SUMMARY:Tom Piazza – book event “Living in the Present with John Prine”
DESCRIPTION:October 14 @ 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm CDT \n\n\nPresented in conjunction with Burke’s Book Store: \nIn the spring of 2018\, Tom Piazza climbed into a 1977 Coupe de Ville with the great singer-songwriter John Prine to write an article for the Oxford American. Their Florida road trip ignited a deep friendship\, full of tall tales over epic meals\, long nights playing guitar and trading songs\, and visits back and forth between their homes in Nashville and New Orleans. Along the way\, Prine invited Piazza to work with him on a memoir\, with John telling sprawling\, often hilarious stories of his youth and family in Chicago and Kentucky\, his breakthrough into the national spotlight\, his riotous early years in the Nashville country scene\, and much more. When Prine died suddenly of COVID in April 2020\, that unfinished memoir evolved into an intimate and very personal narrative of the artist’s final years. In it\, Piazza offers fans an unforgettable portrait of the beloved musician in his late glory—as a boyish cut-up\, an epic raconteur\, a great American poet\, and\, most important\, a beloved friend.

SUMMARY:Richard Lawrence - Photo Exhibit Opening
DESCRIPTION:The Memphis Listening Lab hosts a special event where photography and music collide to tell the story of one of Memphis’ greatest assets\, its music. \nAs we look and listen\, Richard Lawrence’s photographs lead us through the quiet corners and familiar landmarks that have helped shape Memphis music. Some are still lively\, others long gone\, yet each carries a presence we take comfort in—even if we never set foot there. Together\, they invite us to see how the Memphis Sound lives and breathes all around us\, woven into the spaces where life itself unfolds.

SUMMARY:Crosstown Arts Presents: Cypress Ensemble: "Beethoven and Foote"
DESCRIPTION:Cypress Ensemble: “Beethoven and Foote” \nThe Green Room @ Crosstown Arts \nTuesday\, October 28\, 2025 \nDoors open at 6:30 pm | Show Starts at 7:00 pm \n$18 in advance (plus fees) | $22 at the door \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nThe Memphis-based Cypress Ensemble\, a group of close friends and dedicated musicians\, invites audiences to a compelling evening of chamber music that bridges the familiar and the forgotten. \nThe program features one of Beethoven’s beloved Opus 18 string quartets—works that have become cornerstones of the chamber music repertoire. Known for their youthful energy\, charm\, and emotional depth\, these quartets capture Beethoven at a moment of brilliant innovation. This particular quartet includes one of his most celebrated slow movements\, offering a moment of sublime beauty within a piece full of joy and wit. \nPaired with Beethoven’s classic is a true hidden gem: the Piano Quintet in A minor by Arthur Foote\, a name largely unfamiliar to modern audiences despite his historic importance. Foote was the first successful American-trained composer\, and in his time\, this quintet was hailed by critics as “as good as anything coming out of Europe right now.” His music is marked by lyrical\, easily followed melodies and a sense of adventurous exploration—hallmarks of early American classical expression. \nThis 70-minute concert offers a rare chance to hear Foote’s masterwork live\, alongside a Beethoven quartet that continues to resonate across centuries. It’s an evening designed to inspire discovery and celebrate the richness of the chamber music tradition. \nDon’t miss this unique musical experience with Cypress Ensemble.

SUMMARY:Crosstown Arts Film Series Special Event: Nosferatu with Live Score
DESCRIPTION:Sink your teeth into a Halloween-week classic on Thursday\, October 30\, 2025\, 7 pm at the Crosstown Theater. F.W. Murnau’s Nosferatu\, the shadow-soaked masterpiece that helped define horror on screen\, returns in a special presentation featuring a brand-new live score by General Labor. \nThe Memphis ensemble will perform an immersive\, modern accompaniment that threads eerie minimalism\, pulsing percussion\, and textural electronics through Murnau’s iconic imagery\, breathing new life into Count Orlok’s creeping silhouette and the film’s haunted coastal vistas. This is not a soundtrack you’ll find on streaming: it’s a one-night-only conversation between musicians and movie\, unfolding in real time on the big screen. \nWhether you’re discovering Nosferatu for the first time or revisiting it through fresh ears\, this live score transforms a silent-era landmark into a visceral\, present-tense experience\, perfect for the season. \nJoin us as the Crosstown Arts Film Series bridges cinema history and contemporary sound\, otherworldly\, atmospheric\, and absolutely in the spirit of Halloween. \nB/W\, silent with intertitles. Not rated. Approx. 90 min.

SUMMARY:Crosstown Arts Presents: Autumn Defense
DESCRIPTION:Autumn Defense \nThe Green Room @ Crosstown Arts \nFriday\, November 7\, 2025 \nDoors open at 7:00 pm | Show Starts at 7:30 pm \n$25 in advance (plus fees) | $30 at the door \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nAfter a ten-year break from the studio\, The Autumn Defense pick up right where they left off on their long-anticipated sixth album\, Here and Nowhere. Infusing the band’s breezy\, harmony-drenched take on Laurel Canyon with lush orchestration and psychedelic flourishes\, the collection is dreamy and impressionistic\, full of warm\, inviting tunes as beautiful as they are bittersweet. Like much of the group’s catalog\, it’s an album full of mystery and wonder\, a rich\, open-hearted work that nods to everything from Nick Drake and John Martyn to Carole King and David Crosby as it contemplates the passage of time\, reckoning with what we lose\, what we gain\, and who we become along the way. \nFounded by core duo John Stirratt and Pat Sansone—and now featuring longtime rhythm section James Haggerty and Greg Wieczorek—The Autumn Defense first took shape in New Orleans\, where the band recorded their 2001 debut\, The Green Hour. While the group has at times been pigeonholed as a Wilco side project (Stirratt is a founding member\, and Sansone joined around the release of 2004’s A Ghost Is Born)\, The Autumn Defense’s sound has always been decidedly more West Coast than alt-country\, drawing comparisons to The Beach Boys\, The Byrds\, and Love over the course of five critically acclaimed studio albums. NPR hailed the group’s “timeless pop songs\,” while Rolling Stone called their music “gorgeous” and “delightful\,” and the New York Times praised their delivery as “warm and radiant.”
