SUMMARY:Crosstown Arts presents Kirk Kafé: Kirk Whalum with Kim Burrell
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Kirk Kafé: Kirk Whalum with Kim Burrell in the Crosstown Theater \nCrosstown Theater\nSunday\, March 30\, 2025\nDoors open at 5:30 | Show begins at 6:00\nTickets: $59 (plus fees) \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \n\n\n\nJoin Grammy-winning saxophonist Kirk Whalum for Kafé Kirk\, an ongoing jazz series in Crosstown Theater featuring musical and spiritual collaborations with special guest artists.\n\n\nKIRK WHALUM\nSoulful\, passionate\, stirring…these are the words most often used to describe Kirk’s music. Forged from his Memphis\, Tennessee\, gospel roots and his 1980s initiation into the thriving Houston\, TX nightclub scene\, Kirk’s big\, rich tenor sound is unmistakably his. The ’80s were highlighted by Kirk’s stepping out of his blossoming sideman role and forming his own band. It was there that Kirk ultimately developed both his “voice” and songwriting in the crucible of the local club scene—especially at a rooftop club called Cody’s. It was also in Houston where jazz pianist Bob James “discovered” him and brought him on tour\, which led to five successful albums with Columbia Records\, including Cache\, Kirk’s first #1 album.\n\nKIM BURRELL\nHouston-based singer and pianist Kim Burrell\, known for her unique “jazz gospel” sound\, began her professional career singing with gospel greats like Rev. James Cleveland. Her solo recording career took off with releases on Tommy Boy Gospel\, and she’s since collaborated with artists ranging from R. Kelly and George Clinton to gospel stars like Shirley Caesar and Kirk Franklin\, and even secular icons like Stevie Wonder and Pharrell Williams (on the Hidden Figures soundtrack). A Grammy-nominated artist\, Kim continues to captivate audiences with her powerful voice and songwriting talent.

SUMMARY:Strictly Jazz: The Music of Chet Baker in The Green Room
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Strictly Jazz: The Music of Chet Baker in The Green Room \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nSunday\, April 13\, 2025\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $20 in advance (plus fees) | $25 at the door | $10 students with ID\nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \n\nThe Strictly Jazz Series\, a joint presentation by Crosstown Arts and Strictly Jazz Entertainment\, celebrates classic jazz music through contemporary interpretations by acclaimed musicians.\nTrumpeter and vocalist Chet Baker is one of the most well-known and revered of all jazz musicians. His smooth sound and interpretation of jazz and popular standards made him a true original in the art form. Join the Jeremy Shrader Quartet as we celebrate the music and the musician\, performing many hits from Chet Baker’s recorded catalog of American music. The concert also features long-time collaborators and Memphis jazz legends Jim Spake\, Alvie Givhan\, Bob Buckley\, and Earl Lowe.\nTo say that Jeremy Shrader loves good music would be an understatement. His passion shines through in the notes he plays on trumpet\, his singing of classic songs\, and the many bands he leads\, including the New Memphis Hepcats\, the Hot Memphis Five\, and the Jeremy Shrader Octet. Throughout his musical career in Memphis\, he has remained busy\, performing in countless settings\, with jazz as his main love.\nBorn in Clarksville\, Tennessee\, Jeremy was exposed to Southern gospel music early on. His parents were musicians—his father a drummer—and they sang standards like Chattanooga Choo Choo and Sentimental Journey around the house. He started piano at nine or ten\, learned guitar along the way\, and picked up trumpet in middle school to join the band. In high school\, he became immersed in swing and big band music\, playing in the jazz band and exploring other jazz styles.\nAt the University of Memphis\, he earned a degree in Jazz Composition while playing in multiple ensembles. As a sophomore\, he founded the New Memphis Hepcats\, which continues to thrive today. Jeremy also freelances across genres\, co-founded Electric Room Records\, and teaches privately—continuing to shape Memphis’s jazz scene with his passion and talent.

SUMMARY:Crosstown Arts presents Clark Sommer’s Feats Ephemera in The Green Room
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Clark Sommer’s Feats Ephemera in The Green Room \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nSaturday\, April 19\, 2025\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $25 (plus fees) | $30 at the door\nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \n\n\n\n\nIn the 15 years since signing on to Kurt Elling’s working band\, Grammy-Award Winning bassist Clark Sommers has emerged among Chicago’s indispensable bassists. He has filled his resume\, on stage and on disc\, in bands that range from the rambunctious 13-piece Chicago Yestet to the intimate settings of piano trios and vocalist-led quartets. His own projects include his open-sky trio Ba(SH) and the quintet Clark Sommers Lens. He’s collaborated with guitarists Jeff Parker and Matt Gold\, pianist Darrell Grant\, keyboard whiz Gary Versace\, and vibraphonist Joe Locke. His albums brim with his smart and tuneful compositions.\n\nBut by 2019\, he felt restricted in his musical development. “I wanted to get deeper into writing\,” he says now. ‘I wanted to see what I could do if I had the capacity to add more texture to a group – to go further into the exploration of harmonic possibilities\, and to try spreading out the sounds using different instruments.”\nIt is a *rare* opportunity to take in the beauty that is Clark Sommers’ large ensemble music and even rarer yet to feature a who’s-who of Memphis musicians in collaboration with some of Chicago’s most prolific talent.\n\nJoin Clark and his ensemble for ONE-night only in the Green Room at Crosstown Arts on Saturday\, April 19th at 7:30pm.

Meanwhile\, he’s played in a variety of Memphis groups ranging from Alex Chilton to Reigning Sound to Cloudland Canyon. Most recently\, he co-founded the improvisatory group Deepstaria Enigmatica\, whose debut\, The Eternal Now Is the Heart of a New Tomorrow\, was released on ESP-Disk’ this year. \n\nKhari Wynn is a guitarist from Boston\, Massachusetts\, now based in Memphis\, Tennesee\, best known for his work in the jazz-rock genre and hip hop. He is the son of acclaimed music critic/writer Ron Wynn and lived across from Willie Mitchell’s Royal Studios as a child. He began playing electric guitar at age fourteen and placed second in the 1999 National Jimi Hendrix Competition.

With the background of a licensed music therapist\, the curiosity of a writer\, the patience of a friend\, the vision of a social entrepreneur\, the resolve of an activist\, and the voice of a singer – Kyshona is unrelenting in her pursuit for the healing power of song. She lends her voice and music to those that feel they have been lost\, silenced\, forgotten or alone. Through her organization Your Song\, she facilitates therapeutic songwriting sessions with groups and individuals in hopes of reconnecting those who are divided. \nKyshona’s latest project\, Legacy\, tells the long story of her own family’s journey. Recorded right here in Memphis at Southern Grooves (our Crosstown Concourse neighbor)\, the album furthers Kyshona’s mission to connect and enlighten through the sharing of our histories. We are so excited to welcome her back to Folk All Y’all to celebrate this beautiful release.
