These works feature scenes with existing and non-existing figures from folklore and mythology sourced from the American South\, elsewhere\, and created. \nAhmad George is a painter and multimedia artist from Memphis\, Tennessee. They’ve shown at NADA Miami as well as national and international group and solo exhibitions.Through their work\, they explore the liminal space between reality\, mythology\, folklore\, and self. Their worldbuilding thins the veil of this world by mixing  imagery of the American South (mostly scenes from Tennessee and Mississippi) with local and sourced myths from different parts of the world. Oftentimes\, they use people from their own life to be the protagonists of these narratives. Major themes they explore in their paintings currently include generational history\,transformation\, consequence\, and spiritual alchemy. \n

The houses become more than just a residence\, but become individuals themselves. The shadows start to blur the line of where the walls stop and where a presence might begin. \nHave you ever touched a door knob and thought it felt like shaking someone’s hand? Instead of treating it like a utilitarian tool? \nOne can start to feel their identity fuse with the walls around them day after day. This new presence\, which we often call “home”\, silently witnesses all of our joys and sorrows\, and the passage of time. They are the only ones who have a deep understanding of our solitude and shared narratives. \nThese pieces are carved wood\, masked in layers of house paint\, and nailed together in a similar fashion as the places that house them. This is done to connect the viewer to the physicality and craftsmanship inherent in the creation of homes. \nNoah Thomas ​​Miller is Illinois-born but finds his home in Memphis. He works in multivalent mediums\, whether that be woodworking\, film\, sound installation\, or a combination of materials\, to preserve memory and tell stories. \nHis work is constantly deconstructing and reconstructing a scene to find its essence. It’s easier to recall a feeling than the details of an image. One can find that in most of his work — stripping the image of detail (or color) and isolating the tone of a scene to tell the narrative itself. \nHe attended Memphis College of Art and has continued his practice through work with museums\, film programs\, art institutions\, and most importantly at home.

DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents “But Then\, Suddenly\, I Was Looking From the Inside Out” by Coe Lapossy on the East Pop-Out Walls.\n \nThe East Pop-Out Walls at Crosstown Arts\nOn view through Sunday\, January 21\, 2024\nTickets: Free and open to the public \nThe first time Coe Lapossy heard someone talk about compartmentalizing their life\, so they could make all the separate and demanding things work together\, theyI were a kid watching a television interview with Jodie Foster. It was the typical interview question\, “How do you handle such a busy life? How do you accomplish all this?” Foster very nonchalantly explained that she just compartmentalizes everything. Lapossy remembers realizing that this was a completely unfamiliar way of being. They did not understand what Jodie was talking about\, and they did not believe they could live that way. But Then\, Suddenly\, I Was Looking From the Inside Out is about “no compartments.” Everything is mashing together in life all the time — and while Lapossy longs for stability and order — it’s all happening at once and they love how that feels — what that allows for. Not to be confused with multitasking\, this is a kind of nurtured chaos. \nThrough a resistance to the tenants of modernism\, Coe Lapossy centers erased histories and marginalized labor. They create work that revels in the subversive\, how it sneaks in and makes change\, how it works undetected because it must. They revisit artifacts of queerness wedged within a seemingly straight world\, choosing these references\, linking narratives from various times throughout history\, things forgotten\, erased\, messages that “flew under the radar.” With the reuse of these artifacts they create a meditation on what bodies we value\, how we memorialize\, and what/who survives under the conditions we create.

