm (sharp!) \nShevan Bastian / 2024  \n\n \nFirst time filmmaker Shevan Bastian sets out in Jackson Tennessee with these questions in mind\, as he interviews and works with a group of musicians\, while examining the roots of Black music in a small Southern city on the edge of the Mississippi Delta. \nThe documentary film You’re the Life of Me loosely follows the pursuit of creative renewal that Howard Rambsy and Barbara Jean Mercer experience as they engage with music making in their later years. Rambsy has written and arranged an obscure 1977 soul song recorded by a band consisting of his friends and family called Cold-Blooded Express. The song\, You’re the Life of Me\, is being recreated with the original members of Cold Blooded as well as Los Yesterdays\, a younger duo consisting of Chicano members of LA’s burgeoning modern soul scene. Mercer dreams of recapturing some of the freedom of her youth by performing from her catalog for a large community of British Northern Soul fans at a reunion in Detroit. \nRe-accessing their best creative selves\, the two stories bookend interviews and discussions with noted local Jackson Black musical excellence about local musical pedagogy\, the role of the Church in popular music and the former power and glory of juke joints and their contribution to musicianship. \nThroughout the film\, Howard and Barbara set the tempo\, voicing ideas around belonging\, love and freedom\, foregrounded by a dreamlike accompaniment of the Jacksonian landscape of kudzu and cotton fields. You’re the Life of Me is a love letter to Jackson\, a gentle reminder of the intrinsic connections between community and the art it creates\, and a response to the tension between America’s love for Black culture but not Black people. \n  \nThe Crosstown Arts Film Series showcases a diverse collection of independent\, international\, historically significant\, artistic\, experimental\, cult\, underground\, and documentary features.

DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Lovelight Orchestra featuring John Nemeth in the Theater \nThe Theater at Crosstown Arts\nFriday\, October 11\, 2024\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $30 \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nThe phrase “the Memphis sound” often evokes Sun rockabilly or the mid-‘60s “deep soul” era of Stax\, but a style equally important in the city’s rich musical history was the big band blues found on the singles of Bobby “Blue” Bland\, B.B. King and Herman ”Junior” Parker. It’s a sound proudly celebrated today by the Love Light Orchestra\, a group of seasoned Memphis musicians whose name derives from Bland’s 1961 hit “Turn On Your Love Light.” \nThe 10-piece band—initially envisioned by guitarist Joe Restivo\, vocalist John Nemeth and arranger/trumpeter Marc Franklin—also reveals their affection for Bland here through covers of “”I’ve Been Wrong So Long” and “Poverty\,” and they tip their hat to King and Parker through\, respectively\, “Bad Breaks” and “Sometimes.” \nIn addition to dipping into the catalogs of Buddy Ace\, Freddie King\, and Percy Mayfield\, the band demonstrates their deftness with uptown blues via the solid originals “Singing For My Supper\, “Lonesome and High\,” and the Ray Charles-inspired opener “See Why I Love You.” Casual fans of Memphis music might only recognize their cover of Al Green’s iconic “Love and Happiness\,” but it’s reset here as a shuffle\, building upon riffs that Franklin says were inspired by Charles Mingus’ “Fables of Faubus.” \nThe Love Light Orchestra’s overall sound\, says Franklin\, was inspired by Joe Scott\, the longtime arranger for Bland\, whose work Franklin discovered after he was hired to play with Bland in the early ‘90s [Saxophonist Art Edmaiston and drummer Earl Lowe also did stints with Bland]. “The first time I heard his work it sounded like Ellington\, but more downhome\, with extended harmonics that you don’t necessarily hear on blues or soul records. It’s a jazz thing\, throwing extra notes into the chords—at Stax they didn’t do 6th chords.” \nBland and King’s signature styles developed with the aid of formally trained Memphis musicians versed in swing arrangements. King’s first two singles featured the city’s first family of jazz\, Phineas Newborn\, Sr.\, and his sons Calvin and Phineas\, Jr.\, and some of King and Bland’s early recordings featured arranger and multi-instrumentalist Onzie Horne\, Sr.\, later a contributor to “Theme From Shaft.” \n“The Memphis sound of the ‘50s put in the sophistication with the horns\, but it never lost that gritty aspect of the blues\,” says Nemeth. “And the spirituality in the vocals was tremendous— the melodies have such great movements\, and the lyrical rhythms are perfect.” \nGuitarist Restivo has plenty of solos here\, but notes “we wanted to make a horn record\, so the featured instrument is saxophone.
