DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents “A Lifting of the Veil”: A Winter Solstice Celebration with The Pop Ritual\, with Corrina Repp in the Green Room. \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nWednesday\, December 21\, 2022\nDoors at 7 p.m. | Show at 7:30 p.m.\nTickets: $20 | $15 in advance \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nForming in Memphis\, Tennessee\, in the late summer of 2014\, The Pop Ritual employed an influence of Nine Inch Nails and Ministry’s industrial determination with the psyche-pop sensibilities of Massive Attack to release their first demo—Weak Species—in 2015. The next year was spent establishing live modes locally and on the road in tandem with writing 2017’s Perinde ac Cadaver—a 50-minute self-released endeavor to harness industrial aggression and ambient dynamics. \nAt the end of 2019\, the trio worked with Portuguese/Memphis label Thisco Records (home of such legendary artists as Jarboe and Merzbow) to release It Sheds Again—a 6-track dive into industrial psyche-punk that details evolution amid solipsistic self-destruction both socially and personally. The album has been reviewed as being an “industrial punk cataclysm” with a “rich and grandiose production” [Destroy//Exist 2020]. \nIn light of a canceled US tour\, The Pop Ritual spent the pandemic making progress in new material as well as re-interpretations of their previous works. 2022 includes a return to touring\, the release of new singles\, and a live retrospective in celebration of the Winter Solstice. \nThe Pop Ritual in their current form is Colin Wilson\, Scott Nivens\, and Michelle Karl with special guest Aaron Rude.

Kortland could be seen in productions of The Wiz; AIDA; Raisin; and Porgy&Bess at the Hattiloo Theatre. In 2019\, Kortland traveled to Milan\, Italy where he performed the Fats Waller musical Ain’t Mis Behavin’. he originated the role of Dustin in the developmental production of May We All : A New Country Musical at Playhouse on the Square. At Theatre Memphis\, Kortland’s credits include CATS\, Hello\, Dolly!\, and most recently\, the lead role of Sky Masterson in Guys & Dolls. \nWith a sold-out show at The Green Room at Crosstown Arts in 2020\, Kortland is continuing to see and occupy a unique niche in the world of soft jazz and R&B/Soul music. Kortland released his EP A Love Letter; a collection of songs including\, “Can We Go [Love’s Paradise]”\, “C’est La Vie”\, and “The Limit”; all of which have garnered favorable local radio play on various stations. Formed in 2009\, Star and Micey has toured the US and Canada to play for a select crowd of die hard fans. Called “Tennessee’s Number One Band” by Paste Magazine in 2016 the group has continued to stay humble and live life on their terms. Having never broken up even once\, their relationship onstage is just as genuine offstage. \nLinktree : https://linktr.ee/starandmicey \nJeff Hulett \nFrom the outside\, Jeff Hulett might seem like a late-blooming guitarist and songwriter. But if you ask any of his fellow musicians they’ll tell you he was writing songs and playing music long before he put pen to paper or strummed a chord. \nIn fact\, his first love was not guitar\, but drums. He bought his first kit\, a used Maxx kit at a consignment store in ’96 after watching Fascist Frank & the German Brigade perform at the historic Antenna Club. A memorable Christmas indeed. \nHis sick beats landed him in the band Snowglobe. Over his many years with this Memphis-based institution\, Hulett regularly contributed melodies\, lyrics\, and arrangements to many of the tunes in their prolific cannon. You can even hear a few of his originals in their discography. \nDuring his long tenure with Snowglobe\, Hulett continued to hone his own voice and develop his own creative projects. He began playing guitar more\, and writing his own lyrics. This dedication and passion led to his collaboration with Leah Keys in the band Me & Leah. They released an eponymous and beautiful CD in 2016 featuring nine original folk tunes. Then in 2019\, Me & Leah added Jonathan Schallert to the mix to record and partially release a digital copy of their forthcoming 7 inch Most of Your Life. Both albums were engineered by accomplished mainstays Toby Vest and Pete Mathews of High/Low and Andrew McCalla\, respectively. \nBut it was when the pandemic struck that Hulett really hit his stride as a songwriter. All alone and with nowhere to go\, using an old version of Garageband\, he started creating original tracks and collaborating with more and more musicians\, writers\, and other creators. He was one of the first artists in Memphis—or even the world—to give a voice to our collective feelings when he released his album Safe @ Home with Jacob Church early in the pandemic. That record—a seven-song exploration of the new normal we were all just beginning to live—resonated around the globe. It