Formed in 2016 as a nod to the sound and visual flair prevalent early in careers of beloved Memphis stalwarts B.B. King and Bobby Bland\, the Love Light Orchestra is as much a manifestation of the current moment as it is a throwback to a bygone era of nightclubs packed to the brim with partygoerseager to take in an evening of down-home musicality with a touch of class. \nThe collective vision of trumpeter Marc Franklin\, guitarist Joe Restivo\, and vocalist John Németh has earned the ensemble favorable responses from the public and press alike. The Memphis Commercial Appeal noted the band’s immersive qualities\, transporting listeners to a pivotal scene in which jazz and blues maintained influence over Memphis’ soul burgeoning sound. Writer Bob Mehr lauded the band for “re-conjuring a sound and style that was dominant in Memphis\, and that would have a formative influence on the young artists who would come to stock the rosters of Stax Records and Hi Records in the decades to come.” \nCompletion of Leave the Light On\, the group’s studio debut\, reflects three-years of sheer determination to coordinate schedules of a group consisting of Memphis’ most in-demand artists\, in addition to navigating the unforeseen impact of a global health crisis on the entire music industry. This iteration’s performance will feature jazz pianist Keiko Matsui. \nKEIKO MATSUI\nKeiko who masters the delicate balance between career and motherhood (she has two daughters) feels an urgency to leave the world a better place for future generations. “I want to make a positive impact for children in this generation and the future. Through prayer and my music\, I hope to be able to increase more harmony on this planet.” Keiko succeeds in conjuring a harmonious affair on Euphoria. \n“Through prayer and my music\, I hope to be able to increase harmony on this planet.”- Keiko Matsui \nKIRK WHALUM\nSoulful\, passionate\, stirring…these are the words most often used to describe Kirk’s music. Forged from his Memphis\, Tennessee\, gospel roots and his 1980s initiation into the thriving Houston\, TX nightclub scene\, Kirk’s big\, rich tenor sound is unmistakably his. The ’80s were highlighted by Kirk’s stepping out of his blossoming sideman role and forming his own band. It was there that Kirk ultimately developed both his “voice” and songwriting in the crucible of the local club scene—especially at a rooftop club called Cody’s. It was also in Houston where jazz pianist Bob James “discovered” him and brought him on tour\, which led to five successful albums with Columbia Records\, including Cache\, Kirk’s first #1 album. As well\, Kirk and Bob received a Grammy nomination for their collaboration album\, Joined at the Hip. After moving to Los Angeles\, Kirk became an in demand session player for top artists like\, Barbara Streisand\, Al Jarreau\, Luther Vandross\, Larry Carlton\, Quincy Jones and most notably\, Whitney Houston\, amongst many others. It’s his sax heard on the mega-hit\, “I Will Always Love You.” Kirk soon followed that career high point with his phenomenal hit album released on Warner Bros. Records\, For You\, perhaps the most successful of over 25 solo recordings to date; others include his eclectic\, and much lauded\, Gospel According to Jazz series\, (Chapters 1\, 2\, 3 and 4). In addition to his many solo projects\, Kirk was also a member of the popular soul/jazz group\, BWB\, which features Kirk as the “W” of the group with Rick Braun (trumpet) and Norman Brown (guitar). \nKirk is the recipient of numerous awards and acknowledgements for his musical excellence including three Dove Award nominations\, an NAACP Image Award nomination and has won two Stellar Awards- Gospel music’s highest honor. A twelve time Grammy nominee\, Kirk won his first Grammy award (2011)for Best Gospel Song (“It’s What I Do”—featuring Lalah Hathaway) alongside life-long friend and gifted songwriter\, Jerry Peters.

