SUMMARY:Crosstown Arts presents Willie Farmer / Ryan Lee Crosby & Grant Smith / Shaun Marsh & Lynn Greer
DESCRIPTION:The Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nThursday\, June 15\, 2023\nDoors at 7pm | Show at 7:30\nTickets: $15 advance | $20 at the door \nPurchase Tickets Here \nJoin Willie Farmer\, Ryan Lee Crosby & Grant Smith\, and Shaun Marsh & Lynn Greer for a special performance featuring the blues across time and space – music that crosses generations\, cultures\, and continents. \nWILLIE FARMER is living proof that Mississippi continues to produce deep blues. The 65-year-old guitarist is neither a soul modernist nor revivalist\, but simply a small town auto mechanic who’s never shaken his love for old school legends like Muddy\, Wolf and Lightnin’. \nA lifelong resident of tiny Duck Hill\, located in the hills east of the Delta\, Farmer grew up on the family farm. He first took up the acoustic guitar in his early teens\, and through picking cotton soon saved up enough money to buy an electric instrument. \nHe played for audiences at home and at school events\, and learned about blues and R&B mostly through listening to a powerful station out of Nashville. In his early ‘20s Farmer joined a loose knit band that played at juke joints across the area—in Duck Hill\, Grenada\, Kilmichael\, and down in the Delta in Greenwood and Charleston. He eventually tired\, though\, of the rough-and-tumble clubs where “people liked to fight like crazy.” \nFarmer eventually decided he wanted to get back into blues actively. In 2003 he helped found the annual Grassroots Blues Festival\, staged in a meadow outside Duck Hill. Through the event\, he befriended downhome blues players from across the state including Willie King and Leo Welch. \n“The Man From the Hill” marks the first time that he’s spent serious time in the studio. Recorded over multiple sessions at producer Bruce Watson’s Memphis based Delta-Sonic Sound\, Farmer enjoyed working in a North Mississippi Hill Country vein with Jimbo Mathus and session drummer George Sluppick. He even dipped back into gospel\, singing harmony together with Memphis’ Barnes Brothers. \nFor the past thirty years Farmer has run his own auto repair shop\, and hopes that the release of this record and associated touring will allow him to retire. “I’m trying to get out of that shop\, I’m tired of messing with those cars. It’s been a long time.” \nRYAN LEE CROSBY \nThe fingerstyle guitar maven\, songwriter and powerfully emotional performer blends echoes of traditional music from Mississippi\, Mali\, and India into compelling songs that speak from—and to—the heart. His music captures the timeless power of music from the Mississippi Delta\, refracted by influences of Hindustani slide guitar and Crosby’s own unique approach to the style. His songs resonate with a sound and spirit forged from his life as a traveling musician and his studies with masters of the Delta and Indian traditions. \n“Of all the world’s musical traditions\, the one that speaks to me most directly is the Bentonia style of Delta blues\,” Crosby relates. “Something I love about the blues is its timeless ability to express the entire range of the human experience: its brightest joys\, deepest sorrows and everything in between. By listening to the blues\, we can learn how to have compassion for ourselves and others. Its lessons are endless.” \n“With a riveting singing style and the compositional chops to pull off such searing sagas “Institution Blues” and “Down So Long” plus add new lyrics to the 19th century “Was It The Devil\,” Ryan Lee is the real deal. Recorded in Memphis by Bruce Watson of Fat Possum—the label famous for RL Burnside and Junior Kimbrough—it sounds unique\, proudly independent and like a relic from another time.” Mike Greenblatt – GOLDMINE Magazine \nSHAUN MARSH with LYNN GREER \nFrom an early age growing up in the south of England\, Shaun Marsh learned the power and potential of music through his mother\, a performing artist and soul singer in the sixties and seventies. Being introduced to early pop\, rock & roll\, R&B and soul had a profound inspiration on him. It wasn’t until he reached his forties that Shaun began to look back at the origins and true roots of the music that he’d been listening to most of his life. Late one night while tuning in to John Peel on the radio\, he heard “Hellhound On My Trail\,” by Robert Johnson. The raw emotion of that recording compelled him to immerse himself in the early pre war Blues. He began to develop the techniques for playing finger picking style Country and Delta blues from the recordings of the early pioneering musicians who paved the way. It was these rich and lonesome strands of storytelling that brought him to Memphis\, where he continues to study in the shadow of this powerful music that defines this city. His repertoire on solo acoustic guitar ranges from Robert Johnson to Charley Patton\, from Skip James to Big Bill Broonzy. Following the threads of the blues from Memphis he also gets inspiration from such greats as Johnny Cash\, Magic Sam & Otis Redding. His performances create an atmosphere of true emotion\, telling the stories in song of this great music that changed the sound of popular music throughout the world.