even landed a spot on The English Show\, a weekly podcast out of Basel\, Switzerland. \nThen\, after going on to release two solo albums on Small Batch Records\, Hulett reconnected with old friends Melissa Goodwin and Adam Poor. They formed the band Restless Townies. Their first album\, Miles Away\, released in April 2021\, and the trio has a new full length album on the way. In this outfit\, all players write and contribute to each other’s songs. \nHe’s also formed his own solo band with Jacob Church\, Jonathan Schallert\, Adam Poor\, and Lehman Sammons. They recorded a 45 at Sun Studios in June which will be out in early 2022. Both songs are further explorations into the storytelling style Hulett continues to live into. \nAs you can see\, Hulett has an endless well of positive energy and creative spirit. The event promises to be a unique and intense journey into sound beyond the scope of perceived reality. \nKhari James Wynn is an American guitarist and recording artist from Memphis\, Tennessee. He is best known for his work in the jazz-rock genre as well as with American hip hop group\, Public Enemy. \nKhari Wynn was born in Boston\, Massachusetts\, son of acclaimed music critic/writer Ron Wynn. He was considered a musical prodigy and possessed and exhibited innate natural musical ability. As a child\, Wynn lived directly across the street from Willie Mitchell’s Royal Studios. At the age of fourteen he began to play electric guitar in the Memphis area for Dominion and Crashpattern in the metal genre\, and for St. Andrews AME Church in the gospel genre. Wynn entered the 1999 National Jimi Hendrix Competition at B.B. Kings in Memphis\, Tennessee\, and placed second with the song “Have You Ever Been To Electric Ladyland”. \nAt the age of eighteen\, Khari Wynn was employed by Carnival Cruise Lines as a staff musician. \nIn 2001 Wynn began recording and rehearsing with 7th Octave\, a group assembled by Professor Griff of Public Enemy. The following year\, Wynn wrote and recorded electric guitar tracks for Public Enemy’s Revolverlution. After four years of touring\, Wynn wrote and recorded again on Public Enemy’s album New Whirl Odorj and in 2007 on the album How You Sell Soul to a Soulless People Who Sold Their Soul? \nKhari Wynn established the jazz fusion band Solstice and released the debut album Exploration = Discovery independently in Memphis in 2004 with subsequent releases in 2005 and 2007. \nIn 2004\, Wynn toured alongside Stax recording artist\, Shirley Brown. \nAfter James Brown’s passing in late 2006\, Wynn was approached to play guitar on the James Brown Tribute Tour in 2007 which featured him alongside music legends Bootsy Collins and Clyde Stubblefield. He toured with the tribute band for much of 2007 and early 2008. \nIn 2007 Wynn began regularly performing as a bass player with saxophonist Hope Clayburn\, a musician who has been featured with such acts as Allman Brothers Band\, James Brown\, Gov’t Mule\, Maceo Parker\, Soulive\, DJ Logic\, and North Mississippi AllStars. \nStarting in 2008\, Khari Wynn was the working bass player with singer/songwriter Valerie June during the time she was featured on MTV’s $5 Cover\, a reality show created and produced by director Craig Brewer. \nWynn has also served since 2008 as a bass player for the Bluff City Backsliders\, led by Jason Freeman\, an artist with various credits including work performed on soundtrack of the film Black Snake Moan. \nIn 2011\, after a decade with the group\, Wynn became the Music Director for Public Enemy. \nDavid Collins is a Memphis based multi-instrumentalist\, composer\, and arranger. He has recorded music with artists such as Frog Squad\, Syrrup\, Rodrick Duran and the Big Sky band\, Talibah Safiya\, Agori Tribe\, The Burners\, Jareef Greene\, Jupiter Sky Fish and Neptune’s Army\, Misterioso Africano\, New Saturn Collective\, and more. In 2016\, Collins received a B.A. of music in Jazz and Studio Performance from the University of Memphis where he studied with Joe Restivo\, Tim Goodwin\, Jack Cooper\, and Sam Shoup. He took courses in arranging and played in big band\, jazz combos\, and percussion ensembles. Brooks utilizes his superb technical abilities to play bass\, rhythm\, and melody simultaneously and surpass the borders of conventional genres. He merges hauntingly beautiful compositions\, country rhythms\, and jazzy harmonies with funky licks into his very own art form — sometimes delivered with a punch\, sometimes with a smile. \nIn addition to worldwide recognition as a performer\, Brooks is regarded as an educated\, experienced\, knowledgeable teacher of fingerstyle guitar lineage\, instructing students from the traditional to the contemporary\, keeping the legacy of fingerstyle alive and well. He is currently an Assistant Professor in the Guitar Department at Berklee College of Music in Boston\, MA.  \nBrooks was born in Eugene\, Oregon\, in 1989. Seeing Buster B. Jones perform at a festival near his home town became a life-changing experience for the kid from the sticks. Just eleven years old\, he was immediately inclined to pick up the guitar. Soon\, the world-renowned fingerstyle virtuoso and instructor dedicated his spare time to introducing his new fan into the secrets of the fretboard\, and after six months of lessons the natural talent performed his first show with his mentor. \nWhen Buster B. Jones took him under his wings\, Brooks began playing high-profile gigs such as the Nokie Edwards Festival\, the NAMM Show in Anaheim\, the Montreal Jazz Festival\, and the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield\, among others. By the time he was a teenager he had become the youngest endorsee of Godin Guitars and traveled to several states and foreign countries to perform. Brooks went on to play on Garrison Keillor’s National Public Radio classic “A Prairie Home Companion” in 2004\, where he won first place in a talent competition for 12 to 20 year old participants. \nIn recent years\, while still appearing regularly at prestigious events like the Chet Atkins Appreciation Society (CAAS) Convention in Nashville\, Brooks focussed on perfecting his craft\, soaking up new tunes and styles and techniques as well as blending them into his own groovy and soulful original music. He entered the “Yamaha Six String Theory Guitar Competition”\, which drew participants from more than 40 countries all over the world. Brooks was invited to perform in the finals at the Broad Stage in Los Angeles in March 2010. A star-studded jury\, including Steve Lukather and Lee Ritenour\, eventually chose him as winner of the country category and second place winner overall. \nAlthough he is deeply rooted in the powerful tradition of the genre\, founded by the likes of Merle Travis\, Jerry Reed\, Thom Bresh\, and Buster B. Jones\, Brooks also draws inspiration from the elegant mastery of the legendary Chet Atkins and other phenomenal players. His own compositions and arrangements have even been compared to fingerstyle jazz champions Lenny Breau and Earl Klugh. Now\, as energy and maturity come together\, this young man is ready to step out of his mentors’ shadows and electrify the world with the sheer acoustic beauty his fingers create\, when touching a set of strings.

DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents the opening reception for “Summer in Shanghai” by Janaye Brown. \nNovember 18\, 2022\n6-8 p.m.\nCrosstown Arts Screening Room\nFree and open to the public \nIn June 2020\, the tropical rainy season cast a shadow over the city of Shanghai. Unfazed by the extreme weather\, e-bikers continued riding through the pouring rain. Day after day\, their ponchos provided protection from the elements while the fabric billowed in the wind. Life must go on. This visual of commuters-cum-knights was the starting point for what became Summer in Shanghai\, a three-part video series of meditations on a unique summer in China’s largest metropolis. \nWhile many cities around the world struggled to find a sense of normalcy during the summer of 2020\, Shanghai was functioning. With low case numbers\, masks came off\, health codes ceased to be scanned and the city vibrated as it once had. When the rain let up it was a good time to get out and connect with others\, because no one was sure what the fall would bring. \nIntent on minimizing the distance between herself and her surroundings\, Brown shot familiar spaces near her home. Her camera captured everyday moments while helping to initiate conversations. Utilizing the format of an essay film\, a voice over written and performed by Brown carries through each video\, sharing personal stories\, histories and reflections about the season and this particular period of time. \nPortraits of a rainy street in the Former French Concession\, ships on the Huangpu River and people in Fuxing Park\, culminate in Summer in Shanghai\, a series about finding connections during uncertain times. \nJanaye Brown (b. 1987 San Jose\, California; based in Berlin\, Germany) makes work that explores perception of time\, fragmented narratives and the unseen. She has exhibited at venues and film festivals\, including New York City’s Studio Museum Harlem\, Wassaic Project\, Wassaic\, NY\, Anthology Film Archives\, New York\, NY\, the Dallas Video Fest\, The Banff Centre in Alberta\, Canada and Shulamit Nazarian in Los Angeles. Her residencies include the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture\, Madison\, ME; Fiskars AiR\, Fiskars\, Finland; the Bruce High Quality Foundation University\, New York\, NY\, and Crosstown Arts\, Memphis\, TN among others. Brown received an MFA in Studio Art from the University of Texas at Austin in 2013 and her BA in Cinematic Arts and Technology from California State University Monterey Bay in 2010. Brown resided in China from 2018 to 2021.

DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents the opening reception for “Mending in a State of Abundance” by Katrina Perdue. \nNovember 18\, 2022\n6-8 p.m.\nCrosstown Arts Galleries\nFree and open to the public \n“Mending in a State of Abundance” explores the emotional and physical labor of repair\, offering an alternative response to the modern realities of material excess. Through slowly mending both found and personal objects by hand\, textile artist Katrina Perdue investigates connections and relationships between sentimental and material worth\, surplus and enough\, holding on and letting go. \nThroughout the exhibition\, damaged objects repaired with colorful threads emphasize and celebrate worn areas — not only to preserve and restore\, but also to offer a renewed sense of value\, appreciation\, and usefulness. Using darning techniques in traditional and nontraditional ways\, stitching serves as a visual representation of mending as an act of care. To fix something — to make it whole again — is an act of healing. \nExtending the life of any object is also a significant gesture towards a more sustainable existence. Displayed alongside the carefully mended pieces are all too familiar scenes of excess — piles of handmade quilts in need of repair\, mass quantities of unwanted clothing bundled in bales like harvest crops. This visual interplay of abundance and scarcity calls into focus the paradox of fixing things in a culture of mass consumerism and disposability. \nFrom emotional repairs like the artist’s own jeans heavily patched with layers of her late father’s clothing\, to a cracked plastic garden tote pulled from the garbage and stitched back together\, “Mending in a State of Abundance” is about seeing the potential in worn-out everyday objects. Through repair\, we can rethink consumption and imbue our own value on possessions and resources. As we navigate the vicissitudes of life\, piecing together broken materials can also make a way forward feel tangible — one thread\, one stitch\, one step at a time. \nKatrina Perdue is a textile artist and educator living and working in Memphis\, Tennessee. Her love for hand stitching has grown over the past twenty years from first learning machine sewing\, quickly followed by hand knitting\, and most recently to a full time studio practice focusing on the art and impact of mending and repair. DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents the opening reception for “Those Who Hold Dominion Here” by Sarah Elizabeth Cornejo. \nNovember 18\, 2022\n6-8 p.m.\nCrosstown Arts Galleries\nFree and open to the public \n“Those Who Hold Dominion Here” by Sarah Elizabeth Cornejo takes inspiration from serpents in Incan Mythology\, and Southern snakes to create a liminal space at the center of the earth presided over by deities capable of transgressing the boundary between this subterranean spiritual realm and our current lived reality. After the violence of our present\, portals on the walls reminiscent of black holes observe and allow entry and exit to the space. Observing through these windows our human actions on earth\, these yonic\, serpentine deities rise encrusted from the deepest earth\, unknowable\, and as guides responsible for the passage of knowledge. Bringing humanity to a negotiation of human time on earth\, they facilitate the decision to exit the space through another portal\, on to an unknown world to come\, or the possibility of complete non-existence. \nSarah Elizabeth Cornejo is an interdisciplinary artist based in Memphis\, Tennessee. She is a co-founder of BASEMENT\, a provisional artist-run space in Chapel Hill\, North Carolina\, where she was also a co-curator from 2019-2022. Her work has been shown throughout the eastern United States and internationally including the Mint Museum\, Ackland Art Museum\, Duke University\, and Field Projects among others. She received her MFA in Interdisciplinary Studio from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill\, and her BA in Studio Art and English Literature from Davidson College. She was a 10-month artist-in-residence at Crosstown Arts (2021) and is an upcoming artist-in-residence at the McColl Center (2023). She was a 2021 New Public Sculpture Fellow with the UrbanArts Commission in Memphis\, and a 2021 recipient of TriStar Arts’ inaugural Current Art Fund project grant. She was awarded the 2022 Tennessee State Fellowship through the Southern Prize and State Fellowship Program\, and was the finalist for the Southern Prize.