That is\, if you consider a Grand Ole Opry debut at age 10\, called back to the famed stage a year later to perform with her hero and mentor Alison Krauss to be early. She played Carnegie Hall at 12; at 13 signed with Rounder Records and issued her debut\, Secrets\, and garnered the first of many nominations for Mandolin Player of the Year. She played the Kennedy Center at 16 and the next year became the first bluegrass musician to receive a Presidential Scholarship at the Berklee College of Music. As a 20-year-old\, Hull played the White House. \nIt’s only a two-hour drive to Nashville from her tiny hometown hamlet of Byrdstown\, Tennessee. Hull credits her family for paving the first few miles to Music Row. Her mother\, holding her as a toddler\, taught her to sing. She ran next door to hear Uncle Junior pick mandolin\, and listened intently to the church choir on Sundays. Her Christmas gift- a full-sized fiddle- proved too daunting. While waiting for a smaller replacement\, her father showed her some notes on the mandolin. Hull was hooked\, soon known as the eight-year-old wowing the locals at bluegrass jams. \nShe found inspiration in Krauss\, Ricky Skaggs\, and Sam Bush. And\, just as importantly\, affirmed her own sense of identity in the album covers of Rhonda Vincent\, the queen of bluegrass. She heard the words of her parents\, prepping her for life’s big moments yet to come\, repeatedly instilling the mantra: Hard work\, more than anything\, will get you somewhere. It certainly did. \nIn 2010\, Hull captured her first IBMA award for Recorded Event of the Year. She was shedding the prodigy tag\, turning virtuoso\, and releasing her second album\, Daybreak\, with seven of her own original compositions. In Byrdstown\, she hosted an eponymous annual bluegrass festival. \n“There’s a voice in the back of my head telling me to keep working\, to keep moving forward\,” Hull says. “You have to keep progressing and introducing new things.” \nBy 2016\, Hull had reached a more mature place in her life and in her art. She tapped legendary bluegrass musician Bela Fleck to produce her third album\, Weighted Mind. A departure from her opening pair of records that blended progressive elements with traditional structure\, Hull let go of whatever preconceptions existed- both hers and those of her audience- and birthed a Grammy-nominated masterpiece. \n“I created from a more vulnerable\, honest place by asking myself what kind of music will I make if I’m not at all concerned with genre\,” says Hull. “What do I want to say with my music? What do I want to feel when I stand onstage and sing these songs? I needed to have a deeper connection.” \nEnlisting bassist Ethan Jodziewicz (and Fleck on two cuts)\, and harnessing vocal contributions from Krauss\, Abigail Washburn\, and Rhiannon Giddens\, Hull trusted her foundation of influences to support this artistic leap. Months later she was taking home the Mandolin Player of the Year. After a near-decade of consecutive noms\, Hull broke that last glass ceiling\, becoming the first woman to win the prestigious title. Of all the numerous awards and achievements Sierra Hull has earned\, that one occupies a special place on the mantle. Then she took home a pair to join it\, winning again in 2017 and 2018. \nHull has maintained a rigorous touring schedule\, as well. Even when off the road\, she is frequently guesting with friends and legends\, joining such icons as the Indigo Girls\, Garth Brooks\, and Gillian Welch\, and performing at the Country Music Awards with Skaggs\, Brad Paisley\, and Marty Stuart. \nShe says she’s ready\, now\, for something new. Currently in the midst of work for the follow-up to Weighted Mind\, her next album will consist of all original songs. Beyond that\, there are tantalizing ideas she won’t divulge for collaborations and\, perhaps\, an all-instrumental record. There is a plan\, but not a timetable\, which is just fine. \n“I love playing music. It’s all I ever wanted to do. I don’t see it\, necessarily\, as a bad thing that I’m slow to make albums. I want my albums to be something I can be proud of.”