SUMMARY:MicroCinema: Tribute to Barbara Hammer
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts and Indie Memphis present MicroCinema: Tribute to Barbara Hammer.  \nCrosstown Theater\nWednesday\, June 14\, 2023\nDoors at 6:30 pm | Screenings begin at 7:00 pm\nTickets: Pay-What-You-Can \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nIn honor of the incredible experimental lesbian filmmaker\, Barbara Hammer\, Indie Memphis and Crosstown Arts are excited to bring this Tribute to Barbara Hammer for this month’s MicroCinema. A prolific filmmaker\, installation artist\, and pioneer of feminist and queer cinema for over 50 years\, Hammer’s work consistently and relentlessly explored the intimate experiences of lesbian relationships\, the erasure and censorship of queer history\, and the relationship between sex\, age\, and the body. \nNitrate Kisses (1992)\, her first feature-length work\, is a foundational queer classic that takes the shape of an experimental documentary exploring queer history and its erasure in the archives and the movies — something she would continue to explore in later work. Her short\, Audience (1982)\, provides us with an insight into her vibrant personality and poses questions about the relationship between the artist\, the art\, and the audience experience that we wonder about to this day. \nWe’re ecstatic to screen her work and celebrate her impact on experimental and queer cinema. \nMany thanks to Electronic Arts Intermix for this program! \nContent Advisory: This program does include depictions of explicit nudity. \n

SUMMARY:Crosstown Counterpoint: Blueshift Ensemble + Evan Williams
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Crosstown Counterpoint: Blueshift Ensemble + Evan Williams in the Central Atrium at Crosstown Concourse. \nCentral Atrium\nWednesday\, June 14\, 2023\nShow begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: Free \nREGISTER HERE \nSupported by an Arts Access grant from the Tennessee Arts Commission and ArtsMemphis\, Crosstown Arts presents the premiere of the commissioned work by Evan Williams\, “Crosstown Counterpoint” alongside Williams’ earlier works “Bodies Upon the Gears”\, “Amber Waves”\, and Terry Riley’s classic minimalist bop\, “In C.” \nAs the groundbreaking neared for Crosstown Concourse in 2017\, several Memphians young and old were interviewed to provide oral histories of the Sears Crosstown building and what the revitalization would do for the area. Taking inspiration from works such as Steve Reich’s Different Trains\, Crosstown Counterpoint uses these oral histories to tell the multi-generational story of this space\, and what it meant to the people of Memphis. Two antiphonal string quartets accompany the voices\, using the open space of the Central Atrium of Crosstown Concourse to bring this history to life. \nDrawing from inspirations as diverse as Medieval chant to contemporary pop\, the music of composer and conductor Evan Williams (b. 1988) explores the thin lines between beauty and disquieting\, joy and sorrow\, and simple and complex\, while often tackling important social and political issues. Williams’ catalogue contains a broad range of work\, from vocal and operatic offerings to instrumental works\, along with electronic music. \nBlueshift Ensemble is a Memphis-based contemporary chamber music ensemble dedicated to bringing artists and audiences together through artistic collaboration. By programming both new and existing classical repertoire alongside multi-genre collaborations\, Blueshift aims to connect a wider audience to today’s classical music. The ensemble draws upon Memphis’s uniquely diverse musical heritage by combining classical music with popular music genres such as rock\, blues\, and soul and featuring local musicians\, visual artists\, and composers.