Gillespie died in 1993\, and Cherry released his first recording as a leader\, ‘First Take’ (Groovin’ High). That same year\, Ed recorded with Paquito D’Riveras’ small group which recorded “Havana Cafe” (Chesky Records). Ed also worked with composer/saxophonist Henry Threadgill for two years and recorded three cds with Henry’s ‘Very Very Circus’ group. \nIn 1995\, Cherry released his second project as a solo artist\, entitled A Second Look (Groovin’ High Records). During that same period Ed worked with Hammond organist John Patton recording three critically acclaimed CDs with Patton’s quartet — ‘Blue Planet Man’\, ‘Minor Swing’ and ‘This ones for Jah’ (DIW). From 1997 to 1998\, Cherry worked in Roy Hargrove’s “Crisol” Latin jazz band\, which performed in Havana\, Cuba. During this same period\, he also worked with baritone saxophonist\, Hamiett Bluiett\, recording Bluiett’s CD ‘With Eyes Wide Open’ on Justin-Time records. In 2001\, Cherry toured Europe for the first time with his own group. He also released his CD\, ‘The Spirit Speaks’ on the Canadian Justin Time Records label\, inspired by the great jazz organist Jimmy Smith with whom he had also recently worked. Ed was asked to perform at the ‘Vodaphone Madarao Jazz festival’ in 2002 in Madarao\, Japan\, with his quartet featuring trumpeter Jon Faddis. \nMore recently\, Ed toured with the great Hammond organist Dr. Lonnie Smith\, recording one critically acclaimed CD\, ‘In The Beginning’ on Pilgrimage Records in 2012. \nCurrently Ed has a brand new second recording released on Posi-Tone Records. Sadberry’s late grandfather and unsung hero of the Civil Rights Movement\, L. Alex Wilson. Wilson’s work as an editor and journalist changed the world through covering pivotal Civil Rights events including the lynching of Emmett Till\, the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the desegregation of Central High School by the Little Rock 9\, the last of which played a part in Wilson’s transformation into a martyr. In this concert\, Adam intertwines articles that he collected from the archives of the Tri-State Defender\, Wilson’s newspaper in Memphis\, Tennessee\, with music that contextualizes the humanity and inhumanity of the stories. \nAdam will be joined on stage by pianist Dr. Artina McCain and clarinetist Dr. Andre Dyachenko. \nThis programming is made possible in part thanks to an Organizational Development Fund grant from New Music USA.

Join us on this special night to uplift the songwriting community and get a sneak peek of “With Love\, Alexis Jade.” \nAbout Alexis Jade: \nAlexis Jade\, simply put\, is an old soul with a new sound. Her relationship with music was cultivated with her grandmother as they sang together on the front porch. During Alexis’s freshman year of college\, she began to seriously pursue a career in music. In the fall of 2021\, Alexis signed to Blue Tom Entertainment at the University of Memphis to release her first solo single\, “Return to Sender.” \nFollowing its success\, Alexis recorded and self-produced her debut EP at Easley & McCain\, a local Memphis studio. Alexis remembers the unwavering\, fearless trailblazers who carved a path for women in country music while bringing a new sound to the time old tales of heartbreak and loss. \nAlexis Jade’s debut EP\, “With Love\, Alexis Jade” will be out on all platforms Friday\, November 18. \nAbout Rachel Maxann: \nRachel Maxann is a diverse vocalist hailing from Memphis\, Tennessee. Rachel has had the pleasure of being able to move to different areas in the world and perform. Each new space has allowed her to grow in a new way while experimenting with different styles in every location. Rachel’s genre is self-described as Post-Modern Folk and Vintage Indie-Rock with a dash of blues and soul. \nRachel’s musical accomplishments range from performing alongside Valerie June on her Moon and Stars Tour\, to performing at festivals around the country. Growing up as a classical pianist\, she developed an appreciation for the intricacy and beauty of music at an early age; she began writing in 2019\, and has since released an EP (Silencer\, 2020)\, three more singles\, and her debut full-length album (The Frost\, 2021). Her music is steeped in poetry and storytelling\, and she strives to create music that listeners can hear themselves in. \nPulling influence from folk\, rock\, indie\, and classical genres\, Kelsey’s music stands firmly in a captivating blend of styles. Her songs are deeply\, thoughtfully crafted\, and her voice is rooted in artful intentionality. \nKelsey’s debut full-length album\, “The Frost”\, is out everywhere now.

