SUMMARY:CROSSTOWN ARTS PRESENTS KAFÉ KIRK: TEXAS JAZZ JAM
DESCRIPTION:CROSSTOWN ARTS PRESENTS KAFÉ KIRK: TEXAS JAZZ JAM\nTHE GREEN ROOM AT CROSSTOWN ARTS\nSUNDAY\, JULY 27TH 2025\nDOORS OPEN AT 5:30 PM | SHOW BEGINS AT 6:00 PM\nTICKETS: $59 IN ADVANCE (PLUS FEES) | $70 AT THE DOOR |\nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE\n\nJoin Grammy-winning saxophonist Kirk Whalum for Kafé Kirk\, an ongoing jazz series in Crosstown Theater featuring musical and spiritual collaborations with special guest artists. This concert will feature legendary musicians Tom Braxton and Bobby Lyle.\n\n\n\nTOM BRAXTON\n\n\n\nJazz saxophonist Tom Braxton has garnered critical acclaim while thrilling audiences of all ages from coast to coast and abroad for over two decades. From Africa to Japan\, from New York to L.A.\, Braxton’s distinct\, melodic sound leaves audiences astounded\, clapping\, and on their feet screaming for more! \n\n\n\n\n\nBOBBY LYLE\n\n\n\nLegendary pianist/organist Bobby Lyle was deemed a musical wonder when he released his first album\, The Genie\, which exploded onto the Billboard charts and blew the minds of jazz enthusiasts everywhere. Since that debut\, Lyle has kept a high standard for 30-plus years\, and has successfully maintained a flourishing\, always-evolving career. Lyle’s unrivaled high standard of excellence entitles him to a place on the throne alongside other musical royalty\, making him a permanent fixture in the prodigious society of jazz.\n\n\nKIRK WHALUM\n\nSoulful\, passionate\, stirring…these are the words most often used to describe Kirk’s music. Forged from his Memphis\, Tennessee\, gospel roots and his 1980s initiation into the thriving Houston\, TX nightclub scene\, Kirk’s big\, rich tenor sound is unmistakably his. The ’80s were highlighted by Kirk’s stepping out of his blossoming sideman role and forming his own band. It was there that Kirk ultimately developed both his “voice” and songwriting in the crucible of the local club scene—especially at a rooftop club called Cody’s. It was also in Houston where jazz pianist Bob James “discovered” him and brought him on tour\, which led to five successful albums with Columbia Records\, including Cache\, Kirk’s first #1 album.

SUMMARY:Crosstown Arts Presents - 100 Days of Blues: “The Blues Society”
DESCRIPTION:Meet us in the Crosstown Arts Theater for a special Memphis experience!\n\nIn 1960s Memphis\, Blues masters and Beatniks created The Memphis Country Blues Festival (1966-1970)\, an event that rocked the foundations of a conservative world. This documentary weaves together hypnotic and unforgettable performances with animation\, archival images\, and a chorus of diverse voices\, creating a moving image mixtape that  celebrates the music of Furry Lewis\, Rev. Robert Wilkins\, and Bukka White while re-evaluating the era.\n\nDirected by Augusta Palmer\, the daughter of one of the festival organizers\, The Blues Society is a kaleidoscopic documentary that asks viewers to draw their own conclusions about the events presented. Winner of an Audience Award at Indie Memphis and best Documentary at the Oxford Film Festival\, the film encourages viewers to ask questions about race\, music\, and American culture and to reconsider their preconceptions about Blues music\, Blues culture\, and Blues history.\n\nThis screening will be followed by a panel discussion with director Augusta Palmer\, appearing with iconic festival participants Jimmy Crosthwait\, Misty Blue Lavender (also known as Marcia Hare)\, and Chris Wimmer.\n\n\n\nLearn more about the film through their Facebook page.

This captivating duo combines noir-tinged groove and whip- smart songwriting to create spellbinding performances. Witness an intimate\, unforgettable night of music in a rare live-album recorded performance! \nMemphis based artists\, Amy LaVere and Will Sexton have been music collaborators and touring companions for 11 years. The quality of their craft\, the miles traveled and their original catalog is ever growing. LaVere’s storytelling and songwriting is barbed and sharp\, a delightful contrast to her sweet soprano vocals and smooth upright bass playing. The dark and charming writerhas released seven solo recordings and has collaborated with many other artists. Her latest project is slated for release in April of 2025 and she’s currently working on her first novel\, a work of ‘near fiction’ she calls it. Over the past three decades\, Will Sexton has grown into a skilled musical polymath: an esteemed writer\, producer\, session player and solo artist with a string of acclaimed LPs to his credit. Sexton’s seasoned guitar playing and velvet vocals are a superb fit to LaVere’s distinctive talent.