SUMMARY:Darrius Strong: “The Artist”
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Darrius Strong: “The Artist” in The Green Room. \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nFriday\, June 16\, 2023\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: Free \n\n“The Artist” is a solo showcase performed by artistic director/choreographer Darrius Strong\, in which he touches on layers and humanity of the person behind the artist. For Strong\, movement is real and it acts as a language and sometimes as a therapeutic device. Overlapped with movement phrases\, “The Artist” will also showcase other routine devices he uses throughout his day that tie to the continuous work he does to heal trauma in his body — aspects of the work that are very much read\, true\, and relatable to the human experience for many. We are not just one-sides\, but we have many layers and dimensions to our identity. \nThis piece is a work in progress that Strong plans to explore and evolve throughout the year. \nDarrius Strong is a McKnight Fellow in residency at Crosstown Arts. He is a Twin Cities-based dancer\, choreographer\, and instructor. His dance company\, STRONGmovement\, uses the universal language of dance\, blending styles such as hip hop\, ballet\, modern\, and West African to tell stories related to society and humanity. Strong is a graduate of the University of Minnesota (BFA 2015) and is currently faculty at St. Paul Conservatory Performing Arts High School and director of the hip hop program at Eleve Performing Arts Center\, where he focuses on teaching dancers how to connect their identity to movement. His creative work has been chosen for the Walker Art Center’s Choreographers Evening\, and Rhythmically Speaking. \nThis residency is supported by Artist Communities Alliance’s (ACA) McKnight Artist Residencies Consortium. This partnership between ACA and the McKnight Foundation supports selected residency program partners in developing fair and just policies\, and provides McKnight Artist Fellows with residency opportunities at these partner programs. This consortium aims to support the development of residency environments where any artist can thrive.

SUMMARY:Peter Janson
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Peter Janson in The Green Room. \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nWednesday\, June 21\, 2023\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $15 in advance | $20 at the door \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nGrowing up in Boston Massachusetts\, Peter Janson listened to his father\, an accomplished amateur guitarist\, play solo guitar every day. Peter started playing by the age of seven\, and starting doing pop gigs at age 15. For the last twenty-five years he has performed in venues large and small\, much as a touring studio guitarist would – in a variety of styles; pop\, rock\, fusion\, folk\, Celtic\, classical\, and jazz. His sound is a melding of all these\, and it presents as crossover jazz fusion. \nHis newest release\, Getting To Here\, is an album of deft arrangements and nuanced improvisations that come from his soul. The music is a triumph in the face of the pandemic lockdown when the isolation had such a negative impact on him he nearly quit playing. Now growing in international recognition\, Peter signed a worldwide sub-publishing deal with SUPREME SONGS Limited (UK based) in October 2022. \nCome to a concert. Listen to his music. Hear Peter Janson\, a musician who couldn’t quit his love of music\, performing solo jazz guitar songs inspired by guitar legends like Joe Pass\, Earl Klugh\, and Jim Hall as well as contemporary players like Pat Metheny\, Kurt Rosenwinkel\, and Wolfgang Muthspiel.