Their songs pull heavily on improvisation within loose structures\, creating a psychedelic\, avant-garde jazz sound. \nThe group curates and arranges songs from artists such as Thelonious Monk\, Erik Satie\, and Horace Silver\, and bandleader David Collins composes eclectic\, original music. Overall\, Frog Squad gently defies the standards of what defines “good music” by composing song templates with experimental elements. In autumn of 2019\, Frog Squad released Solar System in Peabody\, a full-length work funded by the UrbanArts Commission. The Memphis Flyer called it “one of the most incredible pieces of music that came across our threshold this year.”

DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents NATIVES and NORTH BY CURRENT at Crosstown Theater. \nFree and open to the public\nDoors at 6:00 p.m.\, and films begin at 6:30 p.m. in Crosstown Theater. \nTwo films will be screened\, with a brief Q&A with the artists after the screening. \nIn Natives\, a short film by fall session artist in residence R Jason Rawlings\, two years after Hurricane Katrina\, a claims adjuster returns home to The Delta to little fanfare. \nIn fall session artist in residence Angelo Madsen Minax’s feature-length film North by Current\, after the inconclusive death of his young niece\, the filmmaker returns to his rural Michigan hometown\, preparing to make a film about a broken criminal justice system. Instead\, he pivots to excavate the depths of generational addiction\, Christian fervor\, and trans embodiment. Lyrically assembled images\, decades of home movies\, and ethereal narration form an idiosyncratic and poetic undertow that guide a viewer through lifetimes and relationships. Like the relentless Michigan seasons\, the meaning of family shifts\, as Madsen\, his sister\, and his parents strive tirelessly to accept each other. Poised to incite more internal searching than provide clear statements or easy answers\, North by Current is a visual rumination on the understated relationships between mothers and children\, truths and myths\, losses and gains.

This milestone tour will see The Chills perform music from 1992-2022\, it will also include music from their most recent album Scatterbrain which they’ll be touring in the US for the first time since its release. \nA conceptual classic that embraces styles and genres\, Soft Bomb is an eclectic slow cooked musical stew\, rich and rewarding from the much-loved storytelling songwriter Martin Phillipps. It features contributions from giants of contemporary American music including Van Dyke Parks and ex dB’s Peter Holsapple as collaborators. \nMartin Phillipps (Guitar/Vox) \nJames Dickson (Bass/Backing Vocals) \nTodd Knudson(Drums/Backing Vocals) \nErica Scally (Guitar/Keyboards/Violin/Backing Vocals) \nOli Wilson(Keyboards/Backing Vocals) \n  \nUnwed Sailor \nThe journey of Unwed Sailor began in Seattle\, WA in 1998\, shortly after Johnathon Ford departed critically praised bands Roadside Monument and Pedro the Lion. While working within those projects\, Ford began writing instrumental music after listening to Tortoise\, Pullman\, and seeing bands like Physics perform live. After recruiting Dave Bazan (Pedro the Lion)\, Casey Wescott (Fleet Foxes)\, and Melissa Palladino (Danielson Famile) to play on the now classic Firecracker EP\, Unwed Sailor was born. Two decades and seventeen releases later\, Ford has continued to rely on the band as a device for personal exploration and emotive narration. Unwed Sailor now joins forces with Spartan Records for the release of their latest moody and cinematic journey\, Truth or Consequences\, a sonic examination of particular memories or moments in Johnathon Ford’s life\, with each song serving as a unique snapshot of an overarching narrative. Truth or Consequences is shaped around familiar musical DNA. Heavily present\, driving\, and stacked bass lines; wandering and evolving song structures; soaring crescendos and moody diminuendos; and\, of course\, a gripping sense of sonic storytelling.