An endorsed artist for P. Mauriat saxophones\, The Boston Sax Shop and Key Leaves\, Adam began playing saxophone at the age of 11. Described by critic Howard Reich of The Chicago-Tribune as “a player for whom the word ‘prodigious’ was coined”\, by Peter Hum of the Ottawa Citizen as “a saxophonist who brings Donny McCaslin and Mark Turner to mind”\, and by Nate Chinen of The New York Times as “the sort of jazz musician who gets flagged early on as a promising talent and then hustles to meet every requirement for success”\, Larson has garnered numerous awards that distinguish him as one of the most promising artists of his generation. Upon graduating from high school in 2008\, Adam moved to New York City to pursue his BM and MM in Jazz Performance on full-scholarship from The Manhattan School\, finishing his studies in 2014. \nLarson has released seven albums; two for Outside In\, one for Ropeadope Records\, two under the Inner Circle Music label and two produced independently. Larson’s most recent record “With Love\, From Chicago”\, received a rare 4.5 Star rating from DownBeat magazine and was featured in JazzTimes Magazine\, among other national media outlets. \nLarson keeps an active schedule with his own groups and as a sideman\, having performed at several venues across the U.S. including The Green Mill\, The Jazz Standard\, Birdland\, The 55 Bar\, The Jazz Gallery\, The Blue Note\, The Village Vanguard\, Smalls\, Jazz at The Bistro\, The Jazz Estate\, The Jazz Showcase\, Dazzle\, Noce\, The Jewell and several others. \nMusic has allowed Adam to see more of the world than he once thought possible\, having toured Poland\, India\,Taiwan\, Holland\, and Germany as well much of the United States. Larson’s Trio received a South Arts “Jazz Road Touring Grant” in 2022 and In 2015 Larson’s quartet was selected as one of ten ensembles to tour on behalf of the U.S. State Department’s “American Music Abroad”program and toured Africa for 35 days visiting The Democratic Republic of Congo\, Senegal\, Benin and Ghana. \nBeyond maintaining an active touring and recording schedule\, Larson continues to be a sought after clinician and masterclass presenter and has been a guest at more than seventy-five Universities across the world. Appearances include visits to HKU Conservatory-Utrecht\, Temple University\, Yale\, Manhattan School of Music\, and University of North Texas among many others. Larson is currently on faculty at UMKC Conservatory where he teaches classes in the Arts Entrepreneurship program and previously taught jazz saxophone\, music business and pedagogy. In addition to his duties at UMKC\, Larson has a diverse private lesson studio of online students from the U.S. and abroad. \nAdam has authored 12 jazz etude books that have been sold in over 45 countries and States. He has created and released a successful online masterclass dedicated exclusively to developing great technique\, called “Lightning-Fast and Crystal- Clean”. He maintains an impressive portfolio of commissioned ensemble writing for school jazz ensembles\, having written more than thirty original works to date. Adam was commissioned by the Illinois Music Educators Association to compose the All-State composition for the 2020 convention\, where he directed the Honors Jazz Band. Larson has also directed the South Dakota All-State Jazz Combo. \nWith a vested interest in giving back\, Larson has also worked in various capacities with organizations that showcase exceptional young talent in the United States. Adam has served as a mentor for the Grammy Foundation and as an adjudicator for the Monterey Jazz Festival Next Generation Jazz Orchestra and YoungArts organization.

Choro is an enormously appealing musical style that originated in Brazil over 100 years ago and is now popular internationally. \n\n\n\n\nIn Brazil\, Choro das 3 has been featured on national television\, played for the president\, and played for huge audiences at national festivals. The band toured the US annually from 2013 to 2019\, playing concert venues\, festivals\, and universities from coast to coast. They’ve also toured internationally and have released 11 CDs. \nOf the three sisters in the band\, (family name Meyer)\, Corina plays flute and piccolo\, Lia plays acoustic 7-string guitar\, and Elisa\, who writes many of their tunes\, plays mandolin\, clarinet\, banjo\, piano\, and accordion. From the time of the band’s founding\, their father\, Eduardo\, played percussion. Tragically\, he died from Covid early in the pandemic. This is the band’s first US tour since the pandemic.

The Invaders touches on themes of race\, government surveillance and economic injustice. The film offers a unique perspective on the 1968 Memphis Sanitation Strike by emphasizing the role of resident youth in the movement\, as well as focusing on the function of poverty and economic disparity in Memphis. \nPresented in collaboration with the Stax Museum of American Soul Music. Her music is steeped in poetry and storytelling\, and she strives to create music that listeners can hear themselves in. Stop Making Sense stars core band members David Byrne\, Tina Weymouth\, Chris Frantz\, and Jerry Harrison along with Bernie Worrell\, Alex Weir\, Steve Scales\, Lynn Mabry\, and Edna Holt.