SUMMARY:Pat Bianchi with the Ted Ludwig Trio
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents the Modern Masters Jazz Series: Pat Bianchi with the Ted Ludwig Trio in The Green Room. \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nTuesday\, July 11\, 2023\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $20 in advance | $25 at the door | $10 student tickets at the door \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nGrammy-nominated organist\, winner of DownBeat magazine’s 2016 rising star poll and Hot Housemagazine’s 2019 poll\, Pat Bianchi has established himself as one of the premier organists on the international scene today. His command of the instrument\, harmonic prowess\, rhythmic intensity and versatility are rivaled by few. Bianchi has had the honor of being a longtime member of jazz guitar icon Pat Martino’s trio and also performed with NEA Jazz Master and saxophone legend Lou Donaldson’s quartet for a number of years as well. \nHe has released eight CDs as a leader and is also a featured artist on over 30 recordings. Building on the success of his 2015 recording A Higher Standard\, his 2019 release In The Moment rose to #1 on the Jazzweek Radio Charts and features an array of guests including Pat Martino\, Kevin Mahogany\, Joe Locke\, Peter Bernstein\, Paul Bollenback\, Byron Landham\, Carmen Intorre Jr. Bianchi briefly steps away from his straight-ahead roots on his newest release (2021) Something To Say. \nBianchi\, who comes from a musically gifted family\, began playing organ at the age of 7\, after receiving a Farfisa Compact Duo organ as a Christmas gift. His grandfathers (Pat Bianchi – Saxophone\, and Richard Zona – Trumpet) along with his father (Nick Bianchi – Drums) all working musicians\, provided a great deal of support and guidance early in his musical development. Recognizing Pat’s continuing affinity for music\, his parents enrolled him in classical piano study. While still maintaining a strong interest in organ\, he was playing his first professional gigs by the age of 11\, eventually performing with dance bands around his hometown of Rochester\, NY. Bianchi’s interest shifted in his high school years as he began to also focus more on jazz piano. Enrolling in The Eastman School of Music’s preparatory program for piano and music theory\, Pat was also mentored by numerous musicians in the Rochester jazz scene\, eventually choosing to continue his studies at Berklee College of Music in Boston. Bianchi never lost sight of his love of Jazz Organ and since a B3 was still out of his reach\, he began spending more time on a smaller version of the famed instrument called a Hammond M100. With his passion and dedication\, (also not being able to play left hand bass on a Spinet organ) Bianchi taught himself to play bass lines solely with his foot pedals. It was shortly after this time that Bianchi had a chance encounter with his hero (and soon to be mentor) Joey DeFrancesco. This was the moment Pat knew that in time he would leave the piano behind for the Hammond B3. After graduating Berklee cum laude\, Bianchi secured the position as the house pianist at the famous El Chapultepec club in Denver\, CO. The Pec (as it is known to locals) often brought in guest artists giving Pat the opportunity to play with such greats as Red Holloway\, Dakota Staton\, Carl Fontana\, Javon Jackson\, Mark Elf\, Bud Shank\, Brad Leali\, Pete Christlieb\, and Conte Candoli. After being at the Pec for six nights a week for almost three years\, Pat became an important fixture on the Denver jazz scene. \nAt this time\, Bianchi decided to focus exclusively on the organ making his national debut as an organist\, appearing on two recordings as a member the Denver based organ trio\, 3osity. The national release of Art of The Jazz Organ Trio and the subsequent recording Tri-O-City brought Bianchi wider recognition and onto a larger stage as a rising star of the organ. \nMoving to NYC\, Bianchi quickly established himself in the competitive New York scene. At this time\, legendary saxophonist Lou Donaldson immediately took notice of the young organist. Bianchi then joined the faculty of the University of Colorado at Boulder Jazz Studies Program teaching piano\, theory\, and ensembles to undergraduate\, masters\, and doctoral students. During this time he recorded his first album as a leader\, East Coast Roots\, which features Mark Whitfield on guitar and Byron Landham on drums. At the same time\, Bianchi began working closely with drummer Ralph Peterson Jr. on collaborative projects\, including and co-leading The Unity Project (a tribute to organist Larry Young and his album Unity). \nUpon returning to New York City in June of 2008\, Pat officially joined The Lou Donaldson’s quartet in 2009. Continuing to play with Lou\, Bianchi also joined Pat Martino’s working trio in 2011 while taking on the responsibilities as musical director. Bianchi is featured on numerous recordings such as Tim Warfield’s Sentimental Journey\, a follow up to Warfield’s recording One For Shirley (on which he also appears) as well as guitarist Chuck Loeb’s release\, Plain and Simple. At this time Bianchi also continued to perform with drummer Ralph Peterson Jr.\, forging ahead with The Unity Project. Bianchi was featured\, recording much of this material on Peterson’s CD Outer Reaches. Soon after Bianchi released his second recording as a leader\, Back Home. This recording features Terell Stafford\, Ralph Peterson Jr.\, Wayne Escoffery\, Carmen Intorre Jr. and Gilad Hekselman. \nBianchi not only continues to collaborate\, tour and record with many well known musicians\, he is also very active in the educational front. Pat has been on faculty at Temple University (Philadelphia\, PA) and Queens College (NYC)\, and is currently on faculty at Berklee College of Music (Boston\, MA).

