DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents an Opening Reception of two new exhibitions\, “Fugitive Signals” – Corinne Jones\, and “Ongoing: A Personal Retrospective” – Carl Moore. Come celebrate the opening of new works with a musical experience by DJ LadyLove\, a special menu and a complimentary cocktail from Art Bar at Crosstown Arts. The event is free and open to the public. Exhibition will be on view through Sunday\, January 17\, 2027. \nWhen: October 9\, 2026 from 6pm to 8pm\nWhere: Crosstown Arts — 1350 Concourse Avenue\, Ste. 280 Memphis\, Tennessee 38104  Exhibition Run: October 9\, 2026-January 17\, 2027 \nFugitive Signals—Corinne Jones \nFugitive Signals\, a solo exhibition by Corinne Jones\, consists of a new body of paintings made at Crosstown Arts Residency\, and projected photographs of stairs found in Memphis. The ephemeral stairs ground the walls in a pictorial sense while the paintings appear to be shrouded in a balmy atmosphere that signifies the sky. Together\, the stairs and the paintings are connected by the concept of erasure. The stairs are evidence of absence. They lead to plateaus where buildings used to stand. The erasure is absolute\, but the remnant stairs are vestiges of histories hidden in plain sight. They persistently indicate what once was. The paintings are versicolor abstractions patterned together and clouded\, obscured\, etched\, and erased. They depict streaming banners covered in chevron motifs. The banners present a static presence that continuously beckons\, a fixed state of transience. The chevron\, a symbol of strength and protection\, is repeated with both conviction and irreverence. Repetition is the artist’s way of rewriting and over-writing existing conditions that are rooted in patriarchal systems. These interventions become a tool of subversion. The repeated gestures strip the motifs of their original authority and imbues them with new potentials. The collective whole of Fugitive Signals is a proposition to make the invisible visible in the hope of forming new collective memories. \nCorinne Jones b.1972 Memphis\, TN. Jones has lived and worked in New York City since 1991. She earned an MFA from Columbia University in 2007 and a BFA from The School of Visual Arts in 1996. Jones has realized public art projects at Situations Gallery\, New York City\, NY; Elizabeth Street Garden\, New York City\, NY; Madison Park\, Memphis\, TN; and Huling Street\, Memphis\, TN. She has exhibited solo shows at Situations Gallery\, New York City\, NY; Jackie Klempay\, Brooklyn\, NY; Tops Gallery\, Memphis\, TN; The Turchin Center for the Visual Arts\, NC and has participated in various group shows including the Institute of Contemporary Arts\, London\, UK\, Tate Modern; London\, UK; and BWA Wroclaw Galleries of Contemporary Art\, Warsaw\, Poland. Her work is held in many private and public institutions including permanent collections at Museum of Art\, Rhode Island School of Design\, RI; Memphis Brooks Museum of Art\, TN; Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers University\, NJ; Turchin Center for the Visual Arts\, NC; New York Presbyterian Hospital\, NY; and TD Bank\, NY. Jones has published several editions\, Liam Gillick & Corinne Jones\, (Brigade Commerz/Liam Gillick)\, 2010\, Plain English\, 2014\, and Trends in Repurposed Abstraction which debuted at the MoMA PS1 Art Book Fair in 2015. Her artwork has received critical praise from The New Yorker\, Art News\, Art Slant\, Artcore Journal\, Ravelin\, the Brooklyn Rail\, Cultured Magazine and Impulse Magazine. \n  \nOngoing: A Personal Retrospective—Carl Moore \nMy current work is about exploring the day to day social and cultural identity of the black experience and how it relates to our past and present. I want to show those moments that make us who we are as individuals\, and how we not only exist in our personal and communal living spaces but how we exist in the world around us. The physical and emotional impact of our history has left generational scares that we still are healing from\, and those scares have had long lasting effects on how we see the world and how we function within it. I try to create narratives that address social and personal standards that we as a culture have chosen to live by.  Those narratives are about the subtle moments of clarity and peace\, creating a place where we question those standards and react accordingly. \nOngoing: A Personal Retrospective\, is about placing multiple bodies of work together that I’ve created over the last 15 years\, to not only see how the work has changed in technique and conversation\, but also to see how I’ve changed as the artist creating the conversation. I think they both work in tandem\, the artist needs to create the work and the work needs the artist to create it. That’s how the creative process works. The show is about moving from one image to the next\, and creating a continuous conversation between me and the work and deciding how I want to present it to the viewer. It’s a social experiment with color\, shape and form. I’m always trying to make the next painting better than the last.  I’m not saying that there was anything wrong with the previous work\, I just wanted to do something that I didn’t do in the last painting. I think my work has become more complex over the years\, because I am trying to say more. As I get older\, I guess I have more to say. Ongoing: A Personal Retrospective\, is an ongoing conversation between the artist and the viewer\, where no one actually talks to each other\, because the artwork is the conversation. \nCarl E. Moore currently lives and works in Memphis\, Tennessee.  He received his BFA and MFA from the Memphis College of Art. He’s the recipient of the Emmett O’Ryan Award for Artistic Inspiration\, the Tennessee Artist Fellowship award from the Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts\, the Tri-Star Arts Grant sponsored by the Andy Warhol Foundation and attended the Crosstown Arts Residency. He has been featured in several publications such as New American Paintings (southern issues 2021 and 2023)\, Seen magazine UK\, 2023 and numerous other catalogs and news articles. He’s exhibited in various galleries and museums in and around the Memphis area and around the country. He has curated and organized numerous exhibitions in small galleries\, non-profits\, alternative and independent spaces\, as well judged local and national exhibitions. Carl E. Moore has also taught at both the University of Memphis and Rhodes College and has given lectures to numerous galleries\, museums and educational organizations about his work\, art and art history. \n  \nDJ LadyLove is a Memphis-based DJ and music industry creative with a passion for connecting artists\, audiences\, and live experiences. A recent graduate of the University of Memphis with a degree in Music Industry\, she has built her experience across A&R\, artist relations\, live events\, production\, and creative direction. \nHer approach to DJing is rooted in discovery and curation—bringing together R&B\, neo-soul\, hip-hop\, Afrobeats\, and Southern sounds to create an experience that feels intentional\, familiar\, and fresh.