SUMMARY:Kafé Kirk: The Gospel According to Jazz Edition (SOLD OUT)
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Kafe Kirk: The Gospel According to Jazz Edition featuring Kirk Whalum\, Kevin Whalum\, and Keia Johnson. \nSunday\, July 16\, 2023\nCrosstown Theater\nBox office opens at 5 pm | Doors open at 5:30 pm\nShow begins at 6 pm\nTickets: SOLD OUT \n  \nJoin Grammy-winning saxophonist Kirk Whalum for Kafé Kirk\, an ongoing jazz series in Crosstown Theater featuring musical and spiritual collaborations with special guest artists. This iteration’s performance will feature Keia Johnson and Kevin Whalum. \nKEIA JOHNSON \n With over a decade of experience in the entertainment field; Keia has made a name for herself as the multifaceted artist that attacks each opportunity with gusto and her signature smile. Keia was born in San Antonio\, Texas but grew up all over the world in a military family. She listened to a wide range of artists growing up\, but it was the move to Memphis that helped her establish her sound and performance style. She has performed on some of the most iconic stages in Memphis (The Orpheum\, Cannon Center\, and festivals) and with some of the best talent Memphis has to offer\, like Justin Timberlake\, Wendy Moten\, The Bar-Kays\, and David Porter of Stax Records. Years later\, It was American Idol that served as the true catalyst for Keia to recognize who she was as an artist; the talent competition led her to Hollywood where “Miss Congeniality” wowed the judges for two seasons. Her audition performance of Celine Dion’s vocally rigorous “My Heart Will Go On” prompted guest judge and musical role model Mary J. Blige to simply declare: “She can sing!” In 2016\, the world seemed to open up for Keia as she travelled for three years with the BB King Allstar band on Holland America Cruise lines singing blues\, rock-and-roll\, jazz\, classic R&B\, and soul. She officially launched KJ Management\, an Entertainment Agency in 2021\, under which she had developed exclusive Memphis soul and jazz shows for riverboats. She gives private Vocal lessons to Artists & Students as well as artist development. She is currently writing/producing shows and musicals for regional theaters and stages. Make sure to keep up with her at XperiencEntertainment.com. \nKEVIN WHALUM \nKevin Whalum is best known for his stellar work with Kirk on his brother’s gospel series entitled\, Kirk Whalum\, The Gospel According To Jazz\, Chapters 1-4. \nChapter One was released in 1998 to critical acclaim\, and it put Kevin on everyone’s radar with his medley take on the Negro spirituals\, Wade In The Water/Motherless Child. It broke new ground in gospel. No one had tried anything that daring vocally in the genre previously. When he and Kirk performed the song later that year on the Stellar Awards broadcast\, the audience gave them a standing ovation. That was a pivotal moment. “Yeah\, that was special. I knew I was in front of some gospel purists who believe gospel should be one thing and one thing only\, but I reject the notion that praise for the Almighty has anything to do with a certain group of chords\, \nor a certain rhythmic pattern. Gospel is defined as the good news\, and as long as that is what fills my heart as I perform\, that is what will exude from me as I stand before God’s children anywhere in the world; in churches or nightclubs. They will feel me if they allow themselves to\, and aren’t too busy judging me because I sound a little different than what they consider gospel. If you love Jesus as I do\, you will feel me.”If Chapter 1 was Kevin’s introduction to gospel music fans\, then\, Chapter 2 was the \nsolidification of his presence. That release spawned the remake of an old Johnny “Guitar” Watson classic called\, I Wanna TaTa Ya\, Baby from the 1970s. Kirk has always left Kevin alone to choose the songs he wanted to record on each volume. “Kirk trusts me to provide him with solid ideas for covers\, so I said we should take that song and rename it I Wanna TaTa Ya\, Jesus. Our ‘thing’ is to take established hits from artists who didn’t necessarily write them for a gospel audience\, and flip them on their heads\, so I rewrote the lyric to change TaTa\, Ya to mean Thank Ya\, and boom…people loved it. That song was released in 2003\, and yet it is still requested everywhere from Dallas to Tokyo\, and from Stockholm to Cape Town.”Chapter 3 is responsible for bringing in the R&B fans among the Whalum brothers’ audience. For this live recording\, Kevin chose a song by the late Luther Vandross called\, Make Me A Believer. He would be joined on it by the now three-time Grammy winner\, Lalah Hathaway. The song was a runaway hit\, and was nominated for a Stellar Award for best video in 2008. Again\, Kevin rewrote the original lyric to suit its new purpose\, and found massive critical and commercial success. “Lalah and I are good friends\, and we had an absolute blast singing together. She’s such a singular talent. I knew it would do well\, although I had no idea it would do \nwhat it eventually did.”Chapter 4 is the latest installment in the series\, and it promises to be as noteworthy as the previous three. Kevin now has three solo albums under his belt: the self-produced solo debut\, Timetable (2002); the George Duke-produced\, One Life To Love (2008); and the new self-produced\, I Live For You (2016). Although Kevin eschews any effort to force him into a category or genre’\, he freely admits to defining himself as “primarily a jazz vocalist who just happens to be a Christian.” He exhorts\, “I hope I never agree to be just one thing. A true artist never wants that. I have been—and will remain—free to explore the musical universe. There’s too much out here to stay locked into one soundscape forever. Music is big\, but Jesus is infinitely bigger. I want to touch his face with everything he puts in my heart to do. I hope people find my new record\, I Live For You\, refreshing\, and dare I say it\, groundbreaking.” \nKIRK WHALUM \nSoulful\, passionate\, stirring…these are the words most often used to describe Kirk’s music. Forged from his Memphis (Tennessee) gospel roots and his 1980‘s initiation into the thriving Houston\, Texas nightclub scene\, Kirk’s big\, rich tenor sound is unmistakably his. The ’80s were highlighted by Kirk’s stepping out of his blossoming sideman role and forming his own band. It was there that Kirk ultimately developed both his “voice” and songwriting in the crucible of the local club scene––especially at a rooftop club called Cody’s. It was also in Houston where jazz pianist Bob James “discovered” him and brought him on tour\, which led to five successful albums with Columbia Records\, including Cache\, Kirk’s first #1 album. As well\, Kirk and Bob received a Grammy nomination for their collaboration album\, Joined at the Hip. After moving to Los Angeles\, Kirk became an in demand session player for top artists like\, Barbara Streisand\, Al Jarreau\, Luther Vandross\, Larry Carlton\, Quincy Jones and most notably\, Whitney Houston\, amongst many others. It’s his sax heard on the mega-hit\, “I Will Always Love You.” Kirk soon followed that career high point with his phenomenal hit album released on Warner Bros. Records\, For You\, perhaps the most successful of over 25 solo recordings to date; others include his eclectic\, and much lauded\, Gospel According to Jazz series\, (Chapters 1\, 2\, 3 and 4). In addition to his many solo projects\, Kirk was also a member of the popular soul/jazz group\, BWB\, which features Kirk as the “W” of the group with Rick Braun (trumpet) and Norman Brown (guitar).Kirk is the recipient of numerous awards and acknowledgements for his musical excellence including three Dove Award nominations\, an NAACP Image Award nomination and has won two Stellar Awards- Gospel music’s highest honor. A twelve time Grammy nominee\, Kirk won his first Grammy award (2011) for Best Gospel Song (“It’s What I Do”––featuring Lalah Hathaway) alongside life-long friend and gifted songwriter\, Jerry Peters.

SUMMARY:The Crosstown Arts Film Series presents: FEMALE TROUBLE
DESCRIPTION:The Crosstown Arts Film Series presents Female Trouble at Crosstown Theater. \nJohn Waters / 1974 / 97 minutes / Rated R\nTickets: $5 at the door\nDoors at 6:30 p.m. | Films begin at 7:00 p.m. (sharp!) at Crosstown Theater \nGlamour has never been more grotesque than in Female Trouble\, which injects the Hollywood melodrama with anarchic decadence. Divine\, director John Waters’ larger-than-life muse\, engulfs the screen with charisma as Dawn Davenport\, the living embodiment of the film’s lurid mantra\, “Crime is beauty\,” who progresses from a teenage nightmare hell-bent on getting cha-cha heels for Christmas to a fame monster whose egomaniacal impulses land her in the electric chair. Shot in Waters’ native Baltimore on 16 mm\, with a cast drawn from his beloved troupe of regulars\, the Dreamlanders (including Mink Stole\, David Lochary\, Mary Vivian Pearce\, Edith Massey\, and Cookie Mueller)\, this film—the director’s favorite of his work with Divine — comes to life through the tinsel-toned vision of production designer Vincent Peranio and costume designer/makeup artist Van Smith. An endlessly quotable fan favorite\, Female Trouble offers up perverse pleasures that never fail to satisfy. \nThe Crosstown Arts Film Series showcases a diverse collection of independent\, international\, historically significant\, artistic\, experimental\, cult\, underground\, and documentary features.

SUMMARY:The Crosstown Arts Film Series presents: CHAMELEON STREET
DESCRIPTION:The Crosstown Arts Film Series presents Chameleon Street at Crosstown Theater. \nWendell B. Harris Jr. / 1990 / 94 minutes / Rated R\nTickets: $5 at the door\nDoors at 6:30 p.m. | Films begin at 7:00 p.m. (sharp!) at Crosstown Theater \nWinner of the Grand Jury Prize at the 1990 Sundance Film Festival — yet criminally under-seen for over three decades — Chameleon Street recounts the improbable but true story of Michigan con man Douglas Street\, the titular “chameleon” who successfully impersonated his way up the socioeconomic ladder by posing as a magazine reporter\, an Ivy League student\, a respected surgeon\, and a corporate lawyer. Elevated by a dexterous performance and daring direction from multi-hyphenate actor-writer-director Wendell B. Harris Jr.\, the film pins a lens on race\, class and performance in American identity\, which has lost none of its relevance. At once piercingly funny and aesthetically mischievous\, Chameleon Street is a “lost masterpiece of Black American cinema” (BFI) long overdue to take its rightful place in the independent film canon. \nThe Crosstown Arts Film Series showcases a diverse collection of independent\, international\, historically significant\, artistic\, experimental\, cult\, underground\, and documentary features.

SUMMARY:The Crosstown Arts Film Series presents: FIVE EASY PIECES

Moving in its simplicity and gritty in its textures\, Five Easy Pieces is a lasting example of early 1970s American alienation. \nThe Crosstown Arts Film Series showcases a diverse collection of independent\, international\, historically significant\, artistic\, experimental\, cult\, underground\, and documentary features.